Friends of Classic London Buses of the Fifties For those actively involved in or supporting the preservation of London buses, coaches and trolleybuses of the past Here is a nice wintry shot of RT 1426, one of the Country area's Cravens-bodied examples, waiting to go to home to Windsor from Uxbridge, long ago, via the picturesque-sounding Iver Heath, George Green, Upton Lea and more mundane Wexham Road, Slough and Eton. I cannot speak for those places at the time the photograph was taken, but in more recent times it has been hard to see anything remotely rural, bucolic or delightful about any of them, and Upton Lea is nothing but a large and uninspiring housing estate on the edge of Slough. Life can be so disappointing at times! Photo by Michael Dryhurst. Newsletter 162 February 2020 Opening Lines First of all, many thanks to all those “Friends” who kindly sent us seasonal greetings at what is nowadays regarded as the “festive” season. These are of course warmly reciprocated. Thanks also to those many individuals who contribute to this monthly mayhem. All contributions are gratefully received and as many as possible are used. It matters not if you send a couple of lines or several pages, it all helps to keep us all in touch. I would also now ask vehicle owners to think about keeping us posted, especially in the case of those buses and coaches which rarely, if ever, appear in public. Many members like to know that these “ghost” buses still exist and are being cared for, or stored, or even under extensive restoration.

2020 Book News Welcome to our 2020 Book News. It’s hard to believe another year has gone by already and what a challenging year it’s been on many fronts. We finally got the Hallmark book launched at Showbus. The Red & White volume is now out on final proof and we hope to have copies available in time for Santa to drop under your tree this Christmas. Sorry this has taken so long but there have been many hurdles to overcome and it’s been a much bigger project than we had anticipated. Several other long term projects that have been stuck behind Red & White are now close to release and you’ll see details of these on the next couple of pages. Whilst mentioning bigger projects and hurdles to overcome, thank you to everyone who has supported my latest charity fund raiser in aid of the Christie Hospital. The Walk for Life challenge saw me trekking across Greater Manchester to 11 cricket grounds, covering over 160 miles in all weathers, and has so far raised almost £6,000 for the Christie. You can read more about this by clicking on the Christie logo on the website or visiting my Just Giving page www.justgiving.com/fundraising/mark-senior-sue-at-60 Please note our new FREEPOST address is shown below, it’s just: FREEPOST MDS BOOK SALES You don’t need to add anything else, there’s no need for a street name or post code. In fact, if you do add something, it will delay the letter or could even mean we don’t get it.

Graham of Manchester, who constructed and operated a ¾-mile horse drawn line between Cornhill in the town centre, via Princes Street, to the Great Eastern Railway station. The tramway was built to a gauge of 3ft 6ins and opened for business on the 13th October 1880. Three single-deck Starbuck-built cars formed the initial fleet, working from a depot in Quadling Street about ¼-mile from the station. Later in the year a branch line to Brooks Hall, via Portman Road and Norwich Road, was opened.

Phil Argent Welcome to TM257 which introduces our new Hon Secretary (from September), Peter Berry, to you all. Peter has also contributed an interesting article of a recent visit to Ketton in Rutland for this issue … it is the very thing that makes TM unique, the sharing of our transport interests and experiences. I would remind you all (as always) that TM is YOUR magazine and it is YOUR contributions that make it what it is! Whilst it may be an Editor’s ‘dream’ to receive highly polished authoritive, complete articles, equally welcome are YOUR suggested ideas and even the odd photograph (transport related) for inclusion in the future editions … it all counts to making TM a more interesting publication! With this issue is all the AGM gen required for our new season which begins on Wednesday 27 September where I look forward to meeting up with you all again … especially those of you with ideas regarding TM.
