The Budweiser Patio will include a 75-foot LED sign installed above the right-field wall with the capability to display game information, such as pitch count, photos of players and statistics. It will not have video replay because of the size. The new right-field configuration can handle a group of 150 people, or three groups of 50 each, or may be sold on an individual basis. Cubs team president Crane Kenney said the pricing was still to be determined. "What we're finding both for our suites as well as other parts of the ballpark is that people want to be able to circulate -- you see it on the rooftops," Kenney said Saturday after a business management session at the 27th annual Cubs Convention, where the announcement was made. "[It will be] a place where you can bring clients, move around in the space and not just be fixed," Kenney said. "If I'm in seat [No. 1] and my clients are in seats two through eight, I don't get to talk to the person in seat [No. 8]. It's a chance to circulate." Each section of 50 tickets will include both seated and standing-room-only tickets, and an all-inclusive food and beverage package. The Wrigley Field bleachers underwent a major renovation after the 2005 season when they were expanded and a restaurant was added in the batter's eye.

I lusted after the various sports games advertised in the magazines until my mom finally relented and bought Strat-O-Matic Football for me in 1972. I got SOM’s baseball game a year later and I was hooked. I would get the new card set each year and attempt to play the in-progress season by moving the traded players around and turning ‘nameless player cards” into that year’s key rookies. I switched to APBA in the late ‘70’s because they started releasing some complete old season sets and the idea of playing with those really caught my fancy. Between then and the mid-nineties, I collected a lot of card sets.

By Paul Ladewski In the 1971 season, you started 39 games, pitched 325 innings, won 24 games and hit six home runs. Fast forward 37 years. What does it take for the Cubs to sign you now? Now? Probably $14 million, $15 million. Yeah, I think so. I was 28 years old at the time, so the team would probably want to lock me up for five or six years. I'd take five years for $75 million. That wouldn't be bad. (Laughs.) Or I'd take Carlos Zambrano's contract -- $92 million for six years. What was your salary that season? I made $125,000. It was good money then. It was one of the first big contracts that the Cubs gave to a pitcher. My family really enjoyed it. I bought a ranch in Ontario, Canada, at the time, and me and my father worked on it. We were pretty happy with that. What memorabilia did you save from that season? I have a couple bats at home. I also have some jerseys, but I'm not sure if they're from the actual 1971 season because we didn't own the uniforms back then. The ballclubs did. At the end of the season, we handed them back in and got new ones before the next season. Now that you've have time reflect on your Cubs career, what do you remember most about it? It was a lot of fun. I look back at accomplishments, but mostly, we had a lot of fun with the Cubs in my years there.

An A-list crowd turned out at Fourth Presbyterian Church on Saturday morning, memorializing Ernie Banks on what would have been his 84th birthday, remembering his excellence on the field and grace off the field. Sunshine beamed into the stained-glass windows during a ceremony that lasted more than 90 minutes and aired live on multiple TV channels. It almost felt like a Cooperstown exhibit had come to downtown Chicago with Hall of Famers Billy Williams, Hank Aaron, Frank Robinson, Reggie Jackson, Joe Torre, Lou Brock, Andre Dawson and Fergie Jenkins. Banks, who died last week after suffering a heart attack, probably would have wondered what all the fuss was about. He didn’t want to talk about his game — 512 career home runs, a Gold Glove at shortstop and a spot on Major League Baseball’s All-Century Team — or what it was like when he played. “Ernie was unassuming,” Jenkins said. “He didn’t want the title of being a star. He wanted to be a teammate.” Banks would have loved to listen to the laughter and the upbeat music. Calvin Bridges’ Chicago Praise Ensemble sung “This Little Light of Mine” and “Oh Happy Day,” clapping from the balcony. Williams remembered going to spring training as the next big prospect in the late 1950s and can still see that smiling face welcoming him to the organization.

    Honoring Chicago’s Contributions to America’s favorite pastime Santo Legacy Has Its Day in Cooperstown By Paul Ladewski Posted on Sunday, July 22 COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. – Vicki Santo admitted to more than a few tears while she wrote the Hall of Fame induction speech for her late husband Ron, the popular Cubs third baseman and broadcaster. The words came in fits and spurts, sometimes weeks apart. Other than a local baseball writer who shared some on-field stories, she asked for no assistance. After all, no one knew more about her husband's battle against diabetes, one that she had fought with him for years. “It was an emotional time for me,” Vicki admitted to the Chicago Baseball Museum. “I wrote for a few days, but after a while, I found it difficult to stay focused. So I put the speech away and cleared my mind. Then I took it out again and wrote some more.” Vicki Santo addresses the crowd at the Hall of Fame Months later, the result was a poignant address at the Clark induction. Sports Center on a warm, sun-splashed Sunday afternoon. It was a message as unique as the physical challenge that her husband had faced on and off the field throughout his career. In a speech that was remarkably void of baseball talk, Vicki chose to dwell not on his 342 home runs, five consecutive Gold Glove Awards and nine All-Star Game appear- ances but his real legacy on a much larger field. “Ron's baseball career shouldn't be overshadowed by what he did for juvenile diabetes,” Vicki went on to say.

    Page 1 KIT YOUNG’S SALE #128 WE ARE TURNING 40! This month marks our 40th year in business. I started back in the stone ages as a one-man gang, mainly doing shows and eventually advertising in The Trader Speaks, Sports Collectors Digest, then later in Baseball Hobby News, The Sporting News, USA Weekly, The Advertiser and more. I was joined by Scott Cowan when he was a mere child of 15 (he’s now 51), then within a short time by Rob Rosen, Bob Ivanjack & Nacho Arredondo. These 4 stalwarts have been my partners for a combined 110 years (average 27 years each). I’ve noted before that we started before there were official price guides and long before words like “faxing”, “emailing” and “Googling” were part of our world. It’s hard to believe but we opened our doors before Microsoft, Home Depot & Costco even existed. It’s been a great ride so far. Some of our clients have dealt with us for 20-30 years, some longer. It’s still a kick to go to a big card show and have people stop by to say they ordered their first card from us. They usually say they ordered with they were 9-12. These collectors now are often 40-50. Crazy! Special thanks to the 100,000+ collectors we’ve served over the past 4 decades. I look forward to the coming years.
