www.TLHjournal.com Literary Herald ISSN: 2454-3365 UGC-Approved Journal An International Refereed English e-Journal Impact Factor: 2.24 (IIJIF) Musical hide-and-seek: the predisposed Lennon-Salil Dr. Priyadarsee Chakraborty Assistant Professor in History Kulti College (Affiliated under Kazi Nazrul University) Paschim Bardhaman, West Bengal Abstract: The prelude of the paper concentrates on situating lyrics of the song as an extended part of literature and, consequently, places it as a valid source in reconstructing the past. At the next, the study would make an attempt to extract ideas and facts out of the lyrics of purely entertainment- oriented songs that neither has been authenticated by the composer himself in connection to specific historical coordinates nor can be placed in terms of their direct portrayal of contemporary socio-political milieu. A synthetic approach of analyzing tool can be exercised here by situating the dates of creations of them with known chronology of contemporary events. Kind of literary analysis also becomes imperative here. Application of such method would be done here by scrutinizing two musical pieces of same sort composed by Western rock master John Lennon and Indian musical genius Salil Chowdhury. Conclusion endeavours at seizing the psychological state of mind of both composers who got perplexed under vicious circle of ideological beliefs at one end and decent livelihood at the other. The dealt songs tend to represent exactly such crisis of identity. Key words: Music, Lyrics, Historicity, John Lennon, Salil Chowdhury, Crisis of Identity Preamble to the theme: In respect of more recent objective approach of analysis, literature, particularly the kind that has been blended with the creative intellect of the author, is a form of consciousness that reflects realities in artistic images embodying human mind‟s aesthetic attitude to it.

  • Playback Singers of Bollywood and Hollywood
ILLUSION AND REALITY: PLAYBACK SINGERS OF BOLLYWOOD AND HOLLYWOOD By MYRNA JUNE LAYTON Submitted in accordance with the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF LITERATURE AND PHILOSOPHY in the subject MUSICOLOGY at the UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH AFRICA. SUPERVISOR: PROF. M. DUBY JANUARY 2013 Student number: 4202027-1 I declare that ILLUSION AND REALITY: PLAYBACK SINGERS OF BOLLYWOOD AND HOLLYWOOD is my own work and that all the sources that I have used or quoted have been indicated and acknowledged by means of complete references. SIGNATURE DATE (MRS M LAYTON) Preface I would like to thank the two supervisors who worked with me at UNISA, Marie Jorritsma who got me started on my reading and writing, and Marc Duby, who saw me through to the end. Marni Nixon was most helpful to me, willing to talk with me and discuss her experiences recording songs for Hollywood studios. It was much more difficult to locate people who work in the Bollywood film industry, but two people were helpful and willing to talk to me; Craig Pruess and Deepa Nair have been very gracious about corresponding with me via email. Lastly, putting the whole document together, which seemed an overwhelming chore, was made much easier because of the expert formatting and editing of my daughter Nancy Heiss, sometimes assisted by her husband Andrew Heiss. Joe Bonyata, a good friend who also happens to be an editor and publisher, did a final read-through to look for small details I might have missed, and of course, he found plenty. For this I am grateful.

  • Hindustani Music[Edit] Carnatic Music[Edit]
The music of India includes multiple varieties of folk, popular, pop, classical music andR&B. India's classical music tradition, including Carnatic and Hindustani music, has a history spanning millennia and developed over several eras. Music in India began as an integral part of socio-religious life and that Indian music is essentially melodic: sounds follow one another expressing an emotional state in an aesthetic unity.[1] Two main traditions of classical music are Carnatic music, found predominantly in the peninsular regions, and Hindustani music, found in the northern and central regions.[2] The basic concepts of this music includes Shruti, Swara, Alankar, Rāga, and Tāla. Its tonal system divides the octave into 22 segments called shrutis, not all equal but each roughly equal to one quarter of a whole tone of Western music. Melody is based on the system of ragas, which are melody types used as the basis for improvisation. Hindustani music[edit] Main article: Hindustani classical music Hindustani music tradition was developed around 13th and 14th centuries AD with Persian influences and from existing religious and folk music.[3] The practice of singing based on notes was popular even from the Vedic times where the hymns in Sama Veda, a sacred text, were sung as Samagana and not chanted. Developing a strong and diverse tradition over several centuries, it has contemporary traditions established primarily in India but also in Pakistan and Bangladesh. In contrast to Carnatic music, the other main Indian classical music tradition originating from the South, Hindustani music was not only influenced by ancient Hindu musical traditions, historical Vedic philosophy and native Indian sounds but also enriched by the Persian performance practices of the Mughals.

  • Child-Directed Music As an Index of Cultural Change in Metropolitan India
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Passing Traditions: Child-Directed Music as an Index of Cultural Change in Metropolitan India A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Ethnomusicology by Andrew James Pettit 2014 © Copyright by Andrew James Pettit 2014 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Passing Traditions: Child-Directed Music as an Index of Cultural Change in Metropolitan India By Andrew James Pettit Doctor of Philosophy in Ethnomusicology University of California, Los Angeles, 2014 Professor Daniel M. Neuman, Chair This dissertation is one of the first forays into the living and evolving world of child- directed song practices in metropolitan India. It is an inquiry into how individuals living in India’s megacities of Delhi, Kolkata, and Mumbai sing to children, what these song practices mean for both children and adults, and why these practices are changing. It investigates the nature and effects of change on the intimate practice of lullaby singing and more the public, ritualized song practices known as sohars. A changing family structure, shifting gender roles, increasing economic mobility, rapid urbanization, and pervasive technology are irrevocably altering life and child-directed song practices in India’s megacities. In this work, I document the musical and textual features of some of the most prominent lullaby and sohar practices to show how they help transmit socio-cultural values, build connections between generations of people separated by time and place, and provide scaffolding for the creation, maintenance, and performance of an individual’s identities in the contexts of India’s fluid urban environments. My ii research primarily draws on ethnomusicological fieldwork conducted in India in 2011-2012, in addition to four research excursions in 2004-2010, to document how child-directed song practices help transmit and preserve traditions, mythologies, memories, and values while simultaneously creating new ways for individuals to interface with a changing world.
