    SPORTS INDIA AND WORLD World Cup Cricket History The idea of organising a World Cup of cricket was mooted and agreed to in principle in 1971 when such a proposal was discussed at a meeting of the International Cricket Conference in London. However, due to various commitments the tournaments could not be staged until 1975 when the original plan of a South African team's visit to England fell through following opposition to the country's racial policy. England's Prudential Assurance Company came forward with sponsorship and for three consecutive years - 1975, 1979 and 1983, the one-day limited overs cricket tournament was held in England. It became famous as the Prudential Cup. In the first two tournaments, apart from the six full members of the International Cricket Conference (England, Australia, West Indies, New Zealand, India and Pakistan), Sri Lanka, before being elevated to Test status in 1981, had joined East Africa in 1975 and Canada in 1979 (two top teams among the associate members) to complete the groups in the tournaments proper. The West Indies, under Clive Lloyd, not only won the first two tournaments in 1975 and 1979 but in true Calypso style they produced sparkling cricket and confirmed their unassailable supremacy in this game. India broke the West Indian stranglehold in 1983 to open a new chapter in the brief annals of this prestigious tournament. ABSTRACT This publication, covering a broad spectrum of sports safety problems, is designed as a- source of information' for those who plan, organize, admit4ster, or evaluate various physical education and recreational activities,,athletics, or sports. In the first section, the prevention of sports injury is stressed with attention to different age'groUps and sexes. Some of the topics discussed are unsafe acts,-qualified supervisors, effectiveness of injury control factors, safe equipment, maintenance of surfaces andfacilities, enforcement of rules, and the acceptance of degrees of tisk. The second section deals with preconditioning, equipment, training, supervision, and specific safety criteria in skiing, trampolining, skin and scuba 'diving, and boating. The topic of.the third section es athletic training and emergency care. This section includes discussions of athletic facility safety, medical practices in sports, and emergency care practices for spectators at athletic and sports events. The fourth section discusses the legal liability of physical educators.with regard to curriculum and negligence, the school's and coach's legal responsibilities in athletics, the -legal rights and . responsibilities of team physicians, the legal aspects of adult physical fitnesS programs, and exemptions from civil liability for physical.educators while giving eiergency care.

    The funding models and performance of National Sports Federations affiliated to the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee Wessel J Strydom 23144034 A research project submitted to the Gordon Institute of Business Science, University of Pretoria in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Business Administration. 9 November 2015 Abstract The 1995 Rugby World Cup and more recently the 2010 FIFA Football World Cup proved that sport can unite a previously divided nation. In order to participate in these major tournaments and events on an international level, national sports teams have to be competitive. The funding models used by national sports federations play a vital role in ensuring that national sports teams are competitive. The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between the funding models used by the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee and the National Sports Federations; and the performance at international competitions and events. The main research methodology adopted for this study was exploratory in nature. The research design utilised was a mixed-method approach with a longitudinal design and entailed the collection and analysis of data for the period 2001 to 2014. The results from the quantitative research did not reveal any clear relationship between the variables under consideration and the performance of the national sports federations. Additional information was gathered through semi-structured interviews, which proved to be invaluable in explaining why the quantitative research did not reveal any clear relationship, between the variables under consideration and the performance of the national sports federations.
