Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized. -

Phased School Reopening Health and Safety Plan Template Each school entity must create a Health and Safety Plan which will serve as the local guidelines for all instructional and non-instructional school reopening activities. As with all emergency plans, the Health and Safety Plan developed for each school entity should be tailored to the unique needs of each school and should be created in consultation with local health agencies. Given the dynamic nature of the pandemic, each plan should incorporate enough flexibility to adapt to changing conditions. The templates provided in this toolkit can be used to document a school entity’s Health and Safety Plan, with a focus on professional learning and communications, to ensure all stakeholders are fully informed and prepared for a local phased reopening of school facilities. A school entity’s Health and Safety Plan must be approved by its governing body and posted on the school entity’s publicly available website prior to the reopening of school. School entities should also consider whether the adoption of a new policy or the modification of an existing policy is necessary to effectively implement the Health and Safety Plan. Each school entity should continue to monitor its Health and Safety Plan throughout the year and update as needed. All revisions should be reviewed and approved by the governing body prior to posting on the school entity’s public website. Nr. 13 Protestantischer Liebe Leserinnen, liebe Leser! Dieses Jahr gibt es Unmengen an Obst, zumindest hier in unseren Potzberggemeinden. Der milde Winter und der Potzbergbote Regen zu richtigen Zeit hat wohl das Seinige dazu beige- tragen - die Bäume und Sträucher tragen so viel Obst, dass sich die Äste bis zum Boden biegen. Einige sind schon gebrochen von der Last. Viele Leute stellen verwundert fest, dass sie sich an solch einen Obstsegen in den letzten Jahrzehnten nicht erinnern können, und jeder ist bemüht, von diesem Segen zu retten und zu bewahren, was nur geht. Da kommt das Erntedankfest genau richtig. Das Christentum kennt seit über 1500 Jahren dieses Dankfest. Wir feiern es in unseren Kirchen am 5. Oktober in Mühlbach und am 12. Oktober in Gimsbach und in Neunkirchen. Hier danken wir Gott für seine vielfältigen guten Gaben, die uns das Leben auf der Erde erst ermöglichen, sind uns bewusst, dass wir darauf wenig Einfluss haben und werden daran erinnert, dass uns diese Gaben letztendlich auch nicht gehören. Danken bedeutet aber auch: den Überfluss teilen und weitergeben – was in unseren Dörfern auch Wenn du dein Land aberntest, sollst du nicht alles gerne und vielfach bis an die Ecken deines Feldes abschneiden, praktiziert wird! Action, Criticism, and Theory for Music Education Electronic Article 1 ________________________________________________________________________________________ Introduction Wayne Bowman, Editor I am pleased to introduce the first ‘regular’ issue of Action, Criticism, & Theory for Music Education it has been my responsibility to edit. I have been extensively involved as Associate Editor since the journal’s inception in 2002, and have had the privilege of working closely with Thomas Regelski as he undertook “from scratch” the immense task of creating a successful new open-access journal for music education. I remember well discussing the ACT idea over breakfast with Tom and with Terry Gates in Helsinki, Finland in Summer of 2000. Darryl Coan had generously indicated both interest and willingness to take on the publication end of things— the design considerations and the numerous challenges associated with web-based publication. And the need for a journal with the editorial orientation being proposed was clear to us. Should we proceed? Obviously, we decided take the leap. To say “the rest is history,” while true, is equally misleading: as is usually the case when this cliché is invoked, considerably more has been involved than the mere passage of time. Thomas Regelski and Darryl Coan worked long and tirelessly to assure the successful launch of ACT, for which, I am sure, readers are grateful. Their (our) efforts would not have been nearly so daunting had there been an infrastructure in place—institutional supports, finances, technical or secretarial support, and the like. But a pivotal concern since ACT’s inception has been its autonomy and independence—its ability to publish critical scholarly work utterly free from institutional constraints or commercial obligations. -

Chapters in the 1969 evaluation report are "What We Did and Why," "The Schools That Were Compared," "Community Relationships," "The Dormitories," "Programs of Instruction," "Teacher Characteristics and Concerns," "Pupil Attitude and Achievement," "Harbingers of Change," and "General Conclusions." Schools included in the comparative study with RRDS are Rock Point Boarding School, Chinle Boarding School, and Chinle Public Elementary School. As stated, the main comparisons relate to a carefully selected sample of pupils in each school (pupil criteria are given for all 4 schools). The report provides results of interviews held with teachers, parents, school staff, and other community members in the target areas. Among the findings, it is pointed out that RRDS was believed to be a successful experiment in introducing the new concept of involving Indian adults to exercise authority in controlling their own school. However, it is noted "that the primary focus of administrators (at RRDS) seemed to be on public relations,...that the secondary emphasis was on an employment program for local people, and that other affairs of the school were neglected" (see RC 005 062). -
