[20] "In southern Wello, there are still a few areas where indigenous trees survive in pockets of remaining forests. -- A highlight of our trip was a visit to Anabe, one of the few forests of Podocarpus, locally known as Zegba, remaining in southern Wello. -- Professor Bahru notes that Anabe was 'discovered' relatively recently, in 1978, when a forester was looking for a nursery site. In imperial days the area fell under the category of balabbat land before it was converted into a madbet of the Crown Prince. After its 'discovery' it was declared a protected forest. Anabe is some 30 kms to the west of the town of Gerba, which is on the Kombolcha-Bati road. Until recently the rough road from Gerba was completed only up to the market town of Adame, from which it took three hours' walk to the forest. A road built by local people -- with European Union funding now makes the forest accessible in a four-wheel drive vehicle. -

Lydon, Chair This thesis historically traces the development and interactions of Christianity, Judaism, and Islam in Ethiopia. This analysis of the interactions between the Abrahamic faiths is primarily concerned with identifying notable periods of social cohesion in an effort to contest mainstream narratives that often pit the three against each other. This task is undertaken by incorporating a comparative analysis of the Ethiopian Christian code, the Fetha Nagast (Law of Kings), with Islamic and Judaic legal traditions. Identifying the common threads weaved throughout the Abrahamic legal traditions demonstrates how the historical development and periods of social cohesion in Ethiopia were facilitated. ii The thesis of David Benjamin Spielman is approved. This is the accepted version of a forthcoming article that will be published by Cambridge University Press in The Journal of African History: https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/journal-of-african-history/all-issues Accepted version downloaded from SOAS Research Online: http://eprints.soas.ac.uk/24350/ History in twentieth-century Ethiopia: The ‘Great Tradition’ and the counter-histories of national failure SARA MARZAGORA, SOAS UNIVERSITY OF LONDON ABSTRACT Drawing from both fictional and non-fictional sources, this article traces the way history was conceptualised in twentieth century Ethiopia by secular educated elites, charting out the changing power relations between Ethiopia‘s hegemonic historiographical paradigm, and the alternative historical visions that challenged this ‗Great Tradition‘ over the course of the century. While the Great Tradition extols Ethiopia‘s past and future glories, the counter-histories focused instead on the country‘s failure to develop and democratise. Against the interpretation that the counter-histories supplanted the Great Tradition in the late 1960s, the article examines them in terms of complementarity. The intellectual interventions of young student radicals in the late 1960s constitute a break, but not a drastic paradigm shift, from the past. The Great Tradition had already been put into question by older generations of intellectuals, even if they proved unable or unwilling to translate their disillusionment in political action. Ethiopian Constitution, the Flag, Map, and Federalism by Mastewal There have been contentions to the Ethiopian present constitution and even the flag and its administrative arrangement in the way it is governed federally. In the forefront of these oppositions have been the political parties and the Ethiopian diaspora, who have been airing their concerns. Some, who oppose the present flag, are seen with the flag used during the Emperor Haile Selassie’s rule with the lion carrying the cross. Some use the civil flag of Ethiopia. Why changes have been made in the Ethiopian flag and its administrative regions have their historical backgrounds. But, the argument goes on and on as pros and cons in fear of disintegration of the country. The contentions can be damaging if the struggle for changing the above if not made in a civilized way and go out of hand as evidenced in some instances. Innocents can be incited to adopt radical changes. If you remember Aesop, the Greek fabulist and storyteller in your school time, then you come across in what he is presumed to have said, “the injuries we do and those we suffer are seldom weighted in the same scales.” I just want to quote George M. Church in respect to changes. He is taking the comparison between a dinosaur and ostrich. As you all know dinosaur is an extinct creature, which lived in our world over hundred millions years ago. May be the dinosaur evolved to an ostrich. “What dinosaur traits are missing from an ostrich? The ostrich has a toothless beak, but there are mutations that cause teeth and claws to come back to their mouth and limbs. -

Levine (1974), author of Greater Ethiopia: The Evolution of a Multi-ethnic Society , who has popularized Carlo Conti-Rossin's description of Ethiopia as 'un museo di popoli' - 'a museum of peoples' (pp. 19-20) has credited the evolution of multi-ethnic Ethiopia as an 'Amhara thesis', 'Oromo anti-thesis' and the 'Ethiopian synthesis'. Whatever the merits of his historical analysis and the anthropological fascination thereof for the making of Ethiopia, at a point in time his work did go to the press, the country moved to a crisis of major proportion whose resultant effect was a revolutionary reconstitution of both state and society that relegated the country's ancien regime to the museum of history. -

PREPRINT 4 The Sultanates of Medieval Ethiopia Amélie Chekroun and Bertrand Hirsch Given its geographical situation across the Red Sea from the Arabian Peninsula and the Gulf of Aden, it is perhaps not surprising that the Horn of Africa was exposed to an early and continuous presence of Islam during the Middle Ages. Indeed, it has long been known that Muslim communities and Islamic sultanates flourished in Ethiopia and bordering lands during the medieval centuries. However, despite a sizeable amount of Ethiopian Christian documents (in Gǝʿǝz) relating to their Muslim neighbors and valuable Arabic literary sources produced outside Ethiopia and, in some cases, emanating from Ethiopian communities themselves, the Islamic presence in Ethiopia remains difficult to apprehend. -

Johann Michael Wansleben1 on the Coptic Church Anthony Alcock The text that follows translates the chapter 'Relatione dello stato eccelesiastico dei Copti' on pp. 130-221 of the book entitled Relazione dell Stato presente dell'Egitto, written after Wansleben's first stay in Egypt and published in 1671. When he made the journey, he was a Protestant. When the report was written and published, he was a Catholic. Johann Michael Wansleben (1635-1679) was born in Sömmerda.2 After studying at Erfurt and Königsberg, Wansleben became a private tutor in an aristocratic family in Marienwerder, but left this employment to join the Prussian army and fight in the 1657 campaign against Poland. 3 After a brief period he returned to Erfurt, where he met Hiob Ludolf, a distinguished Ethiopic scholar and tutor of the children of Ernst, Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha,4 who took him on as an assistant because he saw that Wansleben had a talent for learning languages. He learned enough Ethiopic to oversee the printing of Ludolf's dictionary in 1661 in London,5 there being no suitable ones in Germany after the ravages of the Thirty Year War, which had ended only 13 years previously. While there, he made changes to Ludolf's work, which may not have pleased the great scholar. In 1663 he started out on a journey to Ethiopia, financed by the Duke. The background to this is that Ernst some years before had been introduced by Ludolf to an Ethiopian prelate. Ludolf convinced Ernst that Ethiopia might be fertile ground for the spread of Lutheranism.
