  • IN-DEPTH ANALYSIS New Zealand Selected Political and Economic Issues
DIRECTORATE-GENERAL FOR EXTERNAL POLICIES POLICY DEPARTMENT IN-DEPTH ANALYSIS New Zealand Selected political and economic issues Author: Roberto BENDINI Abstract For many years New Zealand appeared an essentially European country located in the midst of the Pacific Ocean, some 15 000 kilometres from Europe. Yet in recent decades the country has welcomed significant numbers of Asian immigrants and integrated its economy with the emerging economies of its Asian neighbours, and notably China. Recent elections secured another three-year mandate for a coalition of centre-right parties. Led by Prime Minister John Key, the government is expected to further promote investment and adopt business-friendly measures in the upcoming term. With an active foreign policy – especially in the Asia-Pacific region – the country has often participated in UN-led or international peacekeeping missions. New Zealand's upright reputation earned the country a non-permanent seat in the UN Security Council for the period 2015- 2017. Relations with the EU are good despite declining bilateral trade and the country's growing focus on the Asia Pacific region. In 2014 the EU and New Zealand successfully concluded negotiations for a Framework Agreement. Free trade agreement talks may be opened later this year. • Maritime Security
Australia and New Zealand in the Asia Pacific. Maritime Security Maritime security is of vital importance to Australia and New Zealand, as both countries depend on maritime transport for their economic survival. Since the events of 11 September 2001 serious questions have been raised as to whether Australia and New Zealand are adequately prepared for the con- sequences of a major disruption of global shipping following a terrorist attack on a leading regional port such as Hong Kong or Singapore. Considerable efforts have been undertaken to improve responses to an array of maritime security threats, such as transnational crime, environmental pollution and piracy and armed robbery. This volume identifies the issues that particularly affect Australia and New Zealand’s maritime security, evaluating the issues from legal and political perspec- tives, and proposes methods for improving the maritime security of the two coun- tries. While the focus is primarily on Australia and New Zealand, the scope extends to regional considerations, addressing matters related to Pacific island states, South East Asia and the Antarctic and sub-Antarctic regions. The book also addresses strategic partnerships, examining the influence of the United States, and analyses issues within the broad framework of international law and politics. Maritime Security: International Law and Policy Perspectives from Australia and New Zealand will be of great interest to scholars of international law, international relations and maritime affairs, maritime industry professionals, private and government lawyers, as well as diplomats, consuls and government officials. Natalie Klein is an Associate Professor at Macquarie Law School, Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia. Joanna Mossop is a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Law at Victoria University of Wellington, Wellington, New Zealand.

These records are the historical base of NIWA's scientific advice to central and local government on issues relating to climate change. NIWA maintains temperature archives for the past century, and also projects them forward for the next century. The statement of claim filed on behalf of the New Zealand Climate Science Education Trust (NZCSET) asks the court for three rulings: A: to set aside NIWA's decisions to rely upon its Seven Station Series (7SS) and Eleven Station Series (11SS), and to find the current NZTR to be invalid B: to prevent NIWA from using the current NZTR (or information originally derived from it) for the purpose of advice to any governmental authority or to the public C: to require NIWA to produce a full and accurate NZTR. ''Twentieth-century temperature records are now being challenged all around the world" said Bryan Leyland, spokesman for the NZCSET. "But I think we are the first country where the issues are to be placed squarely before an independent judicial forum." “Many scientists believe that, although the earth has been in a natural warming phase for the past 150 years, it has not heated as much as Government archives claim.

  • The Royal New Zealand Navy, 1910-2010 Michael Wynd
The history of the Royal New Zealand Navy is a progression of small steps from Empire to independence. The navy in New Zealand has followed a very different path when compared to the experience of Australia and Canada. This paper will explore the influence of such factors as the nation’s manpower and financial capacity to build a fleet, perception of New Zealand’s place within the Empire, a growing self-awareness post- 1945, domestic and party factional politics in the 1970s and 1980s, and finally a shift back to multilateralism and cooperation in the past two decades.
