Metro-Cammell Diesel-Electric Pullman Trains By R. P. Bradley On 24 June 1960 a demonstration run of BR's diesel-electric Pullman train took place between Marylebone and High Wycombe. The six and eight-car trains were designed and built by the Metropolitan-Cammell Carriage & Wagon Co. for the Pullman Car Company, to be operated on the LMR and WR respectively. The Railway Gazette used an interesting phrase as it reported the new arrivals; "The term de-luxe applied by the British Transport Commission to the new diesel- electric Pullman multiple- unit trains which begin operations shortly in the London Midland and Western Regions of British Railways suggests an over-abundance of rare but desirable qualities which are not necessary for life." The British Transport Commission’s Press Release for 23rd June 1960 described them as: “These 90 mph de-luxe diesel expresses - there are five of them altogether-are of an entirely new type designed to bring a fresh conception of main-line railway passenger travel to Britain, with superior standards of comfort, and a personal service of' meals and refreshments for all passengers.” A brief look at the internal appointments of these trains certainly lends weight to those ideas. One of the 8-car Western Region units on the Bristol Pullman. The reasoning behind the introduction of these units was basically to attract the businessman to rail travel; or perhaps to return to rail travel, for BR had by 1960 to be on a competitive footing with air transport. The new Metro- Cammell pullmans were prestigious trains, and turned out in a striking blue and white livery. -

Uni-link FAQ: 1. Q: How do I recognise Uni-link buses? A: All Uni-link buses are blue and look like in the pictures attached below. They have the clear blue and white Uni-link logo, as well as the University of Southampton logo on them. Most of them are also double-decker buses. 2. Q: What is a double-decker bus? A: A double-decker bus is a bus that has two stories, also called decks. The London double- decker buses are red, while the Southampton Uni-link double-deckers are blue. 3. Q: Are these buses for students only? A: No, anyone can use them. Moreover, students and university staff may get a special discount when buying weekly, monthly or annual passes. 4. Q: What do I need in order to be able to use the Uni-link bus routes? A: You need to buy a paper ticket on board or to own a bus pass (called the key) that you can order and top up online, or purchase at the Uni-link Office (located on the Highfield Campus, above the Students Union Shop). If you live in a University hall of Residence, you should have received a free annual Uni-link bus pass (the key) as part of your Welcome pack. You will be given your Welcome pack when you check- in at your halls. The National Rail Enquiries (NRE) website appears to have coped well with very high volumes 2. The online real time journey planner on the NRE website did not show correct information for some train operating companies (TOCs) 3. The online journey planners on TOC and third-party websites did not generally reflect the contingency timetables in operation 4. Tickets continued to be available for sale online for many trains that would not run 5. Station displays appear to have reflected formal contingency timetables, except for Southeastern 6. Station displays and online Live Departure Boards did not always keep pace with events 7. The NRE call centres appear to have provided good information, but queuing times of 11 or 12 minutes were common. 1 The National Rail Enquiries appears to have coped well with very high volumes We saw no evidence that the NRE website crashed or was slower than usual, despite a large spike in volume (Chris Scoggins reported that the volume on 2 December was twice the previous record peak on 7 January 2010). 2 The online real time journey planner on the NRE website did not show correct information for some train operating companies NRE had to advise passengers not to use the journey planner for enquiries about East Coast, Southeastern and South West Trains. Competition Issues in Road Transport 2000 The OECD Competition Committee debated competition issues in road transport in October 2000. This document includes an executive summary and the documents from the meeting: an analytical note by Mr. Darryl Biggar for the OECD, written submissions from Australia, the Czech Republic, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain, Turkey, the United States, as well as an aide-memoire of the discussion. The road transport sector, an essential mode of transport in OECD economies, is conventionally divided into two, largely unrelated, parts – the road freight industry and the road passenger industry. The sectors under discussion – trucking, buses, and taxis – have quite different characteristics and scope for competition, which reflect inter alia differences in the timeliness and economies of scale and scope in operations. Trucking can sustain high level of competition and to some extent buses as well while there is some debate as to how and what form of competition can be introduced in taxis. As in the air transport industry, international trucking is governed by restrictive bilateral treaties. Most countries have liberalised their domestic trucking sector, removing controls on entry and prices. In the bus industry, long-distance bus services are liberalised in some countries while intra-city or local buses are very rarely liberalised. The taxi industry appears at first sight to be competitive with many buyers and many sellers. 2021 Book News Welcome to our 2021 Book News. As we come towards the end of a very strange year we hope that you’ve managed to get this far relatively unscathed. It’s been a very challenging time for us all and we’re just relieved that, so far, we’re mostly all in one piece. While we were closed over lockdown, Mark took on the challenge of digitalising some of Venture’s back catalogue producing over 20 downloadable books of some of our most popular titles. Thanks to the kind donations of our customers we managed to raise over £3000 for The Christie which was then matched pound for pound by a very good friend taking the total to almost £7000. There is still time to donate and download these books, just click on the downloads page on our website for the full list. We’re still operating with reduced numbers in the building at any one time. We’ve re-organised our schedules for packers and office staff to enable us to get orders out as fast as we can, but we’re also relying on carriers and suppliers. Many of the publishers whose titles we stock are small societies or one-man operations so please be aware of the longer lead times when placing orders for Christmas presents. The last posting dates for Christmas are listed on page 63 along with all the updates in light of the current Covid situation and also the impending Brexit deadline. In particular, please note the change to our order and payment processing which was introduced on 1st July 2020. -
