  • A Linguistic Bridge Between Alienation and Intimacy: Chabad's
A Linguistic Bridge Between Alienation and Intimacy: Chabad’s Theorization of Yiddish in Historical and Cultural Perspective by Eli Rubin In geveb: A Journal of Yiddish Studies (February 2019) For the online version of this article: http://ingeveb.org/articles/a-linguistic-bridge-between-alienation-and-intimacy 1 ב״ה A Linguistic Bridge Between Alienation and Intimacy: Chabad’s Theorization of Yiddish in Historical and Cultural Perspective By Eli Rubin Eli Rubin is an editor and research writer at Chabad.org, and a graduate research student in the Department of Hebrew and Jewish Studies, University College London. His research focuses on Chabad’s intellectual, social and cultural trajectories from its origins to the present day. Abstract: Yiddish has always been the oracular mainstay of Chabad's intellectual and spiritual trajectory. Initially it was simply the vernacular of the Jews in Eastern Europe, and its use, even in Hasidic publications, merely reflected its utility as a linguistic medium for the dissemination of Hasidic teachings. From the mid-nineteenth century, however, Yiddish became a contested language, an ideological and cultural battleground. In response to the linguistic interventions proposed by proponents of Haskalah and Zionism, Yiddish became subject to broader ideological considerations for Chabad’s leaders. By the 1920s, processes of urbanization and migration had dramatically changed the linguistic environment in which Chabad sought to perpetuate its teachings, and the use of Yiddish began to be seen as a link to the past, but also as a gateway for the translation of Hasidic teachings into other languages, an initiative in which women played important roles.

223 Pre-Messianic Modifications in the Thought of Rav Kook and the Lubavitcher Rebbe By: YOSEF BRONSTEIN Great and exalted is the study of Habaḍ philosophy, the discipline that most enlightens the Torah of the holy of Israel, the Bal Shem Tov, which was certainly prepared for the redemption… 1 -Rav Kook Two of the most influential rabbis of the 20th century were Rabbi Av- raham Kook and Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson (henceforth, the Rebbe). While they were active decades and thousands of miles apart, they share the distinction of becoming the ideological leaders of strongly com- mitted communities on new shores: Rav Kook in Israel and the Rebbe in Crown Heights. Though on the surface there is little in common between the Religious-Zionist community of Israel and the Habaḍ community of Crown Heights, in this essay I will outline one underlying fundamental element of their philosophies that that is strikingly common to both. Rav Kook and the Rebbe were both students of the Habaḍ tradition2 and were innovative3 within it in an almost identical fashion. After analyzing the 1 Iggerot ha-Raiyah Volume 4, letter 1,444. The continuation of the quote appears at the end of the essay. 2 It is clear that Rav Kook was influenced by Habad,̣ particularly regarding the topic of this essay. See note 17. However, it is also important to emphasize that Rav Kook prided himself on being eclectic. See the citation from his letters at the conclusion of this essay and Lawrence Fine, “Rav Abraham Isaac Kook and the Jewish Mystical Tradition,” Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook and Jewish Spirituality, ed.

Lubavitch Hasidism - Jewish Studies - Oxford Bibliographies 30/04/2017, 1005 Lubavitch Hasidism Wojciech Tworek LAST MODIFIED: 27 APRIL 2017 DOI: 10.1093/OBO/9780199840731-0153 Introduction Chabad Hasidism developed at the end of the 18th century around the persona of rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liady (b. 1745–d. 1813). Shneur Zalman, who was a student of two important leaders of the nascent Hasidic movement, Dov Ber of Mezeritch and Menachem Mendel of Witebsk, gradually rose to become a Hasidic leader in his own right following the latter’s emigration to Palestine. His literary output, which encompasses both legal and mystical teachings, forms the core of Chabad doctrine. Following his death and a succession feud, his followers split into two groups. One followed his son Dov Ber Shneuri (b. 1773–d. 1827), while another followed his outstanding disciple, Aharon ha-Levi (b. 1766–d. 1826). Dov Ber relocated to the neighboring town of Lyubavitchi, from which the movement got the second part of its name: Chabad-Lubavitch. Aharon did not manage to perpetuate his leadership; when he died the majority of his followers rejoined Chabad-Lubavitch, confirming the father-to-son succession model in Chabad. Lyubavitchi remained the spiritual center of the Lubavitch faction of Chabad until 1915, when the fifth rebbe, Shalom Dovber Schneersohn (b. 1860– d. 1920), relocated to Rostov in an attempt to flee the advancing German army. After the October Revolution, the new communist regime and the antireligious persecutions that followed eventually forced Chabad out of Russia and into Latvia and Poland. The Polish episode in Chabad history did not last long and was abruptly ended by the outbreak of the Second World War.
