  • Citation Analysis for the Modern Instructor: an Integrated Review of Emerging Research
CITATION ANALYSIS FOR THE MODERN INSTRUCTOR: AN INTEGRATED REVIEW OF EMERGING RESEARCH Chris Piotrowski University of West Florida USA Abstract While online instructors may be versed in conducting e-Research (Hung, 2012; Thelwall, 2009), today’s faculty are probably less familiarized with the rapidly advancing fields of bibliometrics and informetrics. One key feature of research in these areas is Citation Analysis, a rather intricate operational feature available in modern indexes such as Web of Science, Scopus, Google Scholar, and PsycINFO. This paper reviews the recent extant research on bibliometrics within the context of citation analysis. Particular focus is on empirical studies, review essays, and critical commentaries on citation-based metrics across interdisciplinary academic areas. Research that relates to the interface between citation analysis and applications in higher education is discussed. Some of the attributes and limitations of citation operations of contemporary databases that offer citation searching or cited reference data are presented. This review concludes that: a) citation-based results can vary largely and contingent on academic discipline or specialty area, b) databases, that offer citation options, rely on idiosyncratic methods, coverage, and transparency of functions, c) despite initial concerns, research from open access journals is being cited in traditional periodicals, and d) the field of bibliometrics is rather perplex with regard to functionality and research is advancing at an exponential pace. Based on these findings, online instructors would be well served to stay abreast of developments in the field. Keywords: Bibliometrics, informetrics, citation analysis, information technology, Open resource and electronic journals INTRODUCTION In an ever increasing manner, the educational field is irreparably linked to advances in information technology (Plomp, 2013).

  • How Can Citation Impact in Bibliometrics Be Normalized?
RESEARCH ARTICLE How can citation impact in bibliometrics be normalized? A new approach combining citing-side normalization and citation percentiles an open access journal Lutz Bornmann Division for Science and Innovation Studies, Administrative Headquarters of the Max Planck Society, Hofgartenstr. 8, 80539 Munich, Germany Downloaded from http://direct.mit.edu/qss/article-pdf/1/4/1553/1871000/qss_a_00089.pdf by guest on 01 October 2021 Keywords: bibliometrics, citation analysis, citation percentiles, citing-side normalization Citation: Bornmann, L. (2020). How can citation impact in bibliometrics be normalized? A new approach ABSTRACT combining citing-side normalization and citation percentiles. Quantitative Since the 1980s, many different methods have been proposed to field-normalize citations. In this Science Studies, 1(4), 1553–1569. https://doi.org/10.1162/qss_a_00089 study, an approach is introduced that combines two previously introduced methods: citing-side DOI: normalization and citation percentiles. The advantage of combining two methods is that their https://doi.org/10.1162/qss_a_00089 advantages can be integrated in one solution. Based on citing-side normalization, each citation Received: 8 May 2020 is field weighted and, therefore, contextualized in its field. The most important advantage of Accepted: 30 July 2020 citing-side normalization is that it is not necessary to work with a specific field categorization scheme for the normalization procedure. The disadvantages of citing-side normalization—the Corresponding Author: Lutz Bornmann calculation is complex and the numbers are elusive—can be compensated for by calculating [email protected] percentiles based on weighted citations that result from citing-side normalization. On the one Handling Editor: hand, percentiles are easy to understand: They are the percentage of papers published in the Ludo Waltman same year with a lower citation impact.

The virology journals and their 2010 journal impact factors were retrieved from Journal Citation Reports. The h-index and the g-index values of the journals for 2007-2011 were obtained from Web of Science and Google Scholar. The journals were ranked by their journal impact factor and h-indices. The correlation analysis of the measures found a strong relationship between the journal impact factor and the h-type indices, and a stronger tie between the h-indices themselves. Despite the strong correlations between the measures, differences in rankings of the journals with the journal impact factor and the h-type indices were found, and possible explanations for the differences were provided.

