Molecular simulations provide a ‘computational microscope’ which enables us to examine the physical nature of gating mechanisms at the level of the single channel molecule. Water enclosed within the confines of a nanoscale pore may exhibit unexpected behaviour. In particular, if the molecular surfaces lining the pore are hydrophobic this promotes de-wetting of the pore. De-wetting is observed as stochastic liquid–vapour transitions within a pore, and may lead to functional closure of a pore to the flow of ions and/or water. Such behaviour was first observed in simulations of simple model nanopores and referred to as ‘hydrophobic gating’. Simulations of both the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor and of TWIK-1 potassium channels (the latter alongside experimental studies) suggest hydrophobic gating may occur in some biological ion channels. Current studies are focused on designing hydrophobic gates into biomimetic nanopores.     A refuge for the persecuted, release for the fettered mind An organisation set up in 1933 to find work for refugee academics is still very much in business. Georgina Ferry reports. Seventy years ago, on 5 February 1939, the great and the good of Oxford poured into the Sheldonian to hear distinguished speakers address 'The Problem of the refugee Scholar'. The aim was to persuade the University and its colleges to open their hearts and their pockets to academics from countries where fascism had deprived them of their livelihood and of the opportunity to teach and research. On the platform was Lord Samuel, former Home Secretary and head of the Council for German Jewry, and Sir John Hope Simpson, the former Indian civil servant whose subsequent career as a colonial administrator had frequently focused on migration, forced and otherwise, in countries as diverse as Kenya and Palestine. Both were Balliol men. Distinguished Oxford figures including the Master of Balliol, A D Lindsay, the Provost of Oriel, Sir William David Ross, and the regius Professor of Medicine, Sir Edward Farquhar Buzzard - had worked indefatigably over the previous five years to create the conditions in which the University would be prepared to stage a high-profile event in such a cause. It all began in 1933, when Sir William Beveridge, then director of the London School of Economics (and subsequently Master of Univ), was on a study trip to Vienna. Reading in a newspaper that, since Adolf Hitler's recent rise to power, Jewish and other non-Nazi professors were losing their jobs in German universities, Beveridge returned to England and mobilised many of his influential friends to form the academic assistance Council (AAC).

Even in one-off cases, a procedure is followed; at its simplest, this includes the raising of a suggestion and the decision that a plaque is worthwhile (or not, as the case may be). In general, it is likely to involve a wider group of people than those directly responsible for plaque work; notably, one or more proposers (often members of the general public), and a group which is responsible for deciding which proposals are taken forward. The latter may take the form of a committee or advisory panel, and the consideration of plaque nominations may be just one of its functions.     IPSWICH’S BLUE PLAQUES The Ipswich Society JEAN INGELOW 1820 - 1897 2 Elm Street A distinguished Victorian author highly regarded by Tennyson and Ruskin, Jean Ingelow was one of the best-selling authors of poetry, children's stories and novels from 1850 until her death. However, her fame critically declined in the 20th century, though she is still celebrated in the USA. Born in Lincolnshire, Jean moved to Ipswich, aged fourteen, when her father became manager of a banking company. Living in Elm Street for ten years in the spacious first floor rooms over the bank she began her first experiments as a writer. After bank failure and the family’s departure, the arch was created and Arcade Street was built on the site of the Ingelow's garden. MARGARET TEMPEST 1892 - 1982 3 St Edmunds Road Margaret Tempest (Lady Mears) was born at 28 Fonnereau Rd Ipswich, later moving to 34 Park Rd. She attended Ipswich Art School and Westminster School of Art, graduating in 1914. She was a founder member of the Chelsea Illustrators - a society of twenty women illustrators, who successfully worked together between 1919 and 1939. Margaret is credited with the distinctive design of Alison Utley’s Little Grey Rabbit books, which she illustrated from 1929 into the 1960s. She illustrated her own books as well as those of a wide range of authors. From London, Margaret returned to Suffolk many weekends to pursue her passion of sailing. In 1939 Margaret moved permanently to the Ipswich area and married Sir Grimwood Mears. They moved to 3 St Edmunds Rd in January 1951, where Lady Mears continued living until her death.

Abstract The Bachelor thesis deals with history, structure and methods of preserving England's cultural heritage. It focuses on both theoretical aspects of historic preservation as well as the practical side. The significant part of the thesis occupies with English Heritage and its activities in this sector. The first section of the thesis occupies with the theory of cultural conservation. The second part presents the historical development of historical preservation in England containing a comparison with other parts of the United Kingdom. The third part shows English Heritage as one of the most influential organisations regarding English historical preservation with laying stress on its history, development, structure and procedures. The fourth part introduces actual sites under English Heritage protection and shows the theory of preservation in practice. The final part compares the forms and promotions of historical preservation in the United Kingdom and the Czech Republic with focus on heritage marketing.
