Network Notebook Fall Quarter 2018 (October - December) 1 A World of Services for Our Affiliates We make great radio as affordable as possible: • Our production costs are primarily covered by our arts partners and outside funding, not from our affiliates, marketing or sales. • Affiliation fees only apply when a station takes three or more programs. The actual affiliation fee is based on a station’s market share. Affiliates are not charged fees for the selection of WFMT Radio Network programs on the Public Radio Exchange (PRX). • The cost of our Beethoven and Jazz Network overnight services is based on a sliding scale, depending on the number of hours you use (the more hours you use, the lower the hourly rate). We also offer reduced Beethoven and Jazz Network rates for HD broadcast. Through PRX, you can schedule any hour of the Beethoven or Jazz Network throughout the day and the files are delivered a week in advance for maximum flexibility. We provide highly skilled technical support: • Programs are available through the Public Radio Exchange (PRX). PRX delivers files to you days in advance so you can schedule them for broadcast at your convenience. We provide technical support in conjunction with PRX to answer all your distribution questions. In cases of emergency or for use as an alternate distribution platform, we also offer an FTP (File Transfer Protocol), which is kept up to date with all of our series and specials. We keep you informed about our shows and help you promote them to your listeners: • Affiliates receive our quarterly Network Notebook with all our program offerings, and our regular online WFMT Radio Network Newsletter, with news updates, previews of upcoming shows and more. -

The Iwalewahaus mourns the loss of Georgina Beier, who died on July 11, 2021 in Sydney (Australia). In 1981 she and Ulli Beier founded the Iwalewahaus in Bayreuth as a meeting place for artists and works. Together they designed the profile of the house and gave it its programmatic name from the Yoruba: Iwalewa, character is beauty. Georgina Beier shaped both the content-related character of the house and its aesthetic orientation significantly - her ideas of artistic community and sensual access to art and culture determine the work of the Iwalewahaus to this day. Georgina Beier was on friendly terms with many colleagues and maintained close contact with the house until her death. The team of the Iwalewahaus as well as long-time friends and companions in Bayreuth and the world say goodbye in gratitude to Georgina Beier, an impressive painter, graphic artist and sculptor. Our deepest condolences go to her family. In her memory we share an obituary from our colleague Katharina Greven, who spent a lot of time with Georgina Beier as part of her research. Experience first-hand the environment of one of the largest Impressionist art colonies in America, including the Robert F. Schumann Artists’ Trail. This new addition to the Museum, opened in 2019, offers an opportunity to take in the natural, artistic, and historic highlights of our site via a half-mile, ADA-accessible pathway that links the fragments of the original Griswold estate for the first time since 1936. Inside this guide, you will find a detailed map with points of interest around the Museum and along the trail. Field Perspectives is an arts writing project organized by Common Field in collaboration with nine arts publishing organizations around the US. Field Perspectives publishes writing that considers the state of the artist organization field and the key ideas explored in the Common Field 2017 Los Angeles Convening. The nine 2017 Field Perspectives partners are Los Angeles publications Contemporary Art Review Los Angeles (CARLA), contemptorary, X-TRA; and national publications ARTS. BLACK (Detroit/New York), Art Practical (Bay Area), The Chart (Portland, ME), DIRT (DC, Maryland, Virginia (DMV) Area), Pelican Bomb (New Orleans), and Temporary Art Review (St. Loius). Commissioned writers include Chloë Bass, Dan Bustillo, Travis Diehl, Lucy Lopez, Lindsay Preston Zappas, Ellen Tani, Anuradha Vikram; Andrea Andersson, Imani Jacqueline Brown, L. Kasimu Harris, and Charlie Tatum; and a collaborative essay by Ani Bradberry, Martina Dodd, Andy Johnson, Jordan Martin & Ikram Lakhdhar, Georgie Payne, and Valerie Wiseman. Dorothea Lange 1934
Dorothea Lange 1934 Documentary photographer Dorothea Lange (1895–1965) is best known for her work during the 1930s with Roosevelt's Farm Security Administration (FSA). Born in New Jersey, Lange studied photography at Columbia University, then moved to San Francisco in 1919 earning a living as a successful portrait photographer. In 1935 in the midst of the Great Depression, Lange brought her large-format Graflex camera out of the studio and onto the streets. Her photos of the homeless and unemployed in San Francisco's breadlines, labor demonstrations, and soup kitchens led to a job with the FSA. From 1935 to 1939, Lange's arresting FSA images—drawing upon her strength as a portrait photographer—brought the plight of the nation's poor and forgotten peoples, especially sharecroppers, displaced families, and migrant workers, into the public eye. Her image "Migrant Mother" is arguably the best-known documentary photograph of the 20th century and has become a symbol of resilience in the face of adversity. Lange's reports from the field included not just photographs, but the words of the people with whom she'd spoken, quoted directly. "Somethin' is radical White Angel Breadline, 1933 wrong," one told her; another said, "I don't believe the President (Roosevelt) knows what's happening to us here." Lange also included her own observations. "They have built homes here out of nothing," she wrote, referring to the cardboard and plywood "Okievilles" scattered throughout California's Central Valley. "They have planted trees and flowers. These flimsy shacks represent many a last stand to maintain self-respect." At the age of seven Lange contracted polio, which left her right leg and foot noticeably weakened. -
