The Playlist: the 1975, Panic! at the Disco, & Yellowcard August 29, 2013 by Kim Conway
The Playlist: The 1975, Panic! At The Disco, & Yellowcard August 29, 2013 By Kim Conway It’s not over yet, kids. We’ve still got a few days left of glorious summer (and August, for that matter). Before I start looking for new sweater-weather tunes, I want to wind down with three more sun- soaked ones. These artists all made my soundtrack to summer possible and I look forward to hearing new albums from some of them this fall. Our last summer jam session starts now: 1. The 1975 - Chocolate The 1975 have been around a while, but I only just discovered them on a hunt for a new alt-rock band to get hooked on. The first time I heard “Chocolate,” I fell in love with the guitar plucking along behind the accented vocals. It’s a little pop, a little indie, and a little alt-rock. While I still have yet to learn more than a few lyrics, this track scores for me in that it’s got a catchy melody and verses that keep me guessing. The 1975’s self-titled album comes out next Tuesday, September 3rd. 2. Panic! At The Disco – This Is Gospel Their album drop is still nearly two months away and I’m ridiculously addicted to the second track released from it. “This Is Gospel” opens with Brendon’s vocals accompanied by a heartbeat, then slowly picks up with a more solid rhythm. At the 0:36-second mark, the beat stops as Brendon screams, if you love me, let me go and the instrumental rushes back in. -
Béla Fleck & Abigail Washburn
BÉLA FLECK & ABIGAIL WASHBURN ADELAIDE TOWN HALL 12 AUGUST 8PM USA ADELAIDE PREMIERE 16 - time Grammy winner Béla Fleck and his critically lauded partner Abigail Washburn bring together, in a seemingly mystical union, Fleck’s revered modern compositions for banjo with Washburn’s equally respected old-school take on the instrument. Their 2014 debut duo album revealed new musical possibilities found in their combined styles, heralded by Washburn’s angelic voice. The triumph of their collaboration was recognised when the record won the 2016 Grammy Award for Best Folk Album. “A stunning collection of eloquent duets” – THE NEW YORKER “the couple has mined various intimate intricacies of the banjo duet, using an aesthetic of front-porch minimalism to play an eclectic mix of country blues, Appalachian mountain songs and expansive chamber folk…. The duo's eponymous debut is filled with understated force” – WASHINGTON POST “two monsters of the banjo” – NPR All Things Considered BÉLA FLECK & ABIGAIL WASHBURN Sure, in the abstract, a banjo duo might seem like a musical concept beset by limitations. But when the banjo players cast in those roles are Abigail Washburn and Béla Fleck—she with the earthy sophistication of a postmodern, old-time singer-songwriter, he with the virtuosic, jazz-to-classical ingenuity of an iconic instrumentalist and composer with bluegrass roots— it’s a different matter entirely. There’s no denying that theirs is a one-of-a-kind pairing, with one-of- a-kind possibilities. Fleck and Washburn have collaborated in the past, most visibly in their Sparrow Quartet with Casey Driessen and Ben Sollee. -

ANDREW HURLEY Billy Ramirez Drummers Making a Difference from the GRAVE to the CORK TREE
14.5_39-40.qxp 4/11/05 10:38 AM Page 39 by VibeVVibeViibbee ANDREW HURLEY Billy Ramirez Drummers Making A Difference FROM THE GRAVE TO THE CORK TREE ook reports, gym class, stale lunch, and driver’s ed are all still fresh in the memories Bof the members of Fall Out Boy. The Boy was born just a few years ago while bassist Pete Wentz, vocalist Patrick Stump, and guitarist Joe Trohman were in high school in Chicago. They recruited their buddy Andrew Hurley to man the drums, and the quartet quickly recorded a demo (a joint CD with Project Rocket), and released their first full-length record Take This To Your Grave on the Fueled By Ramen label. At their age, it’s a good bet Top Ramen is their source of fuel. Hurley, one of the band’s elder statesmen at 24 years old, joined after Fall Out Boy unsuccessfully auditioned a series of drummers. “I was in college, going full-time, and we were playing local shows. That was about the time we started talking to labels, and interest started growing, and it totally took off very fast,” Hurley says with an innocent voice that befits his calm, bespectacled face, but belies his tattooed arms and intense playing. “We were writing and recording Take This To Your Grave when I was still in school full time. I’d be going down from Milwaukee, which is an hour and a half away, so I’d be driving there and back everyday to go to school, and then I’d go do pre-production for the record.
