Triumphant Booklet.Pdf riumphant was written and recorded during 2019, the only songs penned post-pandemic being T“‘Round Here” and “Genes (bonus track)”, both pertaining to social issues we face today. Originally, my motivation for writing the album was not only to bring back the feel of the 90’s Boom Bap vibe with Jack The Rip, but to write motivational material that would get you going, as simple as that. The soundscape isn’t just a throwback, we always gotta look towards the future of the culture. The first song “Triumphant” was recorded in April 2019, right after my annual US tour. Back then I remember the urge to record something new, because as spiritually fulfilling as it is to play on stage with an unbelievable band (The Chee-Hoos), you’re still building on the same material much like a musical. Jack and I had exchanged messages for months prior to that, I marinated on that beat for 6 months. Once it was recorded, the rest came quite naturally, we just kept recording without setting any deadlines or limits (We got a few albums worth of material so look out!). Fast forward a year, we come home to Honolulu after a cancelled tour and also a scrapped plan to meet Jack and perform together in Chicago. Recalibrate. I had bumped the album for a year but not fully convinced. I heard flaws but was too scared to go in and fix them. Who can relate? We’ve all lived through 2020 through intermittent hazes, in confusion, frustration, and anger. The timing didn’t feel right to release an album unless it pertained to *exactly* what was going on. During the past year, I was heavy into activism, then digging deeper to design with my hands, and eventually I found energy from a renewable source to put the finishing touches on the album. We shed some songs to put them on a B-side project, added some new bangers, and we’re finally here to witness the delivery of the album. So sit back and enjoy! Jack The Rip and I (who share the same birthday) are really proud of this collection of works, and we hope you enjoy the whole album in its various incarnations. Shing02 thanks: Sahir Khan and Nikolas Draper Ivey for the amazing visuals, collaborators on promoting this album: Robin Calvo, Joseph Le and Team Red Pro, Kazu Kokubo, Futou Tomioka, HIJCK & J.Boogx, featured artists who colored the tracks perfectly: DJ Icewater, Nick Kurosawa, Rubén Torres Melero, and the overdubs that made the songs come alive: HIJCK, Zane Harp, and kb. Jack The Rip thanks: Friends and family for their support over the years, my children Brenley and Harlan, my life partner Amber and last but not least Hip Hop for giving me the opportunity to make some dope music. 1. • Dressing for the Times: Fashion in Tang Dynasty China (618-907)
Dressing for the Times: Fashion in Tang Dynasty China (618-907) BuYun Chen Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2013 © 2013 BuYun Chen All rights reserved ABSTRACT Dressing for the Times: Fashion in Tang Dynasty China (618-907) BuYun Chen During the Tang dynasty, an increased capacity for change created a new value system predicated on the accumulation of wealth and the obsolescence of things that is best understood as fashion. Increased wealth among Tang elites was paralleled by a greater investment in clothes, which imbued clothes with new meaning. Intellectuals, who viewed heightened commercial activity and social mobility as symptomatic of an unstable society, found such profound changes in the vestimentary landscape unsettling. For them, a range of troubling developments, including crisis in the central government, deep suspicion of the newly empowered military and professional class, and anxiety about waste and obsolescence were all subsumed under the trope of fashionable dressing. The clamor of these intellectuals about the widespread desire to be “current” reveals the significant space fashion inhabited in the empire – a space that was repeatedly gendered female. This dissertation considers fashion as a system of social practices that is governed by material relations – a system that is also embroiled in the politics of the gendered self and the body. I demonstrate that this notion of fashion is the best way to understand the process through which competition for status and self-identification among elites gradually broke away from the imperial court and its system of official ranks.

