"The Planning Committee is convinced that Rollins College occupies a unique position among institutions of higher education today. We have the unusual combination of a distinguished history, important natural advantages, and a wealth of untapped potential With any luck, the next five years could produce a stunning achievement in institutional advancement From all the discussions, interviews, conversations, and surveys the Planning Committee have conducted, nothing emerges so clearly as the perception that Rollins is ready to move forward. And, as Hamlet said, "The readiness is all"' The Rollins College Planning Committee Report Received by the Board of Trustees, 1980

Summer 1981 Alumni Record 3 and a broad range of experience which will enrich our programs for years to come. At the same time, I must recognize the continuing fine performance that people like Tom Wells '59, Director of Physi- cal Plant, and Bill Gailey '80, Comptroller — and their staff members — provide to the College. The financial picture for 1981-82 is tighter. As interest rates decline — and that is essential to a secure economy — the fact is that interest payments on endowment funds and invested cash will also diminish. This reduces income for the College which must be made up through alumni and friends of the College. The biggest challenge facing Rollins financially is the current lack of breathing room. The budget is balanced, but precious little room exists for unanticipated emergencies. There are no reserve funds for unforeseen contingencies, and that is a precarious position for any organization, business or college. The names listed in this Annual Report represent more than a million dollars in unre- stricted and restricted giving. These gifts make up a critical portion of our $14 million budget. Without it, the College could not operate. With it, the College can continue to provide a fine liberal arts program for its students.

Alumni Annual Fund Volunteers The heart of a good development program is nearly always a sound and productive Alumni Annual Fund, centered upon recurrent giving by alumni. The success of the Alumni Annual Fund for Fiscal Year '81 is directly attributed to the work of two volunteer groups: the Alumni/College Agents and the Special Club Membership Task Force.

Summer 1981 Alumni Record 11 Parents Association

In a very real sense there is no greater endorsement of the College's program than a gift from the parents of a student. Rollins benefits greatly from the active support of parents who value the kinds of educational C.E. Meyer, Jr. experiences and opportunities for personal growth which the College Chairman, provides. There is a true story of a person presenting the needs and Parents Advisory opportunities of another institution to a foundation official. That official Committee; interrupted the set speech to ask quietly, "Would you want your own son to President, TWA go there?" The applicant hesitated. And the institution did not get the desired foundation contribution. For all those parents who stand proudly with Rollins, the faculty and alumni are grateful. One of our greatest assets is Mrs. Walter W. Kuhn, Jr. the "Family" tradition which binds together the generations of Rollins Mr. & Mrs. Edward J. Kusel College. Mr. & Mrs. Leon J. 18 Alumni Record Summer 1981 Deferred Gifts and Bequests

It has been said that one can make money by giving it away. Sound too good to be true? It really can happen because of various tax breaks Uncle Sam offers to encourage us to help the tax-exempt institutions like Rollins we would like to support. How does it work? Gifts which pay you or other beneficiaries a life-time income can be funded in cash, of course, but often it is even more advantageous to use long- term, appreciated property like securities, real estate, or even a valuable pewter or stamp collection. You obtain a charitable deduction to lower your income tax, avoid capital gains tax, and increase your income when you use stock paying low dividends or illiquid assets to fund the gift. You also remove assets from your taxable estate and under some of the plans can transfer funds to others while avoiding gift tax implications. Attractive as these features are, the primary reason for making such gifts to Rollins is a desire to preserve the high-quality private education it offers for future generations of students.

Deferred Gifts $398,427 During 1980-81 Rollins was named beneficiary of various irrevocable agreements from which the donors retained income for themselves or others and derived the advantages mentioned above. Ultimately, when the College's obligation to pay income ceases, these gifts will help to build our endowment. In effect, each donor gave the vine, but kept the fruit His or her right to income will continue for life, while Rollins' access to the principal is postponed to a future time, hence the name - deferred giving. The College's deferred giving program was adopted by the Board of Trustees and is under the overall supervision of a volunteer committee. Members of the Taxwise Giving Committee include Marion Haddad Brown '73, certified public accountant; Christopher Clanton '68, bank vice president and trust officer; Sara Harbottle Howden '35, Dean Emeritus of Women; Warren C. Hume '39, Rollins Trustee and business executive; Michael L. Marlowe '65, recent president of Rollins Alumni Association and attorney; Harold A. Ward, III, Rollins Trustee and attorney. Elizabeth Brothers, Associate Vice President for Development of Rollins, staffs the Committee.

Bequests $64,946 During 1980-81, Rollins was the grateful recipient of several legacies from the following generous and far-sighted alumni and friends:

Estate of Lennox L. Allen '36 Estate of Betty Trevor Fernbach '36 Estate of Edwin A. McQuaters '17 ♦Estate of Helen E. McQuaters Estate of John G. McKay '37 Estate of Helen Steinmetz '08

National Alumni Directory To Be Published

The Rollins Alumni Association has responded to numerous inquiries by authorizing the preparation of a directory of alumni. Rollins' last alumni directory was done over eight years ago. This new directory will be a valuable reference volume to alumni, and it will be helpful on campus in planning alumni activities and programs. The Bernard C. Harris Publishing Company, Inc., has been selected as the official publisher after a thorough review of this firm's extensive experience and success. Recognized as the oldest and largest exclusive publisher of alumni directories, they have completed over the past two decades alumni directories for more than 350 colleges and universities. The project will be undertaken at virtually no cost to the Alumni Association. The Harris Company has contracted to compile, publish, and market the directory, financing the operation solely through the sale of individual directory copies to alumni only. Neither the college nor the Alumni Association will benefit financially from the directory sales (purchases should not be considered as a contribution), but will derive substantial benefit from the completely updated records and other valuable information obtained. The main body of the directory will consist of an alphabetical listing of alumni, with each entry to include name, class, degree(s), home address and telephone, and business or professional information, including title, firm name and address, and telephone. Two complete indexes of alumni, one arranged geographically by towns within states and the other by class year, will follow the main listings, providing ready references and cross references. Updated material will be derived from brief questionnaires mailed to alumni this Fall and followed up by telephone for verification of information to be included in the directory. At that time only, alumni will be invited to purchase a copy of the directory. Only enough directories to fill these pre-publication orders will be printed, and circulation will be restricted to alumni. Release of the directory is tentatively scheduled for Spring 1982.

REUNION '82

Jubilee Celebration March 26, 27, 28

eunion'82 promises to be the most exciting ever, as the Rollins community joins in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the dedication of the Annie Russell Theatre and of the Knowles Memorial Chapel. You won't want to miss the very special events that are being planned for alumni, so make plans now to be a part of our Jubilee Celebration. Alumni of the theatre, choir and Chapel staff are especially encouraged to attend.

Attention all former Rollins Thespians: As part of the Jubilee Celebration, the Annie Russell Theatre is planning an all-alumni production of G.B. Shaw's "Major Barbara". Annie Russell, director of the theatre from 19:31-1936, originated the title role in the initial performance of this play in London 1905. It is planned that the play be designed, directed and performed entirely by past Rollins Thespians. Performance dates are scheduled for March 25, 26, 27 and April 1, 2, 3, 1982. It is hoped that the play can be staged in about ten days time. Dr. Robert Juergens will coordinate the project. Anyone interested in participating should address inquiries to him at the Annie Russell Theatre, Box 2735, Rollins College, Winter Park, Florida 32789.
