10 SUMMARY BACKGROUND After ten long years of the Trojan war, Idomeneo finally returns home victorious. Some of his forces have already returned and brought back Trojan prisoners, among them Ilia, daughter of the dead King Priam. Upon his return from the war, Agamemnon, another victorious Greek King, was murdered by his wife Clytemnestra and her lover Aegisthus. Elettra’s brother Orestes avenged his father’s death by killing both his mother and her lover. Elettra, an orphan like Ilia, has taken refuge in Crete, where she has fallen in love with Idomeneo’s son Idamante, who has been ruling Crete in his father’s absence. ACT I Ilia grieves for her father Priam and her brothers, all killed during the Trojan war. Brought to Crete together with other Trojan prisoners of war, Ilia is torn between her secret love for the enemy king’s son Idamante and her feelings of loyalty to her people. Idamante tells Ilia that he loves her. He has decided that the victorious Greeks must embrace peace and pardon the enemy and so he releases the Trojan prisoners. At this moment Arbace, the king’s advisor, brings news that Idomeneo’s fleet has been shipwrecked in a storm and that Idomeneo has been drowned. Elettra, already outraged by Idamante’s decision to free the enemy prisoners, realises that if Idomeneo is dead she will be powerless to prevent Idamante from marrying Ilia. The storm subsides. Idomeneo and his soldiers are spared. Alone, Idomeneo is torn with guilt by the vow he made to Neptune to sacrifice the first person he should meet if his own life were spared from the storm. Idomeneo sees an unknown man approaching. It is own son, Idamante, looking for his father’s body on the shore. Father and son have not seen each other for more than ten years, so the two men do not recognize each other at first. When Idomeneo realizes who his victim is destined to be, he rushes away, leaving Idamante in despair at the loss of his newly found father.

  • NEWSLETTER of the American Handel Society
NEWSLETTER of The American Handel Society Volume XVIII, Number 1 April 2003 A PILGRIMAGE TO IOWA As I sat in the United Airways terminal of O’Hare International Airport, waiting for the recently bankrupt carrier to locate and then install an electric starter for the no. 2 engine, my mind kept returning to David Lodge’s description of the modern academic conference. In Small World (required airport reading for any twenty-first century academic), Lodge writes: “The modern conference resembles the pilgrimage of medieval Christendom in that it allows the participants to indulge themselves in all the pleasures and diversions of travel while appearing to be austerely bent on self-improvement.” He continues by listing the “penitential exercises” which normally accompany the enterprise, though, oddly enough, he omits airport delays. To be sure, the companionship in the terminal (which included nearly a dozen conferees) was anything but penitential, still, I could not help wondering if the delay was prophecy or merely a glitch. The Maryland Handel Festival was a tough act to follow and I, and perhaps others, were apprehensive about whether Handel in Iowa would live up to the high standards set by its august predecessor. In one way the comparison is inappropriate. By the time I started attending the Maryland conference (in the early ‘90’s), it was a first-rate operation, a Cadillac among festivals. Comparing a one-year event with a two-decade institution is unfair, though I am sure in the minds of many it was inevitable. Fortunately, I feel that the experience in Iowa compared very favorably with what many of us had grown accustomed Frontispiece from William Coxe, Anecdotes fo George Frederick Handel and John Christopher Smith to in Maryland.

  • MUSICWEB INTERNATIONAL Recordings of the Year 2019
MUSICWEB INTERNATIONAL Recordings Of The Year 2019 This is the seventeenth year that MusicWeb International has asked its reviewing team to nominate their recordings of the year. Reviewers are not restricted to discs they had reviewed, but the choices must have been reviewed on MWI in the last 12 months (December 2018-November 2019). The 128 selections have come from 27 members of the team and 65 different labels, the choices reflecting as usual, the great diversity of music and sources; I say that every year, but still the spread of choices surprises and pleases me. Of the selections, one has received three nominations: An English Coronation on Signum Classics and ten have received two nominations: Gounod’s Faust on Bru Zane Matthias Goerne’s Schumann Lieder on Harmonia Mundi Prokofiev’s Romeo & Juliet choreographed by John Cranko on C Major Marx’s Herbstymphonie on CPO Weinberg symphonies on DG Shostakovich piano works on Hyperion Late Beethoven sonatas on Hyperion Korngold orchestral works on Chandos Coates orchestral works on Chandos Music connected to Leonardo da Vinci on Alpha Hyperion was this year’s leading label with nine nominations, just ahead of C Major with eight. MUSICWEB INTERNATIONAL RECORDING OF THE YEAR In this twelve month period, we published more than 2300 reviews. There is no easy or entirely satisfactory way of choosing one above all others as our Recording of the Year, but this year one recording in particular put itself forward as the obvious candidate. An English Coronation 1902-1953 Simon Russell Beale, Rowan Pierce, Matthew Martin, Gabrieli Consort; Gabrieli Roar; Gabrieli Players; Chetham’s Symphonic Brass Ensemble/Paul McCreesh rec.

  • Curriculum Vitae Update Spring 2012
Edwin Andereck Cover page for Curriculum Vitae update Spring 2012 My teaching interests and responsibilities at Luther are primarily collaborative, in that I teach 5 ½ of my six course load equivalents in one on one contact with approximately 28 students through applied voice lessons. This spring I have worked with eight of those students in preparations for their individual degree recitals or full senior recitals in anticipation of graduate school studies in music. As head of voice and opera I am responsible for coordinating and facilitating the Brudos Family Prize in Opera Performance, a high profile annual auditions and a recital with the donors, Al and Sally Brudos, in attendance. That scholarship is in its eleventh year, and students from my voice studio have been winners six of those years. Each week the students in my studio meet together for a voice class/seminar in which selected performances are critiqued by peers in the class and work is done by the performer in front of the class. The rest of my faculty load is taken by teaching a half course (2 credits) survey of vocal literature for voice. The two non-required vocal literature courses, Mus 267 and Mus 268, are taught in alternating years in the spring, and afford me the opportunity of engaging the students in conversation concerning poetry (in English, German, Italian, Spanish, and French), compositional styles, great recorded performances, and historical and cultural perspective. There is a seven page writing assignment that is primarily subjective in nature, but formal in writing style, that provides students opportunity to practice writing skills.