Original Article Virology research in a Latin American developing country: a bibliometric analysis of virology in Colombia (2000–2013) Julian Ruiz-Saenz1,3, Marlen Martinez-Gutierrez1,2,3 1 Grupo de Investigación en Ciencias Animales-GRICA, Facultad de Medicina Veterinaria y Zootecnia, Universidad Cooperativa de Colombia, Bucaramanga, Colombia 2 Grupo de Investigación Infettare, Facultad de Medicina, Universidad Cooperativa de Colombia, Medellín, Colombia 3 Asociación Colombiana de Virología, Bogotá, Colombia Abstract Introduction: Bibliometric analysis demonstrates that the virology research in Latin America has increased. For this reason, the objective of this study was to evaluate Colombian publications on viruses and viral diseases in indexed journals during the period from 2000 to 2013. Methodology: The bibliographic data were collected from MedLine, SciELO, LILACS and Scopus databases. The database was constructed in Excel descriptive statistics. The SCImago Journal Rank (SJR) was evaluated using the SCImago Journal & Country Rank in 2013 and was used as an indicator of the quality of the journals used by the Colombian researchers. Results: The total number of papers published was 711, of which 40.4% were published in local journals, and 59.6% were published in foreign journals. Most (89.2%) were original papers. Moreover, 34.2% of the papers were published in collaboration with international researchers, with the United States being the most represented. Of the journals used, 85.6% had an SJR, and 14.4% did not. The median SJR of the papers was 0.789, and the median of the papers with international collaborators was higher compared to the SJR of the papers without international collaboration.

The connection, if any, between the use of copper in these two adjacent regions is, at present, unclear. The ability to determine the source of native copper artifacts found in greater northwestern North America would inform on the movement of copper via trade and exchange between, and aid in understanding the innovation and diffusion of native copper metallurgy among, ancestral Dene and Inuit People. This paper provides the results of a Lead Isotope Analysis (LIA) pilot study examining Pb isotope ratios of native copper samples from multiple locations in the northern regions of North America. The results from this preliminary study indicate some overlap in Pb isotope ratios between Arctic and Subarctic sources of native copper, and these nonetheless record distinct isotope signatures relative to those associated with other North American native Cu deposits. • Data Journals: Incentivizing Data Access and Documentation Within the Scholarly Communication System
Insights – 33, 2020 Data journals: incentivizing data access and documentation | William H Walters Data journals: incentivizing data access and documentation within the scholarly communication system Data journals provide strong incentives for data creators to verify, document and disseminate their data. They also bring data access and documentation into the mainstream of scholarly communication, rewarding data creators through existing mechanisms of peer-reviewed publication and citation tracking. These same advantages are not generally associated with data repositories, or with conventional journals’ data-sharing mandates. This article describes the unique advantages of data journals. It also examines the data journal landscape, presenting the characteristics of 13 data journals in the fields of biology, environmental science, chemistry, medicine and health sciences. These journals vary considerably in size, scope, publisher characteristics, length of data reports, data hosting policies, time from submission to first decision, article processing charges, bibliographic index coverage and citation impact. They are similar, however, in their peer review criteria, their open access license terms and the characteristics of their editorial boards. Keywords data journals; data repositories; incentives; open access; open data Introduction The benefits of free, unmediated access to research data are widely acknowledged, especially in the life sciences. Despite mandates from both funding agencies and publishers, however, open data initiatives

Organic Geochemistry serves as the only dedicated medium for the publication of peer-reviewed research on all phases of geochemistry in which organic compounds play a major role. The Editors welcome contributions covering a wide spectrum of subjects in the geosciences broadly based on organic chemistry (including molecular and isotopic geochemistry), and involving geology, biogeochemistry, environmental geochemistry, chemical oceanography and hydrology. The scope of the journal includes research involving petroleum (including natural gas), coal, organic matter in the aqueous environment and recent sediments, organic-rich rocks and soils and the role of organics in the geochemical cycling of the elements. Sedimentological, paleontological and organic petrographic studies will also be considered for publication, provided that they are geochemically oriented. Papers cover the full range of research activities in organic geochemistry, and include comprehensive review articles, technical communications, discussion/reply correspondence and short technical notes. Peer-reviews organised through three Chief Editors and a staff of Associate Editors, are conducted by well known, respected scientists from academia, government and industry. The journal also publishes reviews of books, announcements of important conferences and meetings and other matters of direct interest to the organic geochemical community. AUDIENCE . Organic geochemists, geologists, petroleum geologists, oceanographers, biogeochemists, organic petrologists and environmental scientists.