  • Knightly Arms — Plebeian Arms
Originalveröffentlichung in: Quaestiones Medii Aevi Novae, 4 (1999), S. 21-43 Zdzislaw Zygulski Jr. Cracow Knightly Arms — Plebeian Arms The science dealing with the arms of the past — Waffenkunde, hoplology — developed during the second half of the nineteenth century and was continued in assorted environments in the course of the following century. This was by no means an academic science, and did not form part of university curricula. Its institutional basis was composed primarily of museums displaying arms, specialised scientific societies or associations of lovers of old arms, whose members included collectors and amateurs. This state of things is retained up to this day. Ultimately, there came into being two schools of historical studies concerning arms: German-language, concentrating German and Austrian experts, chiefly in Berlin, Dresden, Munich and Vienna, and English-lan guage, i. e. British and American, especially in London and New York. Less significant centres are located in France (the Parisian Musde de l’Armde), Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain, and Central and Eastern Europe: Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Russia. Systematic research was initiated by work on “great inventories ” of preserved collections of arms from past epochs: antiquity, the Middle Ages and the modern era, shifting the term “old arms” in time. In the first place, the investigations dealt with typology and terminology, leading to the appearance of lexicons, a field in which pride of place went, once again, to the Germans and the English1. Bashford Dean, an outstanding American expert on arms, and a naturalist by training, was convinced that types of arms evolve, similarly to plants or animals, and could be arranged in genetical sequences; consequently, he constructed typological tables2.

PUSHING THE BOUNDS OF TYPOLOGY: JEWISH CARNALITY AND THE EUCHARIST IN JÖRG RATGEB’S HERRENBERG ALTARPIECE by GENEVIEVE D. MILLIKEN Under the Direction of John R. Decker, PhD ABSTRACT Jörg Ratgeb’s Herrenberg Altarpiece (1518-1519) depicts well-established examples of Christian iconography, but appears to reconfigure and intensify traditional subjects and subject matter through the inclusion of overt anti-Judaic references. In this paper, my focus is the strong anti-Judaic subject matter of the Herrenberg Altarpiece and the local context in which, and for which, it was created. The anti-Jewish representations are investigated by exploring Christian perceptions of biblical and contemporary Jews, identifying social tensions in Swabia that may have influenced how Jews were depicted, and recognizing the ways in which the trope of Jewish wantonness may have served a politico-religious agenda in the region.

Archilochus First Poet after Homer ARCILOCOU TA APOSPASMATA William Harris Prof. Emeritus Classics Middlebury College 1 Archilochus was known in ancient Greece, to everyone who knew anything about literature, as the first poet after Homer and Hesiod. To an educated Greek in the Fourth Century A.D. it would have seemed inexplicable to have to explain in a preface to the poems of Archilochus, who this famous poet was, when and where he lived and what kind of verse he wrote. Although no more precise about exact dates than we are, he would have placed Homer about four hundred years after the Trojan War, Hesiod somewhat later, and Archilochus in the time of Gyges, about or after 480 B.C., as we know from the Parian Marble. Archilochus' volumes were cur- rently available to him, and he would hardly have thought that this author and Hipponax and Sappho, let alone a hundred others, would have virtually disappeared in the next seven hundred years.

  • Fur Dress, Art, and Class Identity in Sixteenth- and Seventeenth-Century England and Holland by Elizabeth Mcfadden a Dissertatio
Fur Dress, Art, and Class Identity in Sixteenth- and Seventeenth-Century England and Holland By Elizabeth McFadden A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History of Art and the Designated Emphasis in Dutch Studies in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Elizabeth Honig, Chair Professor Todd Olson Professor Margaretta Lovell Professor Jeroen Dewulf Fall 2019 Abstract Fur Dress, Art, and Class Identity in Sixteenth- and Seventeenth-Century England and Holland by Elizabeth McFadden Doctor of Philosophy in History of Art Designated Emphasis in Dutch Studies University of California, Berkeley Professor Elizabeth Honig, Chair My dissertation examines painted representations of fur clothing in early modern England and the Netherlands. Looking at portraits of elites and urban professionals from 1509 to 1670, I argue that fur dress played a fundamentally important role in actively remaking the image of middle- class and noble subjects. While demonstrating that fur was important to establishing male authority in court culture, my project shows that, by the late sixteenth century, the iconographic status and fashionability of fur garments were changing, rendering furs less central to elite displays of magnificence and more apt to bourgeois demonstrations of virtue and gravitas. This project explores the changing meanings of fur dress as it moved over the bodies of different social groups, male and female, European and non-European. My project deploys methods from several disciplines to discuss how fur’s shifting status was related to emerging technologies in art and fashion, new concepts of luxury, and contemporary knowledge in medicine and health.
