D.) in the Urban Educational Leadership Program of the College of Education, Criminal Justice and Human Services 2007 by Joyce Ann McCoy B.S. University of Cincinnati, 1981 M.A. University of Cincinnati, 1986 Committee Chair: Dr. Mary L. Brydon-Miller Abstract This case study investigated what constitutes survival skills and a supportive living environment from the perspective of the Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) Transitional Living Program participants and YWCA support staff. Research questions that guided this investigation are the following: (1) What survival skills do you need to live independent (self-sufficient, free) from an abusive relationship? And (2) what does a supportive (encouraging, caring, helpful, accommodating) living environment mean to you in a transitional living environment? Such questions help gather insight for improving intervention programs for abused women; although great improvements have been made in terms of legislation, policy, and federal funding, such advances have not been enough to improve the situations of abused women.

Video duration – 12:33 A CBC News investigation discovered that there were nearly 1,800 hate crimes reported to Canadian police last year. But that number likely doesn’t tell the whole story. Inaccurate reporting and different classifications make a true calculation nearly impossible. Nonetheless, hate seems to be growing across this country. But no place more so than Hamilton, Ontario, which has the infamous title of being the hate crime capital of Canada. Has that city become a cautionary tale for the rest of Canada? Dancing into the Chthulucene: Sensuous Ecological Activism in the 21st Century Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Kelly Perl Klein Graduate Program in Dance Studies The Ohio State University 2019 Dissertation Dr. Harmony Bench, Advisor Dr. Ann Cooper Albright Dr. Hannah Kosstrin Dr. Mytheli Sreenivas Copyrighted by Kelly Perl Klein 2019 2 Abstract This dissertation centers sensuous movement-based performance and practice as particularly powerful modes of activism toward sustainability and multi-species justice in the early decades of the 21st century. Proposing a model of “sensuous ecological activism,” the author elucidates the sensual components of feminist philosopher and biologist Donna Haraway’s (2016) concept of the Chthulucene, articulating how sensuous movement performance and practice interpellate Chthonic subjectivities. The dissertation explores the possibilities and limits of performances of vulnerability, experiences of interconnection, practices of sensitization, and embodied practices of radical inclusion as forms of activism in the context of contemporary neoliberal capitalism and competitive individualism. Two theatrical dance works and two communities of practice from India and the US are considered in relationship to neoliberal shifts in global economic policy that began in the late 1970s. The author analyzes the dance work The Dammed (2013) by the Darpana Academy for Performing Arts in Ahmedabad,
