Beug: Chair, NAMA Toxicology Committee Assessing the degree of amatoxin mushroom poisoning in North America is very challenging. Understanding the potential for various treatment practices is even more daunting. Although I have been studying mushroom poisoning for 45 years now, my own views on potential best treatment practices are still evolving. While my training in enzyme kinetics helps me understand the literature about amatoxin poisoning treatments, my lack of medical training limits me. Fortunately, critical comments from six different medical doctors have been incorporated in this article. All six, each concerned about different aspects in early drafts, returned me to the peer reviewed scientific literature for additional reading. There remains no known specific antidote for amatoxin poisoning. There have not been any gold standard double-blind placebo controlled studies. There never can be. When dealing with a potentially deadly poisoning (where in many non-western countries the amatoxin fatality rate exceeds 50%) treating of half of all poisoning patients with a placebo would be unethical. Using amatoxins on large animals to test new treatments (theoretically a great alternative) has ethical constraints on the experimental design that would most likely obscure the answers researchers sought. We must thus make our best judgement based on analysis of past cases. Although that number is now large enough that we can make some good assumptions, differences of interpretation will continue. Nonetheless, we may be on the cusp of reaching some agreement. Towards that end, I have contacted several Poison Centers and NAMA will be working with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). -

The species are valuable in medicine and nutritious for human health. However, there are some species belonging to this genus are toxic, especially the species belonging to Amanita Dill. Ex Boehm. The investigation of the species was carried out in Chu Yang Sin national park. The results showed that 15 species of Amanita Dill. Ex Boehm were recorded: (1) Amanita abrupta; (2) Amanita amanitoides; (3) Amanita caesareoides; (4) Amanita caesarea; (5) Amanita cokeri ; (6) Amanita concentrica; (7) Amanita flavoconia; (8) Amanita levistriata; (9) Amanita multisquamosa; (10) Amanita pantherina; (11) Amanita phalloides; (12) Amanita pilosella, (13) Amanita solitaria; (14) Amanita subcokeri; (15) Amanit vaginata .Within 15 species were identified, eight species were newly added to the list of predominant fungi in the Central Highlands of Vietnam included: Amanita abrupta, Amanita amanitoides, Amanita concentrica, Amanita flavoconia, Amanita levistriata, Amanita multisquamosa, Amanita pilosella, Amanita solitaria. Most of the collected Amanita species showed bright colors with a base or fungal rings. They live in areas with high moisture (>85%), at altitude from 800 – 1200 m above sea level, annually occur from June to November and are saprotrophic on soil, under tree shades, especially coniferous, semi-evergreen trees and on greensward or shrubs. -

In two species, T. josserandii and T. terreum, the spores are also partly dextrinoid. This result provides strong indication that a positive reaction of the spores in Melzer’s reagent could be a character shared by all genera in Tricholomataceae s. str. THE SOCIETY LIBRARY CATALOGUE The BMS Council agreed, many years ago, to expand the Society's collection of books and develop it into a Library, in order to make it freely available to members. The books were originally housed at the (then) Commonwealth Mycological Institute and from 1990 - 2006 at the Herbarium, then in the Jodrell Laboratory,Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, by invitation of the Keeper. The Library now comprises over 1100 items. Development of the Library has depended largely on the generosity of members. Many offers of books and monographs, particularly important taxonomic works, and gifts of money to purchase items, are gratefully acknowledged. The rules for the loan of books are as follows: Books may be borrowed at the discretion of the Librarian and requests should be made, preferably by post or e-mail and stating whether a BMS member, to: The Librarian, British Mycological Society, Jodrell Laboratory Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, Richmond, Surrey TW9 3AB Email: <[email protected]> No more than two volumes may be borrowed at one time, for a period of up to one month, by which time books must be returned or the loan renewed. The borrower will be held liable for the cost of replacement of books that are lost or not returned. BMS Members do not have to pay postage for the outward journey. For the return journey, books must be returned securely packed and postage paid. Non-members may be able to borrow books at the discretion of the Librarian, but all postage costs must be paid by the borrower. -
How to Distinguish Amanita Smithiana from Matsutake and Catathelasma Species

Beug: Chair, NAMA Toxicology Committee A recent rash of mushroom poisonings involving liver failure in Oregon prompted Michael Beug to issue the following photos and information on distinguishing the differences between the toxic Amanita smithiana and edible Matsutake and Catathelasma. Distinguishing the choice edible Amanita smithiana Amanita smithiana Matsutake (Tricholoma magnivelare) from the highly poisonous Amanita smithiana is best done by laying the stipe (stem) of the mushroom in the palm of your hand and then squeezing down on the stipe with your thumb, applying as much pressure as you can. Amanita smithiana is very firm but if you squeeze hard, the stipe will shatter. Matsutake The stipe of the Matsutake is much denser and will not shatter (unless it is riddled with insect larvae and is no longer in good edible condition). There are other important differences. The flesh of Matsutake peels or shreds like string cheese. Also, the stipe of the Matsutake is widest near the gills Matsutake and tapers gradually to a point while the stipe of Amanita smithiana tends to be bulbous and is usually widest right at ground level. The partial veil and ring of a Matsutake is membranous while the partial veil and ring of Amanita smithiana is powdery and readily flocculates into small pieces (often disappearing entirely). For most people the difference in odor is very distinctive. Most collections of Amanita smithiana have a bleach-like odor while Matsutake has a distinctive smell of old gym socks and cinnamon redhots (however, not all people can distinguish the odors). -
