Negro Anthology. 4to, illustrations, fold-out map, original brown linen over beveled boards, lettered and stamped in red, top edge stained brown. London: Published by Nancy Cunard at Wishart & Co, 1934. First edition, first issue binding, of this landmark anthology. Nancy Cunard, an independently wealthy English heiress, edited Negro Anthology with her African-American lover, Henry Crowder, to whom she dedicated the anthology, and published it at her own expense in an edition of 1000 copies. Cunard’s seminal compendium of prose, poetry, and musical scores chiefly reflecting the black experience in the United States was a socially and politically radical expression of Cunard’s passionate activism, her devotion to civil rights and her vehement anti-fascism, which, not surprisingly given the times in which she lived, contributed to a communist bias that troubles some critics of Cunard and her anthology. Cunard’s account of the trial of the Scottsboro Boys, published in 1932, provoked racist hate mail, some of which she published in the anthology. Among the 150 writers who contributed approximately 250 articles are W. E. B. Du Bois, Arna Bontemps, Sterling Brown, Countee Cullen, Alain Locke, Arthur Schomburg, Samuel Beckett, who translated a number of essays by French writers; Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, William Carlos Williams, Louis Zukofsky, George Antheil, Ezra Pound, Theodore Dreiser, among many others. -

BEFORE COLUMBUS FOUNDATION PRESENTS THE AMERICAN BOOK AWARDS 2004 America was intended to be a place where freedom from discrimination was the means by which equality was achieved. Today, American culture THE is the most diverse ever on the face of this earth. Recognizing literary excel- lence demands a panoramic perspective. A narrow view strictly to the mainstream ignores all the tributaries that feed it. American literature is AMERICAN not one tradition but all traditions. From those who have been here for thousands of years to the most recent immigrants, we are all contributing to American culture. We are all being translated into a new language. BOOK Everyone should know by now that Columbus did not “discover” America. Rather, we are all still discovering America—and we must continue to do AWARDS so. The Before Columbus Foundation was founded in 1976 as a nonprofit educational and service organization dedicated to the promotion and dissemination of contemporary American multicultural literature. The goals of BCF are to provide recognition and a wider audience for the wealth of cultural and ethnic diversity that constitutes American writing. BCF has always employed the term “multicultural” not as a description of an aspect of American literature, but as a definition of all American litera- ture. BCF believes that the ingredients of America’s so-called “melting pot” are not only distinct, but integral to the unique constitution of American Culture—the whole comprises the parts. In 1978, the Board of Directors of BCF (authors, editors, and publishers representing the multicultural diversity of American Literature) decided that one of its programs should be a book award that would, for the first time, respect and honor excellence in American literature without restric- tion or bias with regard to race, sex, creed, cultural origin, size of press or ad budget, or even genre. -

The addition processed in 1991 contains manuscript and typescript materials related to the Four Seasons Foundation publication of Interviews (1980) by Edward Dorn and The Graces (1983) by Aaron Shurin; and the Grey Fox Press publication of Enough Said (1980) by Philip Whalen and I Remain (1980), a collection of Lew Welch's letters. The addition processed in 2011 enhances the earlier accessions with additional press files, correspondence, as well as Allen's personal subject files. -

The Little Magazine in America, mid-1950s to mid-1980s: A Collection from the Golden Age of the Small Press Mimeo Revolution We are pleased to offer for sale an extraordinary collection of little magazines from the golden age of the small press mimeo revolution. The collection documents, with great breadth and depth, the intellectual, spiritual, and material diversity of poet-driven publishing in the US and, to a lesser extent, Canada and the UK from the mid-1950s to the mid-1980s. Keith and Rosmarie Waldrop review page proofs at Burning Deck Press (Providence Journal, 1980s). The present collection has emerged in tandem with our ongoing projects to chronicle and archive the proliferation of avant-garde underground small press publications, including the acclaimed New York Public Library exhibition and book A Secret Location on the Lower East Side, curated and written by Steve Clay and Rodney Phillips, as well as our new expanded resource website, From a Secret Location, launched in January 2017 by Granary Books. The collection includes a strong representation of seminal works from various movements and groupings such as the New York School, British Poetry Revival, Beats, Black Mountain, San Francisco Renaissance, Ethnopoetics, Black Arts, Venice West, Meat poets, Wichita Vortex, and Language poets. Concrete and visual poetry is also well represented. One of the chief strengths of the collection is its range of inclusivity, which reveals an international network of poet-driven and -distributed publications that developed into a vast underground economy, from Vancouver to Cardiff and Bolinas to Buffalo, with hundreds of stops in between. -

My thesis contextualizes his life and his work in relation to his hometown, Boston, reclaiming his rightful place in several seminal poetry movements of post-World War II America, such as Black Mountain College, the Beats, and the San Francisco Renaissance, and the Boston Occult School of poets. My analysis situates his later work properly in relation to select earlier poems, and in relation to his life struggles with mental illness, poverty and drug addiction, addressing the seismic shift in his work that occurred in his politically charged last book of poems, Behind the State Capitol. -

Welcome to The Thought Project, recorded at The Graduate Center of the City University of New York, fostering groundbreaking research and scholarship in the arts, social sciences, and sciences. In this space, we talk with faculty and doctoral students about the big thinking and big ideas generating cutting edge research, informing New Yorkers and the world. Ammiel Alcalay is a poet, translator, critic, scholar, and activist who teaches at Queens College and The Graduate Center, CUNY. His books include Scrapmetal, Factory School, 2006; from the warring factions, Beyond Baroque, 2002; and a notable translation of Sarajevo Blues. Among his most notable contributions with Anne Waldman and others as an initiator of Poetry Is News Coalition, and he organized with Mike Kelleher, the OlsonNow project. Most recently, through the PhD Program in English and the Center for the Humanities at The Graduate Center, he launched Lost & Found: The CUNY Poetics Document Initiative, a series of student and guest edited archival texts emerging from the New American Poetry.
