Culture
Best grown in sandy, loamy, well-drained soils in full sun. Good drainage is essential. A tap-rooted plant which tolerates heat, humidity and some drought. Remove spent flower spikes to prolong bloom period. If plants become leggy and flop, particularly when grown in rich soils, they can benefit from close planting or support from adjacent perennials. May self-seed if spent flower stems are left in place in the fall.
Noteworthy Characteristics
Gardeners around the world have loved Gaura for their drought tolerance and long bloom time. BELLEZA® Dark Pink boasts excellent branching with shorter flower stems, making it an ideal choice for containers. Dark pink, star-shaped flowers have an airy appearance above the compact habit. Gaura are well-suited to dry, hot landscapes and will look great planted in masses in the landscape or singly in pots. BELLEZA® Dark Pink tolerates part shade but is best in full sun.
Problems
No serious insect or disease problems. Root rot may occur in heavy and or poorly drained soils. Rust and powdery mildew may also occur. Watch for aphids, whitefly and flea beetles.
Garden Uses
Compact, well-branched, dark-leafed plants bloom continuously. Belleza™ Dark Pink has an upright, compact habit with loads of dark pink flowers on sturdy stems. Gaura is a very drought and heat tolerant plant, and one of the longest blooming perennials if spent blooms are sheared. To ensure over-wintering, provide well-drained soil and mulch well. Spectacular in containers, borders, mass plantings, or hanging baskets.
