Based on data from how Swedish youth take in hip-hop through music lyrics, rapper stereotypes, the gangster rap subgenre and rap battles, it shows that including oneself into this culture can lead to changes in one’s identity and the redefinition of one’s persona. It discusses how hip-hop influence leads to youth creating their own local oppositional culture, re-constructing perceptions of authenticity and acts as guidance in the quest for an independent identity during adolescence and early adulthood. The theoretical material considering authenticity will primarily be provided by Charles Lindholm and David Boyle. Mostafa Dehghani Dr. Sander van Splunter University of Amsterdam University of Amsterdam [email protected] [email protected] First supervisor Second supervisor Abstract This thesis demonstrates the use of sequence-to-sequence learning for the automatic generation of novel English rap lyrics, with the goal of generating lyrics with similar qualities to those of humans in terms of rhyme, idiom, structure, and novelty. The sequence-to-sequence model tries to learn the best parameters for generating target sequences given source sequences, and is trained on over 1.6 million source-target pairs, containing lyrics from 348 different rap artists. The automatic evaluations of each of the four characteristics show that idiom and structure have the best performance, whereas rhyme and novelty should be improved to be in a similar range of human lyrics. Western Influence on Armenian Music The United States is one of the world’s largest exporters of media and popular culture. Many great musicians, actors and writers find solace in the creative freedom offered by western countries. The impact that these artists once had on the world still resonates to this day, undeniably influencing modern musicians for generations to come. Legendary bands such as The Beatles, Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, and Led Zeppelin, to name a few, all met with massive success in western countries, particularly in the United States and England. Their fame quickly spread worldwide and inspired many other musicians to reproduce their sound, dress, and style. One of these inspired countries is Armenia. While Armenia does boast an impressive resume of singers and jazz musicians, these talented Armenians have done little to change the course of musical history. The western artists are way ahead of the pack, achieving milestone after milestone, while the eastern countries absorb the new genres like a sponge only to repackage but not progress them. Although a handful of great Armenian artists such as Djivan Gasparyan, arguably the world’s greatest duduk player, Norayr Mnatsakanyan, a highly influential vocalist, and a more dated legend, Sayat-Nova, are the leaders in traditional Armenian music, Armenian folk does not seem to stimulate enough interest outside of an Armenian household to make a monumental impact on music as a whole. One Armenian band, however, has made a global impact on the music scene. System of a Down, a four man, 100% Armenian band, has undoubtedly influenced the hard rock/ metal genre.

Before the progressive Southern group took shape, Deacon the Villain from Kentucky and Kno from Georgia were individually known for their skills on the mike and in the producer’s chair. The duo’s debut, Will Rap For Food , appeared on the small Urban Aces label in 2001 and soon went out of print. Rave reviews and Internet message boards helped make the album a collector’s item until it was reissued by the Caroline-associated FreshChest label. FreshChest was also responsible for CunninLynguists’ sophomore effort, 2003’s Southernunderground , which found Mr. SOS joining the group, allowing Kno to focus on production. The album featured guest appearances by Masta Ace and RJD2, as well as some political material in response to the September 11, 2001 attacks. Two loose mixtapes featuring a parade of guest stars, Sloppy Seconds, Vol. 1 and Sloppy Seconds, Vol. 2 , preceded the group’s third album, as did the departure of Mr. SOS. A Piece of Strange , released by The LA Underground/QN5 Music in early 2006, featured newly recruited member Natti and appearances by Cee Lo Green and Immortal Technique. CunninLynguists’ fourth album Dirty Acres appeared on Bad Taste in 2007 with Devin the Dude, Phonte, and Witchdoctor contributing guest verses. Two more mixtapes followed in 2009. Kno released his debut solo album, Death Is Silent , in 2010. CunninLynguists returned in 2011 with their fifth proper studio album, Oneirology , which featured Big K.R.I.T.
