The Pinion, Volume 21 Issue 1 Newsletter of Dear Parents: Paul VI High School From the Principal I once saw an advertisement for a book for parents; it read:

What job runs 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, offers no vacation or retirement plan and yields rewards beyond those of any other job? Parenting. From the terrible twos to the tricky August 2021 teens and beyond, parenting is a stretch of tough, spiritually wearing work...All you need is strong faith to guide you, strong morals to impart to your children, and the strength of your convictions to maintain discipline in your home.

When I finished reading the above, I smiled and thought of all of you who do not have the time to write that book of advice, but who probably have plenty of stories to tell and advice to go with them. Many of our Paul VI parents are already veterans in raising teenagers. Others of you are in the high school teenage years for the first time. But no matter how old your children are, you do need the guidance of your Catholic faith to fix a strong moral compass. We look forward to working with you as partners this year in the formation of your student both spiritually and academically.

The opening of school this year will require that the students wear masks. It may seem disappointing to some, but we know from last year’s experiences that we have the tools and determination to have an enjoyable and successful year. It does help everyone’s peace of mind to know that so many who attend Paul VI are fully vaccinated. Your cooperation in uploading the vaccination card in your stu- dent’s Magnus Health record will prove invaluable to us as we go forward. Students who are vaccinat- ed and have their vaccination card in Magnus Health will not have to quarantine if they are exposed to a positive case. The vaccination record will also be helpful to students who chose to travel or attend field trips with the school.

Let us also remember to encourage your student to belong to a club, a team, or attend an activity. The four high school years go by too quickly and activities and events create invaluable memories. The following statement is from an essay from a student who graduated:

“Every morning I take a long 45 minute drive to school, with my hot cup of coffee and my to-go break- fast sitting right next to me. I could’ve chosen a closer school to attend; one that would give me a good extra hour of sleep in the morning, but I chose Paul VI High School. My freshman year I knew I made the right choice and remembering what many of my older friends had advised me to do, I joined nu- merous clubs…The best advice ever given to me about high school was to get involved. You only have four years to experience high school and what better way than to be a part of as many activities your school has to offer? High school is the time to experience, learn and lead in anything you want, whether it’s in sports, clubs or other outside service activities. And that is exactly what I did.”

We, the Paul VI faculty, and staff, are here to work together with you in the awesome job you have undertaken. For all of us, that strong faith guiding us is essential and should be one of the reasons we chose a Catholic high school. Let us pledge our support for our children in partnership with each other to provide the best education possible. We are committed to you and stand ready to help you in all ways with your teenage son or daughter.

Enjoy the remainder of summer. Sincerely,

Sr. Marianne McCann Principal OPENING DAYS of SCHOOL Tuesday, September 7th

National Honor Society

Just a reminder to gear up and get ready for the 2021-2022 school year with the National Honor Soci- ety.

The National Honor Society is a nationwide organization that upholds the principles of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. Students may not apply for membership in the National Honor Society. Members are selected by the NHS faculty council based on student attainment of the four ideals mentioned.

In order to get ready for this upcoming school year, the NHS selection process is as follows:

1. A preliminary list of potential inductees is derived from the junior and senior GPA list. Students will only be considered if they have a minimum GPA of 3.85 (no rounding). 2. After a discipline review of the candidates by the administration, eligible students will receive a letter in the mail giving them instructions on how to apply. Students will be evaluated and scored on the following required items:  Write a 300-350 word essay that describes the personal quality or trait that you possess which you value the most.  Student Service and Activity Forms; multiple activities and service is needed to be considered.  Service hours must be completed for both juniors and seniors. All appropriate documentation and signatures must be submitted on the application’s due date.  Ask three Paul VI teachers and one outside mentor to complete a recommendation form.

In order to be considered for membership all application forms must be returned by the due date with the appropriate documentations and signatures. Failure to return any part of the application on time may eliminate a candidate from being considered.

After the initial letters have been sent out, a letter will be sent to parents and guardians. This letter will inform them of their child’s nomination and requirements. Parents or guardians will be required to return this letter with a signature. Failure to return this letter may eliminate the nominee for consideration into the NHS. 3. A faculty council, comprised of five faculty members, appointed yearly by the principal, reviews the applications and selects the final list of candidates.

The final list of candidates is submitted to the principal. If you have any questions regarding the NHS selection process, please feel free to contact Ms. Hans-DaCruz at [email protected].

ImportantImportant InformationInformation for Parents/Guardians 20212021--20222022 iPads iPad Issues: If your student is having difficulties with their iPad or an app/product with the iPad they should see Mr. Markellos. First try his office by Room 200, if he is in class or not available, then schedule an appointment by emailing Mr. Markellos [email protected].

Network Issues: Each student was given an Active Directory (Network) Username/Password to login onto the web and connect to various network sources. If students are experiencing network connectivity issues, they should first check that they are connected to the “pvihs” wireless client. If they are connected and still experiencing issues, they should visit the Media Center and make an appointment with Tech Support.

Damaged iPads: If the iPad is dropped and cracks or breaks, then take it to Mr. Markellos immediately and get it evaluated. For most students this damage is covered for the deductible of $50, but for those students whose Apple Care lapse, they should still get the iPad evaluated to see what options are available at that time.

Stolen iPads: Students should use good judgment with the iPad and try not to leave behind in the classroom or in an unlocked locker. Most times the iPad is misplaced and can be easily located by the school server. If an iPad cannot be found using the server, then please report the iPad stolen to Mr. Jones in the Main Office.
