TUE Wusrnnnr Fnour AssocrAnoN Inaugurated 11th November 1980. TJNIT ORGAI{ISATION 7gl4 - 1g1g ROYAL HORSEARTILLERY ROYAL FMLDARTILI,ERY ROYAL GARRISON ARTILLERY MILITARY EACT SHEET No.7 By Ronald Clifton February 1996 CHAPTER 1: THE INDIVIDUAL SOLDIER CLOTHING In the field, the standard dress for all ranks was the khaki clothing known as 'service dress'. This consisted of a peaked cap, jacket with patch pockets, and breeches with puttees (leather leggings for officers), ankle boots, and spurs for mounted men. Dismounted men had no spurs and wore trousers instead of breeches. A special Army Order dated 5 August 1914 ordered the wearing of service dress by all ranks for all purposes, with the exception of the Household Cavaby and Foot Guards in London, and from that date Full Dress became virtually obsolete. A spare pair of boots, spare suit of service dress (excluding the cap) and spare set of underwear for each man was stored in his kitbag and left at the base in the care of the company, squadron or battery storeman. For officers these items were packed in a leather valise carried in the transport vehicles with the divisional train. The soldier also had with him a further spare pair of socks and a knitted woollen headdress known as a 'cap, comforter', and a greatcoat. For dismounted men this was normally carried in the pack: for mounted men, rolled behind the saddle. Great emphasis was placed in the importance of clothing, especially boots, being properly fitted. The Clothing Regulations contained detailed instructions for measuring and fitting men with clothing, especially recruits whose clothes were ordered to be fitted with an allowance for future growth.

Geography 497: International Field Study, Summer 2003 Field Trip Summary SUNDAY June 22: 7.00 p.m. Dinner, Halifax Hall, Sheffield University. Final pre-trip preparations are discussed in a local pub, conveniently located within 10 minutes walk. MONDAY, June 23: 7.30 a.m. Breakfast. 9.15 a.m. We begin by walking towards Endcliffe Park and Whiteley Woods where Shepherd Wheel is located. On the way, we pass some Victorian housing and at the junction of Ecclesall Road, Hunter’s Bar, now covered by trees, is the site of a former toll gate (really toll house). Hunter’s Bar was erected around 1700 as part of a turnpike trust to charge road users for the upkeep of the road. There were 10 turnpike trusts controlling 16 toll gates in Sheffield. Hunter’s Bar was the last to close in 1884. Photo 1: Geography 497 in Endcliffe Park. Parks for recreational purposes are a long established, widespread feature of the Sheffield landscape found throughout the city (outside of the central area). Part of the Sheffield web-based promotional literature claims the city is one of the greenest in Europe, including 78 public parks, 10 gardens and 170 woodlands. Many of the parks are large. Photo 2: Shepherd Wheel 9.52 a.m. Shepherd Wheel is on the Porter River, Whiteley Woods. The site comprises cutlery grinding and polishing operations and a water wheel. The latter which provided power for grinding stones (made out of local sandstone) was driven by a dam created by diverting water from the Porter River.

PREFATORY NOTE HE excavations of which this report is a long overdue account, Twere undertaken in three successive seasons in the Long Vaca tions of 1936-7-8 under the auspices of "The Bickerton Camp Scheme." As its name implied, this began in connection with my excavations at Maiden Castle, Bickerton, 1932-35, which had followed the suggestion of Professor C. F. C. Hawkes, M.A., F.B.A., then of the British Museum, that I should embark upon the systematic excavation of the hill-forts of Cheshire, with a view to determining their relationship to the great chain of hill-forts in the Welsh Marches. I began work on Maiden Castle with the voluntary help of a half-dozen of my own students from the Depart ment of Geography in the University of Liverpool, but the experi ence of the first season showed that it was not feasible to attempt worth-while excavations of hill-forts with such a small labour force. The idea occurred to me that I might obtain recruits from the members of the clubs for unemployed being run by the Liverpool Occupational Centres Committee. The idea commended itself to Mr. Harold King, M.A., then Warden of Liverpool University Settlement, and Mr. Marwood, then Secretary of the Occupational Centres Committee, whereupon we formed an executive committee to launch the scheme, thereafter known as the Bickerton Camp Scheme. The essence of it was that volunteers from the clubs of the Occupational Centres Committee gave their labour to me from 8.30 a.m.
