Downloaded by [University of Wisconsin - Madison] at 05:00 18 January 2017 THE ARCHAEOLOGY OF THE PRUSSIAN CRUSADE The Archaeology of the Prussian Crusade explores the archaeology and material culture of the Crusade against the Prussian tribes in the thirteenth century, and the subsequent society created by the Teutonic Order that lasted into the six- teenth century. It provides the first synthesis of the material culture of a unique crusading society created in the south-eastern Baltic region over the course of the thirteenth century. It encompasses the full range of archaeological data, from standing buildings through to artefacts and ecofacts, integrated with writ- ten and artistic sources. The work is sub-divided into broadly chronological themes, beginning with a historical outline, exploring the settlements, castles, towns and landscapes of the Teutonic Order’s theocratic state and concluding with the role of the reconstructed and ruined monuments of medieval Prussia in the modern world in the context of modern Polish culture. This is the first work on the archaeology of medieval Prussia in any lan- guage, and is intended as a comprehensive introduction to a period and area of growing interest. This book represents an important contribution to promot- ing international awareness of the cultural heritage of the Baltic region, which has been rapidly increasing over the last few decades. Singing tradition of the Klaipėda region preserved in Lithuania and in the émigré communities In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries it was the Lithuanian songs of East Prussia that opened the way for Lithuanian language and culture into Western Europe. The elegiac folk poetry, with characteristically straightforward structure and plain subject matter, fascinated the enlightened minds of artists and scholars, kindling their imagination and providing inspiration for their own creative work. Certain ideas that originated in the Age of Enlightenment and gained currency in Western Europe, coupled with the nascent concern about the newly discovered yet already vanishing layer of traditional culture, lent an important impetus for preservation of that obsolescent culture. It was then that the Lithuanian songs were first recorded, published and researched. The network of Prussian clergymen who were the first collectors of folklore formed around Liudvikas Rėza (Ludwig Rhesa) (1776‒1840), a professor at the University of Königsberg, amassed a priceless repository of Lithuanian non-material culture, which kept growing by the effort of countless devout enthusiasts during the coming two hundred years. The present collection of Songs and Music from the Klaipėda Region is yet another contribution to this ever expanding repository. At long last we will have an opportunity to hear the real sound of what many of us have only known in the form of written down verses, notated melodies, and interpretations thereof. As a matter of fact, no sound recordings of authentic Prussian Lithuanian songs or instrumental music have been published in Lithuania in the course of the 20th century. On the other hand, there was no apparent lack of valuable materials preserved at folklore archives and informants who could have sung Lithuanian folk songs for the compilers of sound anthologies in the middle of 26 the 20th century.

The article presents new data on sedimentological structures, which have been discovered at the Ryadino archaeo- logical excavation in the northeast of the Kaliningrad District of Russia (the Šešupė River Valley). Tongue-shaped and dome- shaped diapir-like structures indicate liquefaction-induced features. As the most plausible reason, the earthquake-induced shaking is discussed. A preliminary estimation of the time interval for the seismic event covers the period from the early up to the late Holocene. The reasons for seismic activity in this region can be related to neotectonic movements (including glacio-isostatic rebound) as recorded in the southeastern Baltic Sea area of the Fennoscandian ice sheet margin zone. The relation between a palaeoseismic event and the essential changes in the hydrographic network in the region is also discussed. Key words: palaeoseismicity, liquefaction, soft-sediment deformation structures, glacio-isostatic rebound, Šešupė River valley. INTRODUCTION According to Stewart et al.

INTRODUCTION When we hear the term Ostpreussen, for us it is associated foremost with German cul- ture and the role that this Prussian land had in it. The emergence and disappearance of East Prussia is associated with two acts of force. The term was introduced at the end of the 18th century, following the infamous first partition of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth; while the reason for East Prussia vanishing was the Second World War and the geopolitical remaking of East-Central Europe devised by the winners of the war. In the German-speaking world, however, Ostpreussen was for a long time associ- ated with anything but images of violence. In the mid-19th century, East Prussians, for instance, felt they lived in the ‘Siberia of Germany’.1 Another image of East Prussia, the 6 area from which the growth of the Prussian state began, was reinforced afterwards. Subsequently, East Prussia was transformed into a stronghold of German culture in the East, with the principal realms of memory representing this culture being Kant, Copernicus, Herder, Dach, Königsberg and Marienburg. In addition, East Prussia repre- sented to Germans a wonderful corner of natural beauty, with shady woods, the lakes of Masuria, and the Curonian Spit. Ultimately, in the period after the Second World War, the very concept of Ostpreussen as such evolved into a realm of memory, which, above all, was associated with the lost land and two other concepts, Flucht and Vertreibung. East Prussia, however, is not merely a realm of memory for the Germans. In their project ‘Polish-German Realms of Memory’, the Centre for Historical Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Berlin also portrayed East Prussia as a common Ger- man and Polish realm of memory.

Master’s thesis, 119 p., 1 appendix page Baltic Sea Region Studies August 2014 This thesis deals with sense of place, the relation that we construct with our dwelling and the surrounding environment. The topic belongs to the field of human geography. Sense of place is deeply intertwined with the ideas of feeling at home and having a place where to return. I argue that narratives of life experience help us relate to the places we inhabit, go through, leave. My analysis concerns Lithuania Minor, the Lithuanian region lying by the border with Kaliningrad, and focuses in particular on Vilkyškiai, a village in the municipality of Pagėgiai. Most of the area’s original population disappeared in the war. After 1945, people from all over the country and the USSR settled here. This raised the prickly question of who belongs to the borderland. Refugees, migrants and settlers allow us to observe closely the development of sense of place and its main constituents. Through this analysis, I challenge the idea of people’s natural rights to places and shows how time, engagement in local-based cultural activities and recollection help foreigners become locals.

Usually they have their own names and are shrouded in place-legends and be- liefs.
