Pilgrim DEPT, OF ZOOLOGY, UNIVERSITY OF CANTERBURY, NEW ZEALAND Abstract: Anisodactylus binotatus Fabr. 1787 (Col.: Carabidae), an introduced species now established in Canterbury (South Island), New Zealand, is reported for the first time. The literature respecting other carabids sometimes recorded as introduced is reviewed; Ago- nochila binotata (White, 1846), Agonum submetallicum (White, 1846), Hypharpax australasiae (Dejean, 1829) and Pentagonica vittipennis Chaudoir, 1877 are shown to be better considered as endemic to the Australia - New Zealand area. Other species are classed as either native to New Zealand, clearly introduced though not all established, or of doubtful occurrence in New Zealand. Introduction: The Carabidae of New Zealand are predominantly endemic species, but a small number of exotic species has been recorded. This paper reports a further introduc tion to the carabid fauna of this country and concludes with a survey of recorded exotic Carabidae in New Zealand. Specimens of the newly-recorded species were collected in domestic gardens in Christ church, and were included in a collection sent for identification to Dr. E. B. Britton, British Museum (Nat. Hist.), who kindly drew the writer's attention to the fact that they were so far unreported from New Zealand. Description of adult (from New Zealand specimens) Fig. 1. Kowari Survey – Clifton Hills and Pandie Pandie Station December 2007 (Pedler & Read) 47 ii Summary: This paper reports on a presence/absence population status and distribution survey primarily for the Kowari (Dasycercus byrnei) in areas of known or likely habitat in Sturts Stony Desert, north-eastern South Australia. The survey was carried out between 27th August to 11th September 2007 on Mulka, Cowarie, Pandie Pandie, Innamincka and Cordillo Downs pastoral leases. The Kowari’s major habitat areas on Clifton Hills Pastoral Lease were not sampled as access was not approved by the property manager. Monitoring traplines followed typical Kowari survey standards with aluminium box/treadle traps (Elliott Type A) placed 100 metres apart on 10 kilometre long transects sampling ideal habitat over two trap-nights. The only variation from this standard was the pairing of traps at each station, one having bait specifically for Kowaris and other carnivorous species, the other baited for general sampling. Trapping was carried out at 6 locations over 12 nights with an approximate intensity of 400 trap-nights per sample. -

During the last eight decades, fewer than 80 publications have dealt specifically with sessile rotifers, while more than 7600 articles have focused on rotifers in general. In this work research on the sessile rotifers with emphasis on the Mexican fauna has been reviewed and some additional information on the new records has been included. Difficulties involved in collection and maintenance of sessile rotifers, as well as problems of identification and quantification have been considered. Published data on the ecology and taxonomy of this group has also been reviewed. There are 35 species of sessile rotifers from three families Atrochidae, Collothecidae, and Flosculariidae, but to that four more species in the planktonic family Conochilidae may be added, as recent molecular research indicates that this family lies within Flosculariidae. -

Biodiversity Summary for NRM Regions Species List What is the summary for and where does it come from? This list has been produced by the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities (SEWPC) for the Natural Resource Management Spatial Information System. The list was produced using the AustralianAustralian Natural Natural Heritage Heritage Assessment Assessment Tool Tool (ANHAT), which analyses data from a range of plant and animal surveys and collections from across Australia to automatically generate a report for each NRM region. Data sources (Appendix 2) include national and state herbaria, museums, state governments, CSIRO, Birds Australia and a range of surveys conducted by or for DEWHA. For each family of plant and animal covered by ANHAT (Appendix 1), this document gives the number of species in the country and how many of them are found in the region. It also identifies species listed as Vulnerable, Critically Endangered, Endangered or Conservation Dependent under the EPBC Act. A biodiversity summary for this region is also available. Suggested local native plant species for Superb Fairy-wren habitat Extract from the report, Superb Fairy-Wren Habitat in Glebe and Forest Lodge, S. Stevens, The Glebe Society, Sydney, 2008. The plants listed are thought to have been indigenous to inner-western Sydney prior to white settlement. Emphasis in this list is on plants that should be fairly easily obtainable, but a few that may be difficult to obtain at present, such as Epacrids and some Peas, and plants such as Epacrids have traditionally been difficult to propagate, have been included to indicate the variety of plants that are suitable for Superb Fairy-wren habitat, and with a view that these plant species may be available in the future. Indeed, highlighting them as suitable small bird habitat may influence some nurseries to add them to their stocklists.
