ALICE'S RESTAURANT Antoine Howell said he had prepared for the competition with a day and a half of fasting and prayer. He also developed a bagel eating technique with the emphasis on swallowing instead of chewing. For his technique, he was dubbed The Snake' by his manager and promoter who accompained him during the competition. Howell weighs 120 lbs. and is 5'2" tall. He is vice president of his sophomore class at Durham High and works part time at the Bagel Place as a bagel slicer. The faces and places of my Duke experience are already starting to fade in my memory. Rather than devoting a farewell column to recollections, I have tried below to search for a historical perspective on my college years. Because I came to Duke shortly after the Nixon resignation, the most convenient label that comes to mind for this time is the "post-Watergate era." Distrust of politicians, cynicism about government corruption and concern about ethics, however, have not been shaping forces anywhere I've been. Officeholders' caution and media scrutiny have both increased, but this change has turned questions of public trust into mini- dramas, as short-lived and forgetable as TV crime shows. The Bert Lance case would have been no problem for President Carter if he could have seemed to solve it in an hour. Despite the intrigue of Watergate, future historians may look back on this epoch in terms of America's foreign relations. Won't it be a dirty trick on us Nixon-haters if they term it the "generation of peace"? More likely, people in the 21st century will recall the 1970s as a time of rapidly increasing international interdependence. I'm not sure what term the history books will use for this, but I suspect the phrase will be Arabic, and English writers will adopt it HOWEVER, WHILE REMAINING TRULY THANKFUL, I HAVE BEEN ASKED TO DRAW as with the age of the polisor pax Romana YOUR ATTENTION TO THE RIDICULOUS PRICE HEREOF!' ims William Safire into a roaring campaign issue. But such a prospect is unlikely. The probability is that Carter will choose someone to Burns's liking — Gabriel Hauge, now chairman of Manufacturers Hanover, comes to mind — with a track record of fiscal conservatism and personal independence, who would carry on the Burns tradition, especially vital in a time when the banking system is to come under much close scrutiny. The possibility remains, of course, that the President in his press conference was just drawing us off base, setting up a surprise whereby Burns becomes a famous Carter appointee. That would give business confidence a boost and at the same time deliver a kick in the teeth to partisans slavering at the thought of pinning a Carter label on economic bad news. * HE SAID H£ WANTO) ToSAYA LiTOf PRAYER & THE SUCCESS OF OR SAME, Not so far-fetched: Carter knows that 8UT 1 THINK, m GONE TD SLEEP.'' This is an attractive wall calendar with the Sherlock Holmes theme. It contains 13 original drawings of typical scenes from the Sherlock Holmes stories and Victorian London. The calendar itself marks important events from the stories, as well as pertinent English holidays and events. It also serves its practical function with U.S. holidays indicated and large boxes for personal notations. The calendar is spiral-bound and individually shrink-wrapped.
