Annual Report 2008-2009 Gram SevaTrust Preface – A journey of 15 years Gram Seva Trust has completed fifteen years in the service of the poor in the Gandevi Taluka of Navsari district of South Gujarat. We feel extremely happy and proud to share highlights of activities of past 15 years along with annual report of 2008-09 with our esteemed donors, well wishers and friends who have been our co-travelers in this journey making substantial contributions all along. GST took birth in 1994 with an aim to serve the poor and outcasts amongst the landless tribal communities in and around Kharel. It has since completed 15 years from that infant step. First 15 years represent childhood in the life of an individual when he or she is preparing to finish the school but for an organization, fifteen years show its journey towards stability in the field and a proof of its commitment towards the stated mission and goals. It is a long time, therefore, to introspect while celebrating this milestone. It is time to take an account of our shortcomings and incomplete missions and chart the future di- rections. Some projects like quality health care delivery, nutrition project to meet the chal- lenge of severe malnutrition amongst the children and building partnerships with various schemes in public health domain of state and central government have given us immense satisfaction. We have taken great inspiration from the Gandhian thought where the village development is central to national progress and prosperity. A comprehensive approach is, therefore, necessary for alleviating poverty, promoting value based education and empow- ering the community ridden with caste prejudices.

17th ANNUAL REPORT 2010-11 Dr.Roda Patel- An Unexpected Departure All our well wishers, friends, donors have known our Trustee Dr.Roda Khushroo Patel and her passion to work for the under privileged children. Dr.Roda Patel worked as a paediatrician in Chicago for many years but her heart was in India. She longed to do something for the poor and needy children in India. With this mission she came to Kharel in 1995 and after that visited Kharel for 4 months every year. She was a major force behind the Child Health and Nutrition Project started by the organization, to improve the malnutrition and health in the poor tribal children. She was very concerned about the malnutrition in these children Dr. Roda Patel and worked day and night to collect donations from friends, well wishers, philanthrophic organizations in India and abroad. She started the Gram Seva Foundation in U.S.A. for this purpose and all donations to this foundation are utilised for the children's welfare project in Kharel. The Foundation continues to give money for this purpose. Dr.Roda Patel was the inspiration behind the Balawas Project. This project provides residential facilities and education to children, whose parents are migrants, who are orphans or come from broken families. The project was very close to her heart and she wanted to expand it so that more and more children benefit. It is for this reason that it is necessary to examine the conditions under which the translation has been made. Who translates, what is translated and for whom and how is the translation produced. As in the words of Paul St-Pierre: “...an original text and its translation are dynamically connected to each other, precisely through the criteria governing their relations, rather than in a static, predetermined relation of equivalence. Translation makes visible the existence of such criteria and, in so doing, contributes to an awareness of the elements founding the translating culture, conditioning in the way in which the culture defines itself in terms of - and very often in denial of- another the other.” - Paul St-Pierre Many famous writers, who wrote in the regional languages, shaped the phenomenon of an era by their contribution in the field of regional literature This region is less travelled especially regarding the translations that are made in the regional languages. As in the words of Dr.Sunil Sagar: “We have yet to dwell upon the way culturally central texts were translated and the history around it.

  • Gram Seva Trust : Annual Report 2009-10
GRAM SEVA TRUST - Annual Report 2009-2010 Preface Gram Seva Trust has been dedicated to providing health care and development in and around rural area of Kharel in South Gujarat since its inception in 1994. Although the entry point was to provide quality health care at an affordable cost to the rural poor of the area, it was imperative to get involved with other concerns of the community well-being like malnutrition, plight of women and children, poverty and illiteracy. The inter-linkages between poverty and disease, between illiteracy and backwardness are well known and can not be ignored. It is meaningless to talk of good health care without ameliorating the adverse conditions that these people live with. While tackling malnutrition amongst pre-school children was our major initial project in the community, subsequent years saw other projects targeted towards community development focusing on mother and child health, women’s economic activities, adolescent girls and boys’ health, de-addictions and education. Projects like SNGO, Child Nutrition etc. have given us the opportunity to co-ordinate and work with the Government setup. They have also helped in developing co-ordination and understanding not only between the hospital care and the community but also between the two arms of staff, those working in the hospital and those working actively in the field. Women have emerged in the forefront of all community related projects; be it income generating schemes, health education or formal school education. GST has encouraged women in taking a leadership role. Toilet project this year was on demand by the women from Self Help Groups and has been a new learning experience for us.
