Abstract 350 words maximum: (PLEASE TYPE) This thesis examines reasons for the success of the Australian Corps in August and September 1918, its final two months in the line on the Western Front. For more than a century, the Corps’ achievements during that time have been used to reinforce a cherished belief in national military exceptionalism by highlighting the exploits and extraordinary fighting ability of the Australian infantrymen, and the modern progressive tactical approach of their native-born commander, Lieutenant-General Sir John Monash. This study re-evaluates the Corps’ performance by examining it at a more comprehensive and granular operational level than has hitherto been the case. What emerges is a complex picture of impressive battlefield success despite significant internal difficulties that stemmed from the particularly strenuous nature of the advance and a desperate shortage of manpower. These played out in chronic levels of exhaustion, absenteeism and ill-discipline within the ranks, and threatened to undermine the Corps’ combat capability. In order to reconcile this paradox, the thesis locates the Corps’ performance within the wider context of the British army and its operational organisation in 1918.

Page: 1 of 23 1.2 More specifically the proposal involves the following: The Hobart Rivulet Path currently extends west from the carpark at 40­44 Molle Street through Council­owned parkland known as 46­48 Molle Street towards the eastern end of McKellar Street. In the vicinity of the eastern end of McKellar Street the path splits ­ a short, relatively steep section of path rises to meet the end of McKellar Street, providing access through to South Hobart, while a flat, dead­end section of path leads to the Korean Grove Memorial. Currently, people visiting the Korean Grove Memorial but wanting to reach South Hobart need to retrace their steps along the dead­end section of path before rejoining the main Rivulet Path which turns back along McKellar Street. Also, the McKellar Street section of the Hobart Rivulet Path is currently in the form of a narrow, gravel foothpath beside the asphalt street. The proposal is to extend the Hobart Rivulet Path through 18 McKellar Street to Gore Street, so that a continuous pedestrian and bicycle link is formed.

    Submission on The Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s commitment to reflecting and representing regional diversity. Date: 19 January 2013 Dear Sir / Madam I believe it is a huge mistake and a dereliction of duties for the current Managing Director of the ABC, Mark Scott to disinvest our national broadcaster of regional assets. The closure of production facilities in WA, SA, Qld and Tasmania appears to represent a move to deliberately devalue the ABC. The move seems irrational when a number of the best and most popular programs on ABC television and radio platforms have been terminated. My concerns and impetus for this letter to this inquiry is that the moves by the Managing Director of the ABC are politically driven. Why would the ABC’s Managing Director want to closed down regional production to simply channel more resources into politically biased programs such as The Drum, the 7:30 Report or the RN’s Breakfast with Fran Kelly. There was value coming out of the production assets in each state. For us the ABC audience (the shareholders), the value of regional production can be measured by the popularity of informative quality productions such as the Gardening Australia. Formerly anchored in Hobart and hosted by Peter Cundall, the Gardening Australia program had a unique quality, not the least because it was produced in Tasmania. It appears irrational to move production of such a quality program to Sydney without Peter Cundall. Then a decision was made to discontinue The Collectors, another quality production from the Tasmanian assets of the ABC. The termination of these two programs from Tasmania represents a reduction in value not only to the national audience (the shareholders) but also and more worrying, a loss of assets in terms of human resources.

(3) Further notes the significant historical importance of the Quamby Parish Trinity Churches, St Marys Church in Hagley, St Andrews Church in Westbury and St Andrews Church in Carrick all feature on the list of properties that may be sold.     1 ANZAC DAY 2019 SERVICE SPEECH BY HER EXCELLENCY PROFESSOR THE HONOURABLE KATE WARNER AC GOVERNOR OF TASMANIA HOBART CENOTAPH, THURSDAY 25 APRIL 2019 I begin by paying my respects to the traditional and original owners of this land: the palawa people. I acknowledge the contemporary Tasmanian Aboriginal community, who have survived invasion and dispossession, and continue to maintain their identity, culture and Indigenous rights. Just over three weeks ago on Sunday 31st March, the Bridge of Remembrance, which links the Cenotaph with the Soldiers Memorial Walk on the Domain, was opened. This Centenary of Anzac Day project is be a lasting memory of the 15,000 Tasmanians who enlisted during the First World War, the 2,500 who died as well as all Australians who served during World War I. A central feature of the ceremony was a smoking ceremony and three Indigenous dances. Speaking at the opening, the Minister for Veteran Affairs the Honourable Darren Chester MP, noted that we should remember the Indigenous Australians who served in World War 1 at a time when they were ineligible to vote. The Centenary of Anzac Day with its particular focus on World War 1 provided an opportunity to consider more broadly the effects of war and the contributions and suffering of those who have not always been specifically and sufficiently acknowledged. The contribution of women, for example, and the different ethnic groupings within the Australian imperial force. The Anzac tradition has been increasingly embraced by contemporary Australians but it is a tradition from which our country’s Indigenous people have felt excluded.1 It is pleasing that there have been attempts to address this.

The casket Sitting on the casket was a forage cap and bayonet. These were supplied from the museum of the 12/40th Battalion, Royal Tasmania Regiment. The cap, which dates back to World War I, was laid on the casket by the Chief of Army, LT GEN Peter Cosgrove, as a tribute by the Australian Army to one of its own. While the Australian Digger has come to be portrayed generally as wearing the famous slouch hat, it was just one of the hats worn by members of the Australian Imperial Force.
