The pur pose of this prograrnme is threefold: 1. To strengthen Nordic research on Soutern Africa. 2. To increase the capacity for studies of topics relevant to the dis cussion on future Nordic development assistance to Southern Africa. 3. To provide information about Southern Africa with the aim of increasing the level ofknowledge about the region in the Nordic countries. Two main issues constitute the core of the prograrnme. One is South Africa in Southern Africa, containing analyses of the role of South Africa in the region from different perspectives, such as the economic dependency of the front line states, the South African destabilization of those states and effects of international sanctions on South Africa and the region. other issue is SADDC countries and their adjustment to regional and international devel opment, including a critical analysis of the effects of the economic structural adjustment prograrnmes supported by the World Bank and the IMF. At the initial phase of the programme, which was launched early 1988, the main thrust of the work was to collect and structure in formation and to improve the network of researchers and research institutions within the Nordic countries as weIl as the linkages with those in Southern Africa and other comparable research centres. The Inventory should be seen in this perspective and could hope fully facilitate contacts and "networking" not only between re searchers, but also other interesting parties, for instance in media, aid communities and solidarity movements. The Inventory contains data on 93 researchers and projects, to be found in the main part on pages l - 124. Indexes according to name of researcher, academic discipline, field of research and I..InCan country/countries topically involved are on pages i - also an on As the Inventory is on social science research the reader might be surprised at finding academic disciplines such as architecture, edu cation, theology and engineering & natural science in the index. This is so because the projects involved have a social science per spective, although outside those disciplines. Deliberately we have not used a stringent definition of social science. As our intention is to facilitate contacts between people involved in projects on Southem Africa, and we know they are not too many in the Nordic countries, we prefer to have a wider network with more open ended definitions. The Inventory is based on questionnaires to individual re searchers and institutions in the Nordic countries and provides the information given by those who have responded. A first round of questionnaires was sent out in 1988 and a draft Inventory was pub lished in September that year. The present Inventory is based upon a corrected version of this draft and additional questionnaires dis tribued in early 1989. We guess that some relevant researchers are still not inc1uded, due either to us not reaching them or their non-responding. But we hope that the Inventory in its present shape will facilitate contacts and information between researchers and other interested parties in what is going on in the area of social science research on Southem Africa in the Nordic countries. The Inventory has been carried out and edited for the Southem Africa Programme by Peter Magnusson and Bent J!Z>rgensen at the Department of Peace and Development Research of Gothenburg Univeristy. Their efforts and dedication are highly appreciated.
