    It doesn't make much difference how the paint is put on as long as something has been said. Technique is just a means of arriving at a statement. SYNOPSIS In its edition of August 8th, 1949, Life magazine ran a feature article about Jackson Pollock that bore this question in the headline: "Is he the greatest living painter in the United States?" Could a painter who flung paint at canvases with a stick, who poured and hurled it to create roiling vortexes of color and line, possibly be considered "great"? New York's critics certainly thought so, and Pollock's pre-eminence among the Abstract Expressionists has endured, cemented by the legend of his alcoholism and his early death. Miliani1,2* Abstract Alchemy (1947, Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice) is one of the most materic works by J. Pollock, whose palette is extensive, ranging from white to yellow, red, green, violet, blue, black, and silver. Each layer of color was laid on top of a previously dried one and effectively separated from the lower one forming a quite complex stratigraphy with colors intersecting each other. In this study, a non-invasive multi-technique method combining point analysis with Vis–NIR multispectral imaging has been exploited to give insights on the painting technique of the American abstract expressionist. The molecular identification of pigments, colorants and extenders contained in fifteen different paints has been achieved combining key spectral markers from elemental, electronic and vibrational spectroscopies. For those colors exhibiting similar hues but different chemical compositions, a mapping procedure based on false color rendering, obtained by properly mixing three spectral planes from the Vis–NIR multispectral imaging set, has been successfully applied. Relevant for the understanding of the evolution of Pollock’s drip technique is the identification of both traditional oil-based paints and oil-modified alkyd media. Point analysis by reflection FTIR scattered throughout the painting enabled mapping the distinct use of traditional and new binding media among painted, squeezed and dripped paints.

During his lifetime, Pollock enjoyed considerable fame and notoriety. He was regarded as a mostly reclusive artist. He had a volatile personality, and struggled with alcoholism for most of his life. In 1945, he married the artist Lee Krasner, who became an important influence on his career and on his legacy.[4] Pollock died at the age of 44 in an alcohol-related car accident. In December 1956, he was given a memorial retrospective exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City, and a larger more comprehensive exhibition there in 1967. More recently, in 1998 and 1999, his work was honored with large-scale retrospective exhibitions at MoMA and at The Tate in London.[5] In 2000, Pollock was the subject of an Academy Award–winning film Pollock directed by and starring Ed Harris. Early life Pollock was born in Cody, Wyoming in 1912,[6] the youngest of five sons. His parents, Stella May McClure and Leroy Pollock, grew up in Tingley, Iowa.

The fact that Pollock’s public declarations about his work are collages, juxtaposing dif- ferent voices and points of view with his own, complicates our assessment of their validity as univocal expressions of his intentions. In his film Jackson Pollock, Namuth utilizes those statements, many of which concern aspects of Pollock’s technical procedure, as part of his strategy to ground the meaning of Pollock’s paintings in the process by which his paintings were made.

    Jackson Pollock: “Action Jackson” Jackson Pollock was born in Cody, Wyoming, USA in 1912, the youngest of five brothers. The family didn’t have much money and had to move from one farm or ranch to another around the American West. Even though there was plenty of work for everyone, Jackson’s mother encouraged her children to do art. The Pollock family enJoying watermelon. The blue arrow points to Jackson! When Jackson Pollock was eight years old, he lived in an area of California near Native American communities. He heard stories, saw dances and watched artists create sand paintings. He included some of these symbols and ideas in his later paintings. When Jackson got a little older, his father travelled for his Job as a land surveyor for the government. Pollock and his brothers sometimes went with him on trips. Here is a photo of Pollock with his father at age 14 or 15 at the Grand Canyon in Arizona in 1927. Pollock studied art in high school in Los Angeles, California, but had trouble getting along with the teachers and students. At age 18, Jackson moved across the country to New York City. He Joined his older brother Charles studying at an art school there. Pollock’s art teacher in New York, Thomas Hart Benton, inspired some of Pollock’s early paintings. Benton liked painting western themes. On the left is a painting by Pollock’s teacher. On the right is a painting by Jackson Pollock. How are these two paintings similar? How are they different? I need the resistance of a hard surface. On the floor I am more at ease. I feel nearer, more a part of the painting, since this way I can walk around it, work from the four sides and literally be in the painting.
