NEW MUSEUM PRESENTS “GRIEF AND GRIEVANCE: ART AND MOURNING IN AMERICA,” AN INTERGENERATIONAL EXHIBITION OF WORKS FROM THIRTY-SEVEN ARTISTS, CONCEIVED BY CURATOR OKWUI ENWEZOR Exhibition Brings Together Works that Address Black Grief as a National Emergency in the Face of a Politically Orchestrated White Grievance New York, NY...The New Museum is proud to present “Grief and Grievance: Art and Mourning in America,” an exhibition originally conceived by Okwui Enwezor (1963-2019) for the New Museum, and presented with curatorial support from advisors Naomi Beckwith, Massimiliano Gioni, Glenn Ligon, and Mark Nash. On view from February 17 to June 6, 2021, “Grief and Grievance” is an intergenerational exhibition bringing together thirty-seven artists working in a variety of mediums who have addressed the concept of mourning, commemoration, and loss as a direct response to the national emergency of racist violence experienced by Black communities across America. The exhibition further considers the intertwined phenomena of Black grief and a politically orchestrated white grievance, as each structures and defines contemporary American social and political life. Included in “Grief and Grievance” are works encompassing video, painting, sculpture, installation, photography, sound, and performance made in the last decade, along with several key historical works and a series of new commissions created in response to the concept of the exhibition. GREETINGS and NON-VERBAL CUSTOMS in OUR COUNTRIES in REUNION ISLAND People in Reunion Island won't hesitate to greet people they know by giving each other a kiss on each cheek. They say hello when they cross people in the street. They usually gesticulate while talking. The distance they will keep depends on familiarity and level of comfort. The first time you meet a Reunionese woman you can give her kisses on cheeks, if you meet a man you must shake his hand. Among teenagers, there are different ways to say hello: if there are two girls, they give hugs and kisses on cheeks. It's the same between girls and boys. But if there are two boys, they fist-bump each other. In the street, two girls who are close friends can hold their hands but it's totally forbidden between two boys. Hugging, kissing and touching is usually reserved for family members and very close friends. In a family living in the same house, a brother and a sister don't usually kiss each other unless they are far-away for a long time. When adults meet teenagers or kids, they always give kisses. Between an elderly person and young people, handshaking is a sign of respect. Of course, at work or when you meet a person who has a certain authority, you must handshake. in Romania In Romania handshaking is the most popular form of greeting, not only when you meet them for the first time. Although they are friends, Romanians shake their hands between men, women and teenagers. -

President Reports Gary Pisel HAPPY LOCKDOWN GREETINGS TO ALL MEMBERS Well the past few weeks and months have been a rude awakening for our past lifestyles. Vacations and cruises cancelled, all the major league sports cancelled, the airline industry reduced to the bare minimum. Luckily, I have not heard of many pilots or flight attendants contracting COVID19. Hopefully as we start to reopen the USA things will bounce back. The airlines at present are running at full capacity but with several restrictions. Now is the time to plan ahead. We have a RNPA cruise on Norwegian Cruise Lines next April. Things will be back to the new normal. -

Goodman Gallery Hank Willis Thomas Biography Hank Willis Thomas (b. 1976, New Jersey, United States) is a conceptual artist working primarily with themes related to perspective, identity, commodity, media, and popular culture. Thomas has exhibited throughout the United States and abroad including the International Center of Photography, New York; Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, Spain; Musée du quai Branly, Paris; Hong Kong Arts Centre, Hong Kong, and the Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art, Netherlands. Thomas’ work is included in numerous public collections including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Brooklyn Museum, New York; High Museum of Art, Atlanta, and National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C. His collaborative projects include Question Bridge: Black Males, In Search Of The Truth (The Truth Booth), Writing on the Wall, and the artist-run initiative for art and civic engagement For Freedoms, which in 2017 was awarded the ICP Infinity Award for New Media and Online Platform. Thomas is also the recipient of the Gordon Parks Foundation Fellowship (2019), the Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship (2018), Art for Justice Grant (2018), AIMIA | AGO Photography Prize (2017), Soros Equality Fellowship (2017), and is a member of the New York City Public Design Commission. Thomas holds a B.F.A. from New York University (1998) and an M.A./M.F.A. from the California College of the Arts (2004). In 2017, he received honorary doctorates from the Maryland Institute of Art and the Institute for Doctoral Studies in the Visual Arts. 2003–2004 ANNUAL REPORT SAM Students with Sanislo Feast SAM CONNECTS ART TO LIFE CONTEMPORARY CHINESE ARTIST LI JIN’S A FEAST made a permanent impression on the fourth- and fifth-grade students at Sanislo Elementary School. Inspired by the fifty-nine- foot-long painting depicting food from a traditional Chinese dinner on a background of recipes written in Chinese calligraphy, the students set out to re-create their own version. Art teachers Ruth Winter and Carolyn Autenrieth designed the project to celebrate the diversity of cultures at their school. Students painted their favorite ethnic foods, and staff helped transcribe the recipes into the students’ original languages. On display at the Seattle Asian Art Museum last spring, the students’ work, Sanislo Feast, a fifty-foot-long art scroll portraying food and languages from seventeen different nations and cultures, reflected the heritage of Sanislo students and staff.
