Tribute to Kishore Kumar
Articles by Prince Rama Varma Tribute to Kishore Kumar As a child, I used to listen to a lot of Hindi film songs. As a middle aged man, I still do. The difference however, is that when I was a child I had no idea which song was sung by Mukesh, which song by Rafi, by Kishore and so on unlike these days when I can listen to a Kishore song I have never heard before and roughly pinpoint the year when he may have sung it as well as the actor who may have appeared on screen. On 13th October 1987, I heard that Kishore Kumar had passed away. In the evening there was a tribute to him on TV which was when I discovered that 85% of my favourite songs were sung by him. Like thousands of casual music lovers in our country, I used to be under the delusion that Kishore sang mostly funny songs, while Rafi sang romantic numbers, Mukesh, sad songs…and Manna Dey, classical songs. During the past twenty years, I have journeyed a lot, both in music as well as in life. And many of my childhood heroes have diminished in stature over the years. But a few…..a precious few….have grown……. steadily….and continue to grow, each time I am exposed to their brilliance. M.D.Ramanathan, Martina Navratilova, Bruce Lee, Swami Vivekananda, Kunchan Nambiar, to name a few…..and Kishore Kumar. I have had the privilege of studying classical music for more than two and a half decades from some truly phenomenal Gurus and I go around giving lecture demonstrations about how important it is for a singer to know an instrument and vice versa. -

Theoretical and Literary Spaces in Bangladesh Amitava
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Prometheus-Academic Collections The Marginalized in the Construction of ‘Indigenous’ Theoretical and Literary Spaces in Bangladesh Amitava CHAKRABORTY (Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, Japan) 1㸬 In the middle of the 80s of the last Century, Bengali culture witnessed the emergence of a literary and theoretical movement known as ‘Uttaradhunikatabad’1. The movement was initiated by poet and critic Amitabha Gupta, who in 1985 presented the concept in the little magazine Janapada. It was then nurtured by critics, literary theoreticians and litterateurs like Anjan Sen, Birendra Chakravarti, Uday Narayan Singha, Tapodhir Bhattacharjee etc. from India and Ezaz Yusufi, Sajidul Haq, Jillur Rahman and Khondakar Ashraf Hossain from Bangladesh. Little magazines from India and Bangladesh like Gangeya Patra, Beej, Alochanachakra, Samprata, Lalnakkhatra, Chatimtala, Sanket, Anyastar, Drastabya, Bipratik, Sudarshanchakra, 1400, Ekabingsho etc. nurtured the movement. When Gupta first proposed the concept, it was centered on a new trend in poetry, which Gupta identified as a move beyond modernist literary culture. Following years, however, saw the movement developing its’ unique corpus of theoretical postulations regarding poetry and other forms of literature, poetic language and ontology. Gupta’s article titled Nibedan, published as the appendix of an anthology of Uttaradhunik poems, titled Uttar Adhunik Kabita2, offers a comprehensive account of the theoretical understanding at its earliest phase. He posited the new movement against the Modernist 1 Uttar = Beyond, Adhunikatabad = Modernism. (Adhunik= Modern, Adhunikata= Modernity) Uttar is also used to mean ‘Post’ which has led many scholars and thinkers in translating this term as ‘Postmodernism’, whereas a few others have used the term Uttaradhunikatabad as one of the translations of the term ‘Postmodernism’. -

Echoing Tagore's Love for the Monsoons
ECHOING TAGORE’S LOVE FOR THE MONSOONS Sukanya Guha Alumni of Banaras Hindu University, India Contact: [email protected] Abstract In India, Bengal’s most celebrated literary figure, Rabindranath Tagore, was specifically sensitive regarding the various seasons occurring in India. The monsoon and its relation with Tagore’s songs is the main focus of this paper. The monsoon, when Mother Nature spreads her beauty by unravelling her bounty treasures, is richly expressed by Tagore. In the composition for the khanika (poem) ‘Asho nai tumi phalgune’ [you did not come in the spring season] Tagore says: “when I awaited eagerly for your visit in the spring, you didn’t come. Please, don’t make me wait any longer and do come during the full monsoon”. In another of his songs he visualises on a cloudy sunless day, a person’s longing to share his or her deepest treasure of feeling for that particular important person ‘Emon ghonoghor boroshaye’ [in this heavy downpour] (Tagore 2002: 333, song 248). Through these poetic compositions and many more, one may understand the depth in Tagore’s understanding of the human’s emotional details regarding this specific season. The monsoon may also be disastrous. According to Tagore’s a composition ‘Bame rakho bhoyonkori’ [keep aside the destructions] (Tagore 2002: 394, song 58) he describes as well as wishes that the monsoon keeps away the damage or distress from people’s lives. His tunes blend with his words and emotions, not to mention the ragas that are believed to be related with rain that is popular to the Indian subcontinent such as Rag Megh or Rag Mian ki Malhar.
