sustainability Article Life Satisfaction of Downtown High-Rise vs. Suburban Low-Rise Living: A Chicago Case Study Peng Du 1,*, Antony Wood 1, Nicole Ditchman 2 and Brent Stephens 3 1 College of Architecture, Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, IL 60616, USA; [email protected] 2 Department of Psychology, Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, IL 60616, USA; [email protected] 3 Department of Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering, Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, IL 60616, USA; [email protected] * Correspondence: [email protected]; Tel.: +1-312-283-5646 Received: 14 April 2017; Accepted: 14 June 2017; Published: 17 June 2017 Abstract: There has been a long-standing debate about whether urban living is more or less sustainable than suburban living, and quality of life (QoL) is one of several key measures of the social sustainability of residential living. However, to our knowledge, no study to date has examined life satisfaction among residents of downtown high-rise living compared to residents living in suburban low-rise housing. Further, very few studies have utilized building or neighborhood-scale data sets to evaluate residents’ life satisfaction, and even fewer have controlled for both individual and household-level variables such as gender, age, household size, annual income, and length of residence, to evaluate residents’ life satisfaction across different living scenarios. Therefore, the goal of this study was to investigate residents’ satisfaction with their place of residence as well as overall life in general via surveys of individuals living in existing high-rise residential buildings in downtown Chicago, IL, and in existing low-rise residential buildings in suburban Oak Park, IL.

  • Welcome to the South Shore Line (SSL) Commuter Rail Service Serving Northwest Indiana and Northeast Illinois
! Welcome to the South Shore Line (SSL) commuter rail service serving Northwest Indiana and Northeast Illinois. The SSL serves a total of 19 stations, of which 13 are wheelchair-accessible. On weekdays the SSL runs 43 trains, and on weekends and holidays it runs 20 trains. South Bend Airport The South Bend Airport is the easternmost station along the South Shore Line. The boarding platform is a high-level platform allowing for wheelchair accessibility. There is a ticket agent at this station with limited availability (Fridays 6:05 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. and weekends 6:05 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.). Ticket vending machines are available to the north of the ticket agent windows. Paid parking is available through the South Bend Airport. South Bend Transpo bus service provides additional stops at the South Bend Airport at the opposite end of the terminal from the South Shore Line station for those needing connecting service. Click here for Transpo routes and fares. Additional bus/taxi services can be found by clicking here. Hudson Lake The Hudson Lake Station is a low-level boarding station and is therefore not wheelchair- accessible. This is a flag stop station so a button must be pressed (5 minutes before departure time) to activate the strobe light that would indicate to trains to stop for passenger pickup. Passengers who wish to depart the train at this station should notify their conductor at the time they are collecting tickets. There are no ticket vending machines available to purchase tickets at this station so tickets must be purchased on the app or with cash from a conductor.

Directions to the CDR Chicago Research Lab (CRL) The CRL is located in the Clark Adams Building 210 South Clark Street (Clark and Adams), Suite 1510 (entrance to building is across the street from the Post Office) All visitors to the Clark Adams building, including all RAs and participants, must sign-in and present a photo ID at the security desk in the lobby of the building upon entering and exiting. If you will regularly visit or work at the CRL, notify Becky in order for her to arrange to get you a security pass for the building, as well as for the CRL. The Clark Adams is easily reached by many forms of public transportation. There is very limited metered street parking available in front of the building ($6.50/hour), as well as nearby pay parking lots (about $30+/day). Taking public transportation will be the most cost-effective option for travel to the Clark Adams, from Hyde Park as well as the rest of the city. A transportation map appears at the end of this document. Visit the following link for a complete series of CTA and METRA system maps: http://www.transitchicago.com/maps/. Google transit is another good resource for reviewing transit options between locations: http://www.google.com/transit. Travel by METRA train Web site: www.metrarail.com Metra's Electric line, which runs through Hyde Park, is a convenient option for reaching the CRL from Hyde Park. The closest stop to the CRL is at the Van Buren Station (at Van Buren and Michigan).
