Please send to [email protected] Page 3 ACKMA Journal No. 99 June 2015 REPORT PRESIDENT’S REPORT Dan Cove will never be forgotten by those of us fortunate enough to be present in Blanche Cave. There was also a great deal of serious Association business, with the new Rules being accepted by the membership and with the formation of the new ACKMA committee. I was honoured to be renominated as President, and to be able to continue to work with the fine group that makes up the Executive. It was a timely and productive exercise to have engaged in the level of debate and discussion throughout the week of the conference regarding the core purposes and challenges faced by the Association. It is firmly my belief that all professional associations should not be afraid of introspection and critical examination, as reluctance to consider a problem leads to stagnation and ultimately decline. Behind the healthy debate there was certainly a clear agreement that ACKMA remains a necessary and relevant body, albeit one that faces challenges of communication, focus and how best to offer advocacy and support. These challenges, and the suggestions made during the conference, will be taken up and worked through by the incoming Executive Committee. Pardiñas² & Gisele Lessa¹ ABSTRACT: We report the easternmost record for the Fornes’ Colilargo, Oligoryzomys fornesi in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil extending more than 500 km to the southeast the geographic range of the species. The studied specimens were found in owl pellets collected in caves. This is the first record of O. fornesi in the municipalities of Lagoa Santa, Sete Lagoas and Cordisburgo, a karst transition zone between the Atlantic Forest and Cerrado biomes. Key-words: Geographic distribution, owl pellets, karst area, Minas Gerais RESUMO: Oligoryzomys fornesi (Massoia, 1973), Mammalia, Rodentia, Sigmodontinae: Extensão da distribuição. Relatamos o registro mais oriental para o rato-do-mato Oligoryzomys fornesi no estado de Minas Gerais, Brasil ampliando a distribuição da espécie em mais de 500 km para o sudoeste. Os espécimes foram amostrados por pelotas de coruja coletadas em cavernas. Este é o primeiro registro de O. fornesi nos municípios de Lagoa Santa, Sete Lagoas e Cordisburgo, uma área cárstica de transição entre a Mata Atlântica e o Cerrado. Com o intuito de reforçar tais temáticas na região do Geoturismo Parque Estadual do Sumidouro/MG (PESU) o presente trabalho Parque Estadual do destina-se a seleção de Locais de Interesse Geomorfológico (LIGeom) Sumidouro para inventariá-los, avaliá-los e classificá-los de modo que possam subsidiar outros estudos na região e valorizar tal patrimônio. A metodologia utilizada foi proposta por Pereira (2006) e adaptada ao carste de Portugal por Forte (2008) e por Travassos (2010) para o carste brasileiro que consiste nas etapas de identificação e caracterização de geossítios com presença de LIGeoms classificados como formas isoladas, tipo área e panorâmicas. Os resultados obtidos permitiram a elaboração de propostas geoconservacionistas como trilhas geoturísticas que buscam a promoção, valorização e divulgação do patrimônio geomorfológico. Out of this total, it is believed that about 29,000 sq km are composed by traditional karst areas developed on carbonates. The most evident problems one can find in karst regions are the inadequate disposal of waste, water contamination and exploitation, especially due to the increasing urbanization in the so called “North Vector” of the State’s capital, Belo Horizonte. This region hosts two State Parks and other Conservation Units created as an attempt to protect the karst landscape. Historically the cities near this region have been used as dormitory towns. Further north, various ranches, country houses for the weekend and rural hostels are set on karst terrains. The municipalities of Vespasiano, Pedro Leopoldo, Confins, Lagoa Santa, Matozinhos, Funilandia and Prudente de Morais are within the 360 sq km Environmental Protected Area of the Lagoa Santa Karst. All these municipalities have been facing demographic growth and consequently generate the anthropogenic pressure over the karst. In order to spread better understanding of the importance of such geoecological systems, a work regarding education through geotourism was carried out in the Sumidouro State Park (Parque Estadual do Sumidouro - PESU).
