Film sebagai media komunikasi massa dapat menjadi alat komunikasi yang sejatinya bersifat efektif. Sebagai representasi dari realitas yang ada, film terbentuk berdasarkan kode, konvensi, dan ideologi dari kebudayaan. Pada penelitian ini, peneliti memilih film sebagai objek penelitian. Penelitian ini dilakukan pada film Bajrangi Bhaijaan dengan fokus penelitian untuk mengetahui makna pesan toleransi beragama dalam film Bajrangi Bhaijaan. Pemilihan film tersebut sebagai penelitian bukan tanpa alasan, yaitu karena diantara banyak film bertemakan toleransi yang ada, film Bajrangi Bhaijaan lebih dikenal secara internasional dan memiliki rating yang tinggi. Metode penelitian yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif. Kualitatif merupakan prosedur penelitian yang menghasilkan data deskriptif berupa kata-kata tertulis maupun lisan dari orang- orang dan prilaku yang diamati. Penelitian ini berpedoman pada pendekatan kualitatif, dengan menggunakan analisis semiotika model Charles Sanders Peirce. Peirce mengkategorikan tanda dengan teori segitiga makna yang terdiri dari tiga elemen utama yakni, representament/sign, object, dan interpretant. Peneliti melakukan analisis terhadap pemilihan adegan dan dialog yang berhubungan dengan nilai toleransi antar umat beragama.
