Brydon-Miller Abstract This case study investigated what constitutes survival skills and a supportive living environment from the perspective of the Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) Transitional Living Program participants and YWCA support staff. Research questions that guided this investigation are the following: (1) What survival skills do you need to live independent (self-sufficient, free) from an abusive relationship? And (2) what does a supportive (encouraging, caring, helpful, accommodating) living environment mean to you in a transitional living environment? Such questions help gather insight for improving intervention programs for abused women; although great improvements have been made in terms of legislation, policy, and federal funding, such advances have not been enough to improve the situations of abused women.

Vanzant, Iyanla is most famous today for her show called Iyanla: Fix My Life that airs on the Oprah Winfrey Network on Saturday’s and takes place in rental homes throughout the client’s community. In this show, Iyanla is a life coach for all individuals including celebrities, which as well take place in rental homes. Iyanla does this by making sure she is doing her job as a counselor and giving advice to her clients through her prior knowledge. This paper will go over a rhetorical analysis of how Iyanla provides counseling services as a rhetorical action and how rhetorical strategies play a role during counseling services. Iyanla builds her credibility by going over her personal/business characteristics stated above, in her opening credits, using her own knowledge of prior history, continuously engaging emotional appeals, and using terms with examples for logical appeals. Towards the end of episode 505, Iyanla gives feedback on whether her services were effective for the couple and if they continued to use her strategies. Next, I will be describing the episode I will be analyzing. Description of Artifact Episode 505 season 5 of Iyanla Fix My Life is titled “Basketball Lies: Brandi and Jason Maxiell”; this episode is about a former NBA star and his reality star wife.

She has a hand in almost every form of media: movies, television, books, Internet, and radio. In her rise to success, another place that she has infiltrated is the church. Because of her wide range of influence, her thoughts and teaching on spirituality have made their way into both the home and church. Over ten years ago, talk shows had a reputation for portraying mainly negative topics. To combat this stereotype, she made a push to encourage more positive topics of discussion on her show. Yet after receiving criticism for “preaching,” she withdrew from spiritually natured shows. However, in the last couple of years, her shows have again seen more focus on spirituality. While Winfrey has been both praised and criticized for these spiritual views, there has not been much written about what these views actually are. There has also been virtually no study to compare her views of ten years ago to the more recent views. Therefore, this thesis uses Erving Goffman’s framing analysis to extract the frames she presents on spirituality on her talk show, The Oprah Winfrey Show.

With a unique brand of entertainment that was part therapeutic, part spiritual Winfrey used her television platform to reach the hearts and minds of the American public. Winfrey gracefully transcended race unlike any black celebrity before or since her. At its peak, The Oprah Winfrey Show (ABC), which won 47 Daytime Emmy Awards, averaged 42 million viewers a week. Millions of white women adopted Winfrey as the African-American sister or best friend that they never had. For African-American women (and men), Winfrey was the ultimate embodiment of racial uplift. Winfrey rose from poverty in Mississippi to become the first black female billionaire in North America. Although critics have accused her of pandering to white viewers, she never lost support within the African-American community. The National Museum of African-American History and Culture (NMAAHC) opened the “Watching Oprah” exhibition in June 2018. “Just as Oprah Winfrey watched TV coverage of the Civil Rights Movement and was shaped by the era in which she was born and raised, she has gone on to have a profound impact on how Americans viewed themselves and each other in the tumultuous decades that followed,” says the museum’s founding director, Lonnie Bunch.     RESOLUTION Honoring Iyanla Vanzant’s Life, Accomplishments and Contributions to the Fields of Spirituality and Personal Development. WHEREAS, Iyanla Vanzant has had a 30 year-long distinguished career in which she continues to be honored for her writing, public speaking, life coaching, and spiritual teachings. Throughout her career, she has published 18 books, six of which are New York Times best sellers, and has played a leading role in two television shows, multiple speaking tours, and countless radio and television features. Her formal titles as life coach, ordained priestess, spiritual healer, and attor- ney are not what defines her: she is also a devoted mother, a grandmother, a prayer warrior, and student of life; and WHEREAS, Iyanla Vanzant’s life is a “living testament to the value in life's valleys.” Vanzant has had to overcome much adversity on her journey to success. She was born in the Brooklyn projects, and her mother died when she was just two years old. Throughout her childhood and young adulthood, she suffered from physical and sexual abuse. Iyanla was once a single mother relying on public assistance to help with the cost of raising her family. From this troubled his- tory, she gives God the credit for being able to overcome. Her journey through the valley has only strengthened her relationship with God, and has given her the motivation to dedicate her ca- reer to the spiritual uplifting of women of color; and WHEREAS, Against all odds, Vanzant has received three degrees of higher education, in which she has graduated with distinguished honors.
