  • OLYMPIC GAMES ATHENS August 13 - 29, 2004
Y.E.A.H. - Young Europeans Active and Healthy OLYMPIC GAMES ATHENS August 13 - 29, 2004 BACK HOME... eliminated in prior rounds of voting. Six other cities submitted applications, but their bids were dropped by the IOC in 1996. These cities were Istanbul, Lille, Rio de Janeiro, San Juan, The 2004 Summer Olympic Seville, Saint Petersburg and Cali. Games (Greek: Therinoí Olympiakoí Agónes 2004 ), officially known as the Games of the XXVIII Olympiad and commonly known as Athens 2004, were held in Athens, Greece, from 13 to 29 August 2004 with the motto Welcome Home. 10,625 athletes competed, some 600 more than expected, accompanied by 5,501 team officials from 201 countries. There were 301 medal events in 28 different sports. Athens 2004 marked the first time since the 1996 Summer Olympics that all countries with a National Olympic Committee were in attendance. 2004 also marked the return of the games to the city where they began. Having previously hosted the Summer Olympic Games in 1896, Athens became one of only a handful of cities to have hosted the Summer Games twice or more (together with London, Paris, and Los Angeles). The 2004 Summer Games were hailed as "unforgettable, dream games" by IOC President Jacques Rogge, and left Athens with a significantly improved infrastructure, including a new airport, ring road, and subway system. The cost of the 2004 Athens Summer Games has been cited as a contributor to the Greek government-debt crisis. Some of the venues lie vacant and rotting, while others are in use; the ones at the Olympic Park and others in the coastal area are in regular use.

  • DE GRASSE FINALLY GETS HIS GOLD, KORIR LEADS KENYAN ONE-TWO FINISH Syrian Weightlifter Wins Bronze
ARAB TIMES, THURSDAY, AUGUST 5, 2021 16 Emmanuel Korir, of Kenya, races to win the gold medal ahead of Ferguson Rotich, of Kenya, silver, and Patryk Do- bek, of Poland, bronze, in the fi nal of the men’s 800-meter at the 2020 Summer Olym- pics in Tokyo, Japan. (AP) Sports Latest sports scores at — http://sports.arabtimesonline.com DE GRASSE FINALLY GETS HIS GOLD, KORIR LEADS KENYAN ONE-TWO FINISH Syrian weightlifter wins bronze Talakhadze breaks records; Yosozumi solidifies Japan dominance as Romashina claims record title TOKYO, Aug 4, (AP): Man Asaad of Syria took the bronze with a total 424kg for his country’s first med- al since its civil war began a decade ago. Syria’s last Olympic medal in any sport was a boxing bronze in 2004. “The medal means a lot to me and a lot to my country, Syria,” Asaad said through an interpreter. Lasha Talakhadze pumped every- one up with three world records on the final day of Olympic competition in weightlifting. The defending champion from Georgia lifted 223 kilograms in the snatch and 265kg in the clean and jerk for a total 488kg on Wednesday. All three figures broke his own world re- cords in the over-109kg men’s super- heavyweight category. Ali Davoudi of Iran was left in sec- ond place by the vast margin of 47kg. Even Talakhadze’s starting lifts were more than anyone else attempt- ed, which meant he had to lift three times back-to-back in each half of the competition. Talakhadze immediately pledged to return for a third Olympic gold in 2024, and his feat in Tokyo raised the question of whether he could be- come the first man to lift the once undreamed-of total of 500kg.
