Radica en Barcelona desde hace más de 7 años, nacida en La Plata, Argentina. Ha cursado estudios en artes plásticas con orientación en grabado, un poco de composición musical, cine, animación, vitrofusión, y vitrales. Cuenta con una vasta lista de exposiciones y premios en artes plásticas, pintura y grabado; logrados tanto en su país natal como en España, donde también ha cosechado reconocimientos en el área de cortometrajes con “Stop Motion”, que produce junto a Hernán Cieza (Mono). También ha colaborado con revistas como Sex Humor y Rolling Stone.

En sus trabajos se perciben ciertos toques infantiles, pero a la vez oscuros y llenos de detalles que atrapan poco a poco; pero dejamos a juicio del lector sacar sus propias conclusiones sobre el arte de Peca.

12 Born in La Plata, Argentina, Peca has in lived in Barcelona for the last seven years. She has taken courses in plastic arts, specialising in lithography, some musical composition, cinema, animation, glass-blowing and staining. She has exhibited on numerous occasions and won prizes in plastic arts, painting and lithography; achieved both in her home country and in Spain, where she has also been recognised in the world of short films, with “Stop Motion”, which she produced alongside Hernán Cieza (Mono). She has collaborated with magazines such as Sex Humor and Rolling Stone, too.

Certain infantile touches can be perceived in her work, but these are also dark and full of detail, catching you little by little; but we will let the reader make his/her own mind up about Peca’s art.

¿Por qué Barcelona?

“A principios del 2001 vine aquí, buscando salir un poco del clima que se vivía en Argentina antes de la crisis, y salir del estancamiento económico al que estábamos condenados. Cuando recién llegamos, -vine con el Mono, mi compañero-, Barcelona era otra ciudad, con mucho menos control, con otro aire, había una comunión natural con el lugar y entre la gente que llegábamos de tantos diversos lugares. Pero, como ya se sabe eso duró muy poco, después de las torres gemelas, el mundo se volvió loco, aumentó el control y la paranoia, se perdió en gran parte esa comunión y nos metimos para adentro”.

“De todas formas creo que Barcelona todavía es un buen lugar para vivir, lo que pasó aquí es un cambio que se dio a gran escala y aún no lo hemos asimilado. Pero la ciudad en sí a mi me encanta; me encanta el pastiche de gente que se ha juntado. Yo la siento mi ciudad, si tuviera que cambiar algo le sacaría policías, con eso sólo creo se reestructuraría el orden natural”.

urban CATARSIS_ 25 Para que las cosas salgan bien y más en estos tiempos, hay que multiplicarse; para lograr mejores efectos no basta direccionarse en un sólo sentido sino que siendo congruentes, también diversificarse; mientras más, mejor. Quizá siguiendo esta premisa a Anja Schneider las cosas le han resultado muy bien. Cuadruplicándose, ha logrado figurar en la escena electrónica berlinesa, así como que DJs pinchen sus tracks a lo largo de todo el mundo y reclutar una fila de artistas nuevos y con potencial. Productora, Dj, dueña de un sello (Mobilee Records) y figura de la radio Alemana, Anja Schneider nos muestra que la diversificación con un sentido definido tiene, definitivamente, mucho futuro.

Desde el 2000 es dueña de un espacio semanal en Fritz Radio (Alemania), donde una de las peculiaridades del programa es que, dejando atrás los celos del acceso a la información, procura dar el nombre de los tracks que expone.

Recientemente creó el sello Mobilee, que con sólo 30 referencias intenta distinguirse en el competitivo mercado berlinés, mostrando sonidos deep house, frescos, groovies y minimalistas; ponderando siempre la melodía y el sentimiento. Finalmente Anja, podría describirse también con cuatro palabras: sentimiento, movimiento, profundidad y claridad.

28 28 There are differences between male and female DJs. Why do you think female DJs have such a special connection with the audience? I think women in general have a better intuition. We are working very concentrated, don’t take ourselves too seriously but always do a serious job. I can´t speak for all my female colleagues of course. Everyone is different. I just concentrate on myself.

There are very few women DJs who stand out on stage (at least in terms of popularity). Why do you think that is? I think there are quite a lot of very good and successful female DJs in the world. And new talents are coming up and developing in the scene. It’s more and more usual that women are DJing and adding a different style and attitude to the club circus. All of them are playing on the same level as their male colleagues.

Radio is a massive popular medium. It was more so before. How do you intend to popularise electronic music without making it commercial? I have nothing against commercialising. At least we all can be happy if we are reaching more people with our sounds and ideas and can be proud of getting more people interested for our music. You just have to be honest to yourself every time and not only focus on doing something commercial or something that works for a wider audience. If you hit the taste of a big audience by just doing what you feel, I think it’s wonderful.

