During the world-wide sesqui - centennial cele bra ion s I t of the birth of Robert Burns, read with much interest of the beautiful statues of the poet which adorn many of the leading cities of the m world, and it occurred to me that the ti e was ripe for a statue of the Scottish poet to be erected in Detroit the Beautiful . The municipal statuary of the City of the Straits has lagged far behind the ’ city s growth , and many fine sites are available for ’ an inspiring representation of the People s Bard . With the idea of ultimately raising enthusiasm for such a project, I began to seek for informa tion throughout the world regarding existing statues and memorials of Burns . In places where one woul d expect to learn everything to be learned regarding Burns memorials , I found the well of information rather dry . On the other hand, from obscure corners of the globe, I learned of statues and busts of the poet concernin g which ’ not on e in one hundred of Burns admirers had the faintest knowledge . Therefore the publication of a volume such as this seemed to me to be some VI P REFACE a a wh t of a necessity, and at the solicit tion of many leaders of the Burns cult throughout the world, I undertook the task of publishing this complete, ’ illustrated account of the World s Memorials of the oet . T e various statues and memorials have been described in the chronological order of their n u or veiling inauguration, and at the end have been given descriptions of the memorials to some of ’ Burns more famous heroines . In addition there have been added many appreciations of Burns by noted men and women of all countries , from the ’ poet s time to the present . For nearly three years I have been in communi cation with lovers of Burns in every quarter of the a re globe, and have made many unseen but pp s ci ted friends .     Edinburgh Graveyards Project: Documentary Survey For Canongate Kirkyard --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Canongate 1.1. Background Canongate’s close proximity to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, which is situated at the eastern end of Canongate Burgh, has been influential on both the fortunes of the Burgh and the establishment of Canongate Kirk. In 1687, King James VII declared that the Abbey Church of Holyroodhouse was to be used as the chapel for the re-established Order of the Thistle and for the performance of Catholic rites when the Royal Court was in residence at Holyrood. The nave of this chapel had been used by the Burgh of Canongate as a place of Protestant worship since the Reformation in the mid sixteenth century, but with the removal of access to the Abbey Church to practise their faith, the parishioners of Canongate were forced to find an alternative venue in which to worship. Fortunately, some 40 years before this edict by James VII, funds had been bequeathed to the inhabitants of Canongate to erect a church in the Burgh - and these funds had never been spent. This money was therefore used to build Canongate Kirk and a Kirkyard was laid out within its grounds shortly after building work commenced in 1688. 1 Development It has been ruminated whether interments may have occurred on this site before the construction of the Kirk or the landscaping of the Kirkyard2 as all burial rights within the church had been removed from the parishioners of the Canongate in the 1670s, when the Abbey Church had became the chapel of the King.3 The earliest known plan of the Kirkyard dates to 1765 (Figure 1), and depicts a rectilinear area on the northern side of Canongate burgh with arboreal planting 1 John Gifford et al., Edinburgh, The Buildings of Scotland: Pevsner Architectural Guides (London : Penguin, 1991).

They were made for singing an no forreadin: butye hae broken the charm noo, and they'll never be sung mair.'l Mrs. Laidlaw was perhaps unaware that others had been printing Scottish songs from the oral tradition in great numbers for at least the previous hundred years in volumes such as Allan Ramsay's The Tea-Table Miscellany (1723-37), Orpheus Caledonius (1733) compiled by William Thompson, James Oswald's The Cale­ donian Pocket Companion (1743, 1759), Ancient and Modern Scottish Songs (1767, 1770) edited by David Herd, James Johnson's Scots Musical Museum (1787-1803) and A Select Collection of Original Scotish Airs (1793-1818) compiled by George Thompson-substantial contributions having been made to the latter two collections by Robert Burns.

