The plan outlines two levels of interventions; one that is the preparedness that should take place at the earliest possible and that constitutes an investment in Nepal’s health systems that will in any case benefit the people of Nepal, regardless of the extent of the COVID-19 pandemic in the territory. The second level is the effective response, across sectors, to an estimated caseload of 1500 infected people and 150,000 collaterally affected people. This can then be scaled up in case there is a vast increase in number of infected and affected people, beyond the original scenario of 1500 patients. Nepal is also vulnerable to natural disasters, including seasonal floods and landslides.

    Distribution and availability of raw materials for production of Nepali handmade paper from Daphne species in Darchula district, Nepal D. K. Kharal1, B. N. Oli2 and I. Poudel3 The study, conducted in 2005 in Darchula district of the far western region of Nepal, aimed at assessing the distribution of Lokta plants (Daphne species) and the sustainable availability of their bark as a raw material for Nepali handmade paper. Stratifi ed random sampling design was adopted for collecting primary data from 340 circular shaped sample plots. The study revealed asymmetric distribution and production of Lokta in different Range post areas of Darchula district. While the tree diameter at 30 cm from base (D30) varied from 1 to 18 cm, the maximum tree height varied from 2.1 to 6 m. On the basis of diameter class, about 87 % of the bark weight was found to be of exploitable category. For the entire district of Darchula, the annual yield of Lokta bark for six years rotation amounted only to about two-third of the four years rotation. The study concludes that the stock of Lokta bark that prevails in the district can sustain promotion of Nepali paper production enterprises.     Nepal • FWR/MWR Floods and Landslides Situation Report # 1 8 October 2009 This report was issued by UN OCHA Nepal. It covers the period from October 4 - 8 2009. HIGHLIGHTS • Ten districts in the Mid and Far Western Regions have been affected by the floods and landslides caused by four days of continuous rain; • More than 40 deaths have been recorded, but the impact of landslides has been most felt in Accham (20 deaths) and Dadeldhura (12 deaths) districts, and that of the floods in Kailali and Kanchanpur districts (source: NRCS); • More than 3,000 families and 18,000 individuals have been affected, and at least 1,000 families have been displaced (source: NRCS); • Regional and district level resources can meet current emergency needs and the District Disaster Relief Committees are coordinating efforts in all affected districts; • Damage to roads and telecommunication systems have obstructed search and rescue efforts, especially in hilly and mountainous districts and remote VDCs in Terai districts. • Over the past 24 hours rains have decreased and water levels in many rivers receded. I. Situation Overview At least ten districts in the far- and mid-western regions have been affected by the heavy rains which started in the far-western districts and moved eastward. More than 40 deaths have been reported up to now, including 12 in Dadeldhura district, and 20 in Accham district (source: NRCS). The amount of rainfall was especially high in Doti and Dadeldhura districts, where it reached 245.7 mm and 227.4 mm respectively in a 24-hour period (Meteorological Forecasting Division website).

Yadav Institute of Agriculture and Animal Science, Rampur, Chitwan, Nepal Accepted 17 May, 2013 Transformation of traditional and subsistence agriculture into commercial and market oriented production system needs efficient transfer of technology to the farmers. Efforts to bridge the gap between research and farmer’s field have been lacking in Nepal and performance of the organizations providing extension services to the farmers is below par, the reason behind this state of affairs is still to be studied. In order to assess the performance of development organizations, this study selected 105 farmers from Dadeldhura district using stratified random sampling technique and both primary and secondary data regarding the activities of those organizations were collected. The development organizations were found to be concentrated in urban areas with technician to population ratio and extension coverage of 1:2353 and 22.7%, respectively. Agriculture sector occupied only 4.01% of the district budget. Most of the organizations had similar type of activities mainly related to technology, extension and support. Regression analysis showed that organizations had significant contribution in annual income of farmers, hence it played a significant role in development of agriculture in the district and respondents were satisfied by their works in general with few disappointments at some instants.
