Hartmann, Ph.D. COMIC BOOK FANDOM AND STIGMA CONSCIOUSNESS Dennis Gagliardo, M.A. Western Michigan University, 2013 This research project explores the concept of stigma consciousness as applied to the subculture of comic book fandom. Integrating the disciplines of social psychology and cultural studies, this study examines the dynamic and socially constructed nature of the stigma process as applied to the specific cultural form of the American comic book, while identifying and measuring several variables of potential influence on perceptions of the hierarchy of American cultural values. The purpose is to address an existing gap in the academic literature of fan studies in regards to the marginalization and stigmatization of fan cultures as experienced by the members of these groups. Through the use of a questionnaire modeled on pre-existing studies in the realm of stigma research, members of the comic book fandom subculture communicate aspects of their experiences and perceptions related to their social identity as comic book fans. At its core, this project calls into question many of the claims made in the area of fandom studies and can potentially shape direction in the dialogue on the role of contemporary fandom in the social construction of identity. Fandom studies is primarily concerned with the social groups and phenomena that are linked to cultural and social objects, ranging from celebrities and athletes to media texts and material objects. As an academic discipline contributing to society’s body of knowledge, it explores how communities of readers and audiences are formed, how these communities construct meaning from media texts, what types of meanings they construct, the practices and activities of fandom, fandom groups as unique subcultures, the concepts of ideology and taste hierarchy as they manifest themselves in popular culture, and fandom groups’ positions and functions in the social world. In short, “the academic exploration of fandom explores the role of fandom as a social and cultural institution forming interpretive communities socially contextualizing the power of mass media” (Sandvoss, 2005, p. 10). A common theme that permeates fandom studies in general, regardless of what the specific avenue of research focus may be, is the idea that dominant social norms marginalize, devalue, or even stigmatize fandom groups and subcultures. The premise being that these fandom groups invert the traditionally dominant ideology of cultural hierarchy by placing high levels of value on cultural objects and practices generally designated as lowbrow and therefore they become

    2 The Cultural Economy of Fandom JOHN FISKE Fandom is a common feature of popular culture in industrial societies. It selects from the repertoire of mass-produced and mass-distributed entertainment certain performers, narratives or genres and takes them into the culture of a self-selected fraction of the people. They are then reworked into an intensely pleasurable, intensely signifying popular culture that is both similar to, yet significantly different from, the culture of more ‘normal’ popular audiences. Fandom is typically associated with cultural forms that the dominant value system denigrates – pop music, romance novels, comics, Hollywood mass-appeal stars (sport, probably because of its appeal to masculinity, is an exception). It is thus associated with the cultural tastes of subordinated formations of the people, particularly with those disempowered by any combination of gender, age, class and race. All popular audiences engage in varying degrees of semiotic productivity, producing meanings and pleasures that pertain to their social situation out of the products of the culture industries. But fans often turn this semiotic productivity into some form of textual production that can circulate among – and thus help to define – the fan community. Fans create a fan culture with its own systems of production and distribution that forms what I shall call a ‘shadow cultural economy’ that lies outside that of the cultural industries yet shares features with them which more normal popular culture lacks. The paper aims at investigating the relationships between the text and the image and their implications in the process of translation. It reflects on the status of the translation of comics/graphic novels - a still largely unexp loited area within Translation Studies and briefly presents a definition and specificity of the genre. Moreover, it discusses Jakobson’s (1971) tripartite distinction into interlinguistic, intralinguistic and intersemiotic translation. The paper concludes with the analysis of certain issues associated with the Polish translation of V like Vendetta by Alan Moore, a text that is copious with intertextual and cultural references. Keywords: graphic novel, comics, V like Vendetta , Jakobson, constrained translat ion, intertextuality Introduction The translation of comic books still occupies a rather unexploited area within the discipline of Translation Studies, maybe due to the fact that it “might be perceived as a field of l esser interest” (Zanettin 273) and comics are usually regarded as an artistic form of a lower status. In Dictionary of Translation Studies by Shuttleworth and Cowie there is no t a single entry on comics. They refer to them only when they explain the term “multi - medial texts” ( 109 - 1 10) as: “ .     Alternate Universe Fan Videos and the Reinterpretation of the Media Source Introduction According to the Francesca Coppa, American scholar and co-founder of the Organization for Transformative Works1, fan videos are “a form of grassroots filmmaking in which clips from television shows and movies are set to music.”2 Fan videos are commonly referred to as: fanvid, songvid, vid, AMV (for Anime Music Video); their process of creation is called vidding and their editors (fan)vidders. While the “media tradition” described above in Francesca Coppa‟s definition is a crucial part of the fan video production, many other fan videos are created for anime, especially Asian ones (AMV), for video games (some of them called Machinima), or even for other subjects, from band tributes to other types of remix. The vidding tradition – in its current “shape” – goes back to the era of the first VCR; but the very first fan videos may be traced back to the seventies in a slideshow format. When channel mixers and numerous machines available to a large group of consumers emerged, this fan activity easily became an expanding one amongst the fan communities, who were often interested in new technology, whatever era it is. Vidding has now become a digital process, thanks to the expansion of computer and related technical means, including at least semiprofessional editing software. It seems relevant to point out how rare it is that a vidder goes through editing training when they begin to create fan videos, or even become a professional editor later on. Of course, exceptions exist, but vidding generally remains a hobby.

The great comic book artist, Will Eisner, defined the comic as a form of “sequential art.”1 Indeed, the narrative use of a series of images is as old as art itself: Cave paintings, Egyptian hieroglyphics, and medieval tapestries are all precursors to the comic book. Yet comics and controversy have been linked from the very start: Founder of the Protestant movement, Martin Luther, was an early target of editorial cartoons (well, engravings anyway); his critics created caricatures of him as a tool of the devil2 (so in a sense, Spider-Man can trace his origins, not just from a radioactive spider, but also from the Reformation). With the advent of the printing press and the proliferation of newspapers and broadsheets, satirical political cartoons soon began to appear. By the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, editorial cartoons were a staple in the newspapers of the day. Benjamin Franklin’s famous “Join, or Die” is acknowledged as the first political cartoon in America, and served to galvanize support for colonial unity. In 1837 the first graphic novel was published by Swiss cartoonist Rudolphe Töpffer and was serialized in the American newspapers as “The Adventures of Mr. Obadiah Oldbuck.”3 Although conspicuously missing our now-familiar word balloons and sound effects, the comic book panel 1 Comics & Sequential Art.