Moving forward in time, after minimal, how do you see the future of electronic music? I guess the melodies are coming back, we will find more harmonies, more warm sounds again and tracks who last longer than a few weeks hopefully and are really recognisable in between the flood of electronic music.

How would you describe Barcelona? LOVELY AND BEAUTIFUL!

What next for Anja in 2009? More Mobilee or more DJing? Any new projects? I’m releasing my debut album “ Beyond The Valley” on the 7th of May this year and I am going on a very big tour together with our mobilee visual artists Okinawa ANJA SCHNEIDER 69 and my co-producer Paul Brtschitsch. (Jewish-Ukrainian Freundschaft), o que es lo mismo, camaradería judeo-ucraniana. 32 Balkan Beat Box Creada en el 2004 por Tamir Muskat y Ori Kaplan – productor e integrante de Gogol Bordello respectivamente-, Balkan Beat Box integra a músicos y compositores dotados de expresión. Se contempla como una reacción musical para la eliminación de fronteras políticas, como ellos mismo mencionan: “si nuestros oídos no tienen fronteras, ¿por qué las deberíamos tener nosotros?”. Conocedores tanto de sus raíces como de diversas culturas, colaboran con artistas de Marruecos, España, Palestina y Bulgaria entre otros tantos, para dar forma a este proyecto. Su sonido es una mezcla de sonidos electrónicos (trance y techno) con elementos de la música mediterránea, judía, balcánica, europea y americana, pero siempre con la intención gitana que concreta esta propuesta. Cuentan con dos trabajos, su homónimo álbum debut Balkan Beat Box (2005) donde la banda compagina samples de heavy metal francesas con letras árabes, beats electrónicos y hasta utensilios de cocina. Un sonido exótico y energético difícil de describir por la convergencia de todo esto. Un- Med (2007) es su segunda y reciente entrega, donde la combinación de los beats, voces y ritmos hacen una explosión multicultural. Vale la pena escuchar estas dos propuestas, dos licuadoras de sonidos y ritmos que contemplan a la música gitana como protagonista, dándole el reconocimiento que merece por su presencia e influencia en la escena musical.

It is considered a musical reaction to eliminate political borders, as they themselves explain: “if our ears have no borders, why should we have them?” Knowing their roots and many diverse cultures, they collaborate with artists from Morocco, Spain, Palestine and Bulgaria among others, giving shape to this project.

Their sound is a mix of electronic sounds (trance and techno) with elements of Mediterranean, Jewish, Balkan, European and American music, but always with the gipsy intention which concretes their offering. They have two works to date and their self-named debut album Balkan Beat Box (2005) brings together French heavy metal samples with Arabic lyrics, electronic beats and even kitchen utensil sounds. An exotic sound, which is difficult to describe due to the unique mixture of melodies. Un-Med (2007) is their second and latest project, which sees a combination of beats, vocals and rhythms form a multi-cultural explosion.

urban CATARSIS_ 35 En esta ocasión nos vamos adentrar en el mundo del jazz- fusión, y bueno este género fue inventado básicamente por el maestro Miles Davis. Gran trompetista de jazz pero sobre todo, un compositor vanguardista y visionario de la música que cambio no sólo una, sino varias veces el curso y los cánones establecidos del jazz. Ya entrados en tema, empecemos con el box-set de 6 discos compactos a la venta el pasado 2007: “The Complete On The Corner Sessions”, al parecer el último box- set de esta serie que recopila todo el material de las sesiones de grabación de álbumes como: “Bitches Brew”, “In A Silent Way” o “A Tribute To Jack Johnson”. Ocho cajas recopilatorias que han sido incluso premiadas.

La calidad y contenido de ésta no es la excepción, empezando por su increíble diseño de empaque: una caja exterior de metal con un acabado tipo galvanizado dorado, y en relieve a color, las ilustraciones para las portadas originales hechas por Corky McCoy. La otra parte de la caja es tipo de libro con una costilla de metal, de donde se sujetan los estuches de los discos y un librillo informativo de aproximadamente120 páginas; con toda la información sobre los por menores de las sesiones y cada track, puntos de vista y comentarios de los músicos, datos de producción y muchísimas fotos e ilustraciones, y lo mejor de todo es la música.

Esta caja contiene el material incluido previamente en los álbumes “On The Corner”, “Big fun” y “Get Up With It”. Los sitios que habitamos ahora y que concebimos como propios: nuestro comedor, nuestra cocina, el parque de nuestro barrio, no han sido sólo nuestros. Pisos reformados pero sólo son en apariencia, avenidas pavimentadas sobre las que ya existían; las mismas calles, los mismos edificios, las mismas habitaciones pero con gente distinta e historias diferentes. Así es como en la ciudad los espacios se reconstruyen por sí mismos para volver a darle sentido al presente; porque adaptándose a nuestro tiempo, la Barcelona retrospectiva es la constante y nosotros el momento.
