DOI: https://doi.org/10.24197/ersjes.38.2017.155-160 Fortunately, someone neglected to remind editors Ángel Chaparro Sainz and Amaia Ibarraran Bigalondo that albums or CDs are anachronisms in this day of instant digital downloads and personal song mixes cherry- picked from the vast on-line music archive. Taking as their model Led Zeppelin’s 2003 triple live album, How the West Was Won, recorded during a 1972 concert tour through the United States, they organized this eclectic essay collection into three ‘singles’—“Spac(in’) the West”; “Travel(in’) the West”; and “Perform(in’) the West”—each one comprised of five essays plus a “bonus track.” The collection begins with an ‘overture’ that includes a lyric epigraph entitled “The Water Wars” by Willy Vlautin of the Portland, Oregon band Richmond Fontaine; “Ode to the Mohave,” an evocative creative non-fiction piece on Lake Mead by Phyllis Barber; and a very personable introduction by the editors, “How the West Won Us.” Being from Utah, “Where the Streets Have No Name,” I prefer U2’s best-selling 1987 album, The Joshua Tree, or perhaps Bruce Springsteen’s brilliant 2005 album, Devils and Dust, as models for rocking Western discourse, but must admit that Led Zeppelin works fine here. Vlautin and Barber first lay down a dry thematic riff with texts that focus on the most precious Western resource, water, and the increasing lack thereof, with individual and regional survival in the balance. -

It offers reflection and re collection, it is an antidote against lost certitudes."1 Like perhaps no other medium, the music video clip is marking and shap ing our everyday culture: film, art, literature, advertisements they all are clearly under the impact of the music video in their aesthetics, their technical procedures, visual worlds or narrative strategies. The reason for this has not only to be sought in the fact that some of the video di rectors are now venturing into art or advertisement, but that also peo ple not working in the field of producing video clips are indebted to this medium.2 Thus, more or less former video clipdirectors such as Chris Cunningham or Jonas Akerlund have established themselves successfully with their creations which very often are based on ideas and concepts, originally developed for earlier music videos: both Cunningham's works Flex and Monkey Drummer, commissioned in 2000 respectively 2001 by the Anthony d'Offay Gallery, evolved out of his earlier music videos.' Flex relies on the fantastic and weightless underwater cosmos Cunningham designed for the images that accompanied Portishead's Only you in 1998. Monkey Drummer* is heavily based on the soundtrack written by the Irish musician Aphex Twin (Richard David James) for whom Cunningham had previously directed famous videos such as Come to Daddy (1997) and Win- dowlicker (1999). -

London: Published by Nancy Cunard at Wishart & Co, 1934. First edition, first issue binding, of this landmark anthology. Nancy Cunard, an independently wealthy English heiress, edited Negro Anthology with her African-American lover, Henry Crowder, to whom she dedicated the anthology, and published it at her own expense in an edition of 1000 copies. Cunard’s seminal compendium of prose, poetry, and musical scores chiefly reflecting the black experience in the United States was a socially and politically radical expression of Cunard’s passionate activism, her devotion to civil rights and her vehement anti-fascism, which, not surprisingly given the times in which she lived, contributed to a communist bias that troubles some critics of Cunard and her anthology. Cunard’s account of the trial of the Scottsboro Boys, published in 1932, provoked racist hate mail, some of which she published in the anthology. Among the 150 writers who contributed approximately 250 articles are W. E. B. Du Bois, Arna Bontemps, Sterling Brown, Countee Cullen, Alain Locke, Arthur Schomburg, Samuel Beckett, who translated a number of essays by French writers; Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, William Carlos Williams, Louis Zukofsky, George Antheil, Ezra Pound, Theodore Dreiser, among many others. -

From those who have been here for thousands of years to the most recent immigrants, we are all contributing to American culture. We are all being translated into a new language. BOOK Everyone should know by now that Columbus did not “discover” America. Rather, we are all still discovering America—and we must continue to do AWARDS so. The Before Columbus Foundation was founded in 1976 as a nonprofit educational and service organization dedicated to the promotion and dissemination of contemporary American multicultural literature. The goals of BCF are to provide recognition and a wider audience for the wealth of cultural and ethnic diversity that constitutes American writing. BCF has always employed the term “multicultural” not as a description of an aspect of American literature, but as a definition of all American litera- ture. BCF believes that the ingredients of America’s so-called “melting pot” are not only distinct, but integral to the unique constitution of American Culture—the whole comprises the parts. It does this through engaging its artistic expression within a branch of Country Music known as Americana and, more specifically, through the American West articulated in the songs of musician and author Willy Vlautin, expressed by his bands Richmond Fontaine and the Delines. -
