ANDERSON HARVARD DIVINITY SCHOOL CAMBRIDGE, MA USA ABSTRACT In the Life of Adam and Eve, Satan “the first-born” refused to venerate Adam, the “latter-born.” Later writers had difficulty with the tale because it granted Adam honors that were proper to Christ (Philippians 2:10, “at the name of Jesus, every knee should bend.”) The tale of Satan’s fall was then altered to reflect this Christological sensibility. Milton created a story of Christ’s elevation prior to the creation of man. Ephrem, on the other hand, moved the story to Holy Saturday. In Hades, Death acknowledged Christ as the true first- born whereas Satan rejected any such acclamation. [1] For some time I have pondered the problem of Satan’s fall in early Jewish and Christian sources. My point of origin has been the justly famous account found in the Life of Adam and Eve (hereafter: Life).1 1 See G. Anderson I say justly famous because the Life itself existed in six versions- Greek, Latin, Armenian, Georgian, Slavonic, and Coptic (now extant only in fragments)-yet the tradition that the Life drew on is present in numerous other documents from Late Antiquity.2 And one should mention its surprising prominence in Islam-the story was told and retold some seven times in the Koran and was subsequently subject to further elaboration among Muslim exegetes and storytellers.3 My purpose in this essay is to carry forward work I have already done on this text to the figures of St. -

The Epigraphy of the Tophet
ISSN 2239-5393 The Epigraphy of the Tophet Maria Giulia Amadasi Guzzo – José Ángel Zamora López (Sapienza Università di Roma – CSIC, Madrid) Abstract The present contribution reassesses the main aspects of the epigraphic sources found in the so-called tophet in order to demonstrate how they are significant and how they undermine the funerary interpretations of these precincts. The inscriptions decisively define the tophet as a place of worship, a sanctuary where sacrifices were made to specific deities in specific rites. The epigraphic evidence combined with literary and archaeological data show how these sacrifices consisted of infants and small animals (either as substitutes or interred together), sometimes commemorated by the inscriptions themselves. Introduction Our basic knowledge of the special type of Phoenician and Punic sanctuaries called tophet (a conventional term taken from the Hebrew Bible) seems to be based on wide variety of sources that can be combined to provide an overall interpretation. In fact, archaeological research now provides us with relatively substantial knowledge of the geographical and chronological distribution of these sacred sites and of their structure. Present in some central Mediterranean Phoenician settlements (including on Sardinia) from their foundation, or shortly after, they persist and multiply in North Africa at a later period, generally after the destruction of Carthage1. They worshiped worthless idols, only to become worthless themselves. 11 Has any nation ever traded its gods for new ones, even though they are not gods at all? Yet my people have exchanged their glorious God for worthless idols! 13 “For my people have done two evil things: They have abandoned me— the fountain of living water. And they have dug for themselves cracked cisterns that can hold no water at all! 20b “On every hill and under every green tree, you have prostituted yourselves by bowing down to idols.” 27 To an image carved from a piece of wood they say, ‘You are my father.’ To an idol chiseled from a block of stone they say, ‘You are my mother.’ They turn their backs on me, but in times of trouble they cry out to me, ‘Come and save us!’ 28 But why not call on these gods you have made? Dear brothers, w e w ill start lesson 12 of Surat Al Araaf interpreting the Ayah (verse) 27: ”O Children of Adam! Let not Shaitan (Satan) deceive you, as he got your parents [Adam and Haw w a (Eve)] out of Paradise, stripping them of their raiments, to show them their private parts. Verily, he and Qabiluhu (his soldiers from the jinns or his tribe) see you from where you cannot see them. Verily, We made the Shayatin (devils) Auliya' (protectors and helpers) for those who believe not.” [Surat Al-A’raf 7, verse 27] Kinds of Objects in Terms of Methods of Perception Dear brothers, it is a revelation matter in regard of Jinn, w hile all the materialistic objects that have entity and trace, are perceived by the five senses or their extensions such as Telescopes and Microscopes. -

Explaining The Nephilim Giants ‘When mankind began to multiply on the earth and daughters were born to them, the ‘sons of God’ (fallen angels) saw the daughters of men (human women) were beautiful and they took (raped) all the women they desired and chose. (As a result) there were Nephilim on the earth in those days and also afterwards when the ‘sons of God’ (fallen angels) lived with the daughters of mankind and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown’ (Genesis 6:1,2 & 4). ‘The people who dwell in the land are strong and the cities are fortified and very great. We saw the children (descendents) of Anak there … Amalek dwells in the land of the South … They brought up an evil report of the land they had spied out to the Children of Israel saying, “The land where we spied out is a land that eats up its inhabitants. All the people who we saw in it are men of great stature (giants). There we saw the Nephilim, the sons (descendents) of Anak who come of the Nephilim and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers and so we were in their sight’” (Numbers 13:28, 29, 32 & 33). These evil beings called the Nephilim were the wicked giant offspring born to the women who had been raped by the fallen angels referred to as ‘the sons of God’. The Nephilim ‘men of renown’ were not decent men who were well known, they were vicious, violent, wicked half human, half fallen angels who later brought into existence the Amalek and Anakim (plural of Anak). -
