Paulin Hakizimana was just seven years old when he became an orphan. The war between tribal factions in his home country of Rwanda took first his father—who was shot—and, a year later, his mother, who died of disease in a Congoan refugee camp. Against all odds, the young man not only thrived despite extreme personal hardships, but excelled to be among only 50 students in the entire country selected to receive the Rwanda Presidential Scholarship to go to college abroad.

Hakizimana is now studying civil engineering at CBU as one of ten Rwandan students who are enrolled in engineering in baccalaureate degree programs, along with one other who is enrolled in the biology program. The Rwandan students , led by Patrick Nsengiyumva, organized a series of events on campus in April that brought together other CBU students, faculty, and community members to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the tragic events that resulted in the murders of an estimated one million people in 100 days.

“We work to bring awareness and education Paul Rudatsikira lost family members to the genocide in each April, so that this never happens again,” Rwanda, but emigrated to the U.S. with members of his nuclear Hakizimana said at a commemorative event held in family. On April 6, the students staffed an informational booth in the Stamps Courtyard throughout the school day. The following evening, they hosted a movie screening about the genocide, and hosted fellow Rwanda native Paul Rudatsikira as the keynote speaker.

Paul Rudatsikira, of similar age, moved to the U.S. at the age of nine years old, his family having taken refuge in neighboring Burundi during the genocide. Almost denied a visa to enter the country, Rudatsikira’s family prevailed and has established a ministry in the U.S., which includes the young man’s travel to share the Gospel and to speak about the horrors of the genocide.

Board of Visitors adopts softball field lighting project

When Ted Stream was asked to consider chairing the Board of Visitors, CBU’s business development and leadership group, for the 2008-2010 term, he agreed to do so only if the University would allow the BOV to take on a project that would add “permanent value” to the University. Stream, a partner in the Gresham, Savage, Nolan & Tilden law firm in the Inland Empire, explained that he found great value in attending Board of Visitors events at CBU, but wanted the opportunity to “give back.” [See video of Ted Stream’s comments: http://www.vimeo.com/5379533]
