78 rpm INSTRUMENTAL Sets do NOT have original albums unless indicated. If matrix numbers are needed for any of the items below in cases where they have been omitted, just let me know (preferably sooner rather than later). Albums require wider boxes than I use for records. If albums are available and are wanted, they will have to be shipped separately. U.S. postal charges for shipment within the U.S. are still reasonable (book rate) but out of country fees will probably be around $25.00 for an empty album. Capt. H. E. ADKINS dir. • Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme By
RACHMANINOFF’S RHAPSODY ON A THEME BY PAGANINI, OP. 43: ANALYSIS AND DISCOURSE Heejung Kang, B.A., M.M. Dissertation Prepared for the Degree of DOCTOR OF MUSICAL ARTS UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS May 2004 APPROVED: Pamela Mia Paul, Major Professor and Program Coordinator Stephen Slottow, Minor Professor Josef Banowetz, Committee Member Steven Harlos, Interim Chair of Piano Jessie Eschbach, Chair of Keyboard Studies James Scott, Dean of the College of Music Sandra L. Terrill, Interim Dean of the Robert B. Toulouse School of Graduate Studies Kang, Heejung, Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini, Op.43: Analysis and Discourse. Doctor of Musical Arts (Performance), May 2004, 169 pp., 40 examples, 5 figures, bibliography, 39 titles. This dissertation on Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini, Op.43 is divided into four parts: 1) historical background and the state of the sources, 2) analysis, 3) semantic issues related to analysis (discourse), and 4) performance and analysis. The analytical study, which constitutes the main body of this research, demonstrates how Rachmaninoff organically produces the variations in relation to the theme, designs the large-scale tonal and formal organization, and unifies the theme and variations as a whole. The selected analytical approach is linear in orientation - that is, Schenkerian. In the course of the analysis, close attention is paid to motivic detail; the analytical chapter carefully examines how the tonal structure and motivic elements in the theme are transformed, repeated, concealed, and expanded throughout the variations. As documented by a study of the manuscripts, the analysis also facilitates insight into the genesis and structure of the Rhapsody.

  • ARSC Journal
THE MARKETPLACE HOW WELL DID EDISON RECORDS SELL? During the latter part of 1919 Thomas A. Edison, Inc. began to keep cumulative sales figures for those records that were still available. The documents were continued into 1920 and then stopped. While the documents included sales figures for all series of discs time allowed me to copy only those figures for the higher priced classical series. Thus the present article includes the 82,000 ($2.00); 82,500 ($2.50); 83,000 ($3.00) and 84,000 ($4.00) series. Should there be sufficient interest it may be possible to do the other series at a later date. While the document did list some of the special Tone-Test records pressing figures were included for only two of them. I have arbitrarily excluded them and propose to discuss the Edison Tone Tests at a later date. The documents also originally included supplementary listings, which, for the sake of convenience, have been merged into the regular listings. The type copy of the major portion of the listings has been taken from regular Edison numerical catalogs and forms the framework of my forthcoming Complete Edison Disc Numerical Catalog. Several things may be noted: 1) Many of the sales figures seem surprisingly small and many of the records must be classed as rarities; 2) Deletion was not always because of poor sales-mold damage also played a part; 3) Records were retained even with extremely disappointing sales. Without a knowledge of the reason for discontinuance we cannot assume anything concerning records that had already been discontinued.

Molto allegro PROGRAM NOTES BY DR. RICHARD E. RODDA FRANZ SCHUBERT Overture and Ballet Music No. 2 from the Incidental Music to Rosamunde, D. 644 (1820 and 1823) Franz Schubert was born in Vienna on January 31, 1797, and died there on November 19, 1828. He composed the music for Rosamunde during the years 1820 and 1823. The ballet was premiered in Vienna on December 20, 1823 at the Theater-an-der-Wein, with the composer conducting. The Incidental Music to Rosamunde was first performed by the Pittsburgh Symphony on November 9, 1906, conducted by Emil Paur at Carnegie Music Hall. Most recently, Lorin Maazel conducted the Overture to Rosamunde on March 14, 1986. The score calls for pairs of woodwinds, four horns, two trumpets, three trombones, timpani and strings. Performance tine: approximately 17 minutes Schubert wrote more for the stage than is commonly realized. His output contains over a dozen works for the theater, including eight complete operas and operettas. Every one flopped. Still, he doggedly followed each new theatrical opportunity that came his way.

Yohana Ortega Hernández Musicologist Head of the Archives and Library Odilio Urfé National Museum of Music 2 The first institution in Cuba which aimed at compiling, studying and disseminating the Cuban music heritage was the Institute for the Research on Folk Music (IMIF), created in 1949 by Odilio Urfé González together with a group of outstanding musicians. In 1963 the Institute became the Seminar for Popular Music (SMP) and in 1989, the Resource and Information Center on Cuban Music Odilio Urfé. In 2002, this institution merged its collections with the collections of the National Museum of Music (MNM) (officially created on September 9, 1971). The MNM is the most important institution in the country dedicated to the conservation, study and dissemination of the Cuban music heritage. Its collections are housed in the Archives and Library Odilio Urfé. Other institutions that in Cuba treasure documents related to music are the National Library José Martí in Havana, the Elvira Cape Library in Santiago de Cuba, the Center for the Research and Development of Cuban Music (CIDMUC); the Alejandro García Caturla Museum in Remedios and the Museum of Music Rodrigo Prats in Sagua la Grande, both in Villa Clara province; the Resource and Information Center on Music Argeliers León in Pinar del Río; the Center for Information and Documentation on Music Rafael Inciarte in Guantánamo and; the Museum of Music Pablo Hernández Balaguer in Santiago de Cuba.