Montgomery How Robert Burns Captured America Before America discovered Robert Bums, Robert Bums had discovered America. This self-described ploughman poet knew well the surge of freedom which dominated much of Europe and North America in the waning days of the eight­ eenth century. Bums understood the spirit and the politics of the fledgling United States. He studied the battles of both ideas and infantry. Check your knowledge of American history against Bums's. These few lines from his "Ballad on the American War" trace the Revolution from the Boston Tea Party, through the Colonists' invasion of Canada, the siege of Boston, the stalemated occupation of Philadelphia and New York, the battle of Saratoga, the southern campaign and Clinton's failure to support Cornwallis at Yorktown. Guilford, as in Guilford Court House, was the family name of Prime Minister Lord North.     Victoria Embankment Foreshore Hoarding Commission 1 Introduction ‘The Thames Wunderkammer: Tales from Victoria Embankment in Two Parts’, 2017, by Simon Roberts, commissioned by Tideway This is a temporary commission located on the Thames Tideway Tunnel construction site hoardings at Victoria Embankment, 2017-19. Responding to the rich heritage of the Victoria Embankment, Simon Roberts has created a metaphorical ‘cabinet of curiosities’ along two 25- metre foreshore hoardings. Roberts describes his approach as an ‘aesthetic excavation of the area’, creating an artwork that reflects the literal and metaphorical layering of the landscape, in which objects from the past and present are juxtaposed to evoke new meanings. Monumental statues are placed alongside items that are more ordinary; diverse elements, both man-made and natural, co-exist in new ways. All these components symbolise the landscape’s complex history, culture, geology, and development.     Reflections The Magazine of Kay Park Parish Church Issue No 27 April - May 2017 FROM THE MANSE Gary Noonan Easter Sunday sees the end of Gary’s placement with us. In one paragraph of his final report from me, I have written:“ He feels – and patently is – called to the Ministry of Word and Sacrament, and to Parish Ministry. That call must be affirmed in him at the close of every service which he has conducted when the people respond as positively as they have done. He shows a fiery enthusiasm for the old role of Minister but is genuinely open to the new ways which are ahead.” Kay Park, Minister and people, have really enjoyed having him, and also getting to know Ruth, Robbie and Gregor. He goes on to Probation at Alloway Parish Church with the Rev. Neil McNaught. Our thanks, prayers and affection go with him. Farewell St. Paul ends his 2nd letter to the Corinthians Church (v.11) with“ And now, my friends, farewell….” I prefer Eugene Peterson’s version in “The Message”, “And that’s about it, friends”. My retirement on May 7th does not, I hope, mean, “Farewell”; the reason Joan and I are staying in the town (although at the opposite end!) is because of all the friendships we have made here, especially in the congregation: these are not ending. But, as far as being your Minister is concerned, “That’s about it”! What a privilege it has been! I have loved leading worship here; I have felt a deep two- way interaction with the congregation (that doesn’t happen everywhere, believe me!) which has helped me to grow and develop my own faith and proclamation of it.

All things break. And all things can be mended. Not with time, as they say, but with intention. So, go. Love intentionally, extravagantly, unconditionally. The broken world waits in darkness for the light that is you.” (L.R. Knost) I was reminded of these words this week having, in the past, found them helpful and reassuring. Take a moment and consider the word ‘brokenness’, which if you ‘google’ you will find explained thus… 1. having been broken. "he had a broken arm" synonyms: smashed · shattered · burst · fragmented · splintered · shivered · crushed · 2. (of a person) having given up all hope; despairing. "he went to his grave a broken man" synonyms: defeated · beaten · vanquished · overpowered · overwhelmed · subdued · 3. having breaks or gaps in continuity. "a broken white line across the road" synonyms: interrupted · disturbed · fitful · disrupted · disconnected · discontinuous · fragmentary · intermittent · unsettled · sporadic · spasmodic · erratic · troubled · incomplete 4. having an uneven and rough surface. "he pressed onwards over the broken ground" synonyms: uneven · rough · irregular · bumpy · jagged · ragged · craggy · rutted · pitted · rutty Where do we experience ‘brokenness’ in our lives, our families, our church, our community, our world? Stop, get a piece of paper and pen and note down what comes to mind. Then in the days to come bring the situations and people you have noted down to God in prayer. In Isaiah chapter 42 v 16 we find these words: ‘I will lead the blind by ways they have not known, along unfamiliar paths I will guide them; I will turn darkness into light before them, and make the rough places smooth’ As always, thank you to everyone who has contributed to ‘Reflections’ this month: thank you too to Eleanor Hamilton and her team for all their work.
