Students on Ice ARCTIC EXPEDITION 2013 | JULY 14-28 “The Students on Ice Arctic Youth Expedition 2013 offers a once in a lifetime opportunity for youth, from both the north and south, to become engaged in the discussion and decisions about the future of the Arctic. What better place to do it than on a journey through the Arctic? Will we continue to react to events as they unfold, or will we be leaders in the race to chart the region’s economic, environmental and cultural future?” Ed Struzik Award-winning Arctic journalist Author of The Big Thaw: Travels in the Melting North THE EXPEDITION 2009 recipient of the Michener Deacon Fellowship The 13th annual Students on Ice Arctic expedition will be a profound hands-on experience for youth to expand their knowledge of the changing circumpolar world, foster a new understanding and respect for the planet, and gain the inspiration and motivation needed to help lead us to a healthy and sustainable future. Eighty high-school youth from around the world will participate on this educational journey of a lifetime, together with a diverse team of twenty top CEO’s and leaders, and thirty elders, educators, experts, scientists, artists, musicians, dignitaries, journalists, authors and innovators. The journey will be an extraordinary platform for the ‘leaders of today’ to learn, share and pass the torch to the ‘leaders of tomorrow’. Our ship-based Arctic expedition begins this year in Canada’s capital city Ottawa. From there we fly to Kangerlussuaq, Greenland to board our expedition vessel and set sail to explore the communities, coasts, fiords, bays and islands of western Greenland, Davis Strait, Baffin Island, and Lancaster Sound. The final leg of our journey is sailing into the Northwest Passage! Each day will be filled with exploration, discovery, presentations, workshops, hands-on research, hikes, fun, and lots of adventure! Activities will include wildlife encounters, visits to remote Arctic communities, as well as the opportunity to acquire first-hand knowledge and insight into the dynamics of climate change, traditional knowledge, scientific research, and other diverse Arctic and Global issues. Our team’s experiences and messages will be shared widely around the world via traditional and social media and post-expedition outreach and new initiatives. I found out more about myself in the moments where my hand was outreached to feel the crystals of a ten thousand year old iceberg or as my feet were shocked from the run-off of a glacier with ten kilometers still ahead of me, or as my eyes were fixated with those of a Polar Bear. It was then that I found my capacity for things on a global stage, and that magic and possibility still exist in a world which seems to get smaller with every click of a mouse.” Donovan Taplin Student, Arctic Expedition 2010 “Education is one of the key factors that influence how we live our lives. What Students on Ice offers is a wonderful program that introduces you to the many vital issues facing northern countries and allows you hands-on experiences that truly bring to life the beauty of the north.” His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston C.C., C.M.M., C.O.M., C.D.
