Doctors said the NICUs at their hospitals have modern equipment and technology. Nodal officer for Covid at Lok Bandhu Hospital Dr Arun Tewari said they already have a sick neona- tal care unit (SNCU) which was used during the pre- vious waves to take care of babies with issues like birth asphyxia, low weight or other problems. “We had this SNCU for the past nine years and the NICU which we have developed at the hospital is an advanced version of that. We upgraded the SNCU as it did not have ventilatory support. Other features which the SNCU had were radiant warm- ers, incubation machines and temperature maintain- ing apparatus,” he said. Dr Tewari said the paediatric field was earlier a part of the medicine stream but later on it evolved as a separate speciality because it was agreed upon that children should be treated as a totally different entity and required special care, special medical attention and a special set up to be looked after because of the difference in body anatomy. “Hence a specialised ICU is required which is different from that for the adults. NICU is also estab- lished separately from PICU and caters to children up to the age of 28 days,” he said. Dr Tewari said that in the NICU, they have got specialised equipment such as radiant warmers, pho- totherapy unit and separate oxygen supply which has to be maintained by a separate equipment. “The equipment and the infrastructure are more specialised in case of NICU as compared to PICU. We had 15 beds for the newborns in the SNCU but the NICU has 20 beds,” he said. Dr Tewari said Covid is not a problem with new- borns since they have less developed ace receptors. “However, the problem is that if a pregnant woman is Covid positive and the baby she delivers is also positive, the latter can develop associated problems such as respiratory distress, pneumonia or any relat- ed issue for which we will have to admit him or her to a separate dedicated unit with all the facilities. When areT we going to achieve herd immunity? Are the decreasing cases in the country despite of many people following COVID inappropriate behav- iour a sign of us moving towards herd immu- nity? Around one year back, everyone was talk- ing about the herd immunity. In fact, among many others, Sweden’s top public health official, Anders Tegnell, predicted his country was clos- ing in on naturally acquired herd immunity. However, all these bold predictions turned out wrong. Last year, serosurveys revealed that a por- tion of the population had developed sufficient antibodies or had already been infected with COVID-19. These were viewed as encouraging indicators by experts and epidemiologists, who labeled them as possible signs of herd immu- nity, which could provide proof as to how we can continue to live with the virus. So, what happened in this one year? The tally of deaths due to COVID in India stands at over four lakh, and there seems no sign of herd immunity. While a few experts believe some places might have already achieved herd immunity, others say it is still a distant dream. Herd immunity, or community immunity, arrives when a large part of the population is immune to a specific disease. This immunity can be earned in two ways either if someone has had COVID or they are vaccinated. Furthermore, it will develop in a person only when he is infected with the virus, but had a low grade infection or if he was asymptomatic. The antibodies start building up after 15 days of a person getting infected and reach its peak at around three months.      “It’s been only a month since the lockdown opened in Delhi.
