In this regard the team managed to patrol Aruba, Ndara, Ndii, Irima, Lion hill park boundary, Maktau hills, Ziwani, Kishushe, Saltlick, Wanjala, Kangeshwa, Lumo community ranch and along Mzima water pipeline. Following the worrying trend of killing of our God given wild animals, Simba team decided to sweep out all wildlife threat related activity whatsoever .In Tsavo east National park at Irima and Lion hill, the team managed to lift 8 medium snares which targeted Impalas and other antelopes. The team found a speared giant elephant bull while on its desnaring exercise around lion hill lodge. The team then informed the wildlife vet officers sponsored by our organization with haste about the case, the vet officer responded quickly. After the bull was sedated, we realized it had more than seven marks of other healed arrow wounds, an indicative that it had survived several attempts. We managed to treat the bull and everybody was happy to see the bull rise up back to its life and we all wished it quick recovery. This was a few days after other eight elephants were mercilessly massacred and their tusks hacked off at Ndara area. The team attended a hearing at Wundanyi law court after one of the bush meat poacher we had arrested decline one among other offenses we had filed on him. One of the team members testified against him with the help of KWS prosecutor and eventually the poacher was awarded a short term sentence of three years imprisonment. Later the team moved from Tsavo National park to Tsavo west National park where it majored much of its operations on the ranches which borders the park. We patrolled Kishushe ranch and managed to arrest three poachers who were disguised as charcoal burners yet they had tools used both for poaching and charcoal burning. The team discovered that they had laid 30 small snares around the area while they were preparing wood for charcoal burning. Charcoal burning in ranches is becoming a flagship mission for other wildlife related threats. This forced the Simba team leader to approach the forestry management at Wundanyi headquarters to stop the issuance of charcoal burning permits which was to begin early month of June. The team leader convinced the forest officers with facts beyond reasonable doubts. The permit process was then cancelled something that translated to an extra lease of life for our wildlife. The team also patrolled along Mzima water pipeline and managed to lift 26 snares near one of the breathers which targeted small game. Now that the long rains season is over and the dry season is approaching, the wild animals will have to move to areas near water sources like Mzima water pipeline and Tsavo River. Since the animals will be concentrated around the watering areas, they will be easy targets for the poachers. With this in mind, Simba team intends to concentrate much of its next month’s operations around these areas so as to lessen the poaching pressure.
