Dillon -iii- Abstract This thesis examines the lives of the convict workers who constituted the primary work force in the Campbell Town district in Van Diemen’s Land during the assignment period but focuses particularly on the 1830s. Over 1000 assigned men and women, ganged government convicts, convict police and ticket holders became the district’s unfree working class. Although studies have been completed on each of the groups separately, especially female convicts and ganged convicts, no holistic studies have investigated how convicts were integrated into a district as its multi-layered working class and the ways this affected their working and leisure lives and their interactions with their employers. Research has paid particular attention to the Lower Court records for 1835 to extract both quantitative data about the management of different groups of convicts, and also to provide more specific narratives about aspects of their work and leisure. -
Brisbane's Convict Stories
City’s harsh past revealed in Life in Irons: Brisbane’s Convict Stories Moreton Bay penal colony was established by the British Government to “… reinstate transportation as an object of real terror to all classes of society”. It succeeded. Museum of Brisbane’s upcoming exhibition, Life in Irons: Brisbane’s Convict Stories, 18 May – 28 October 2018, provides a vivid insight into daily existence in the settlement from 1824 – 1839 using original documents, new research and personal accounts brought to life with immersive technologies that literally gives a voice and face to the past. Chairman Sallyanne Atkinson AO said Museum of Brisbane is the city’s storyteller and revealing our convict history deepens understanding of our modern city. “From place names to a lingering sense of isolation, Brisbane’s convict history shapes our city’s contemporary culture,” Mrs Atkinson said. “Life in Irons is particularly exciting as, due to our partnership with Queensland State Archives, it features precious, rarely-seen, original documents from the settlement that are part of the UNESCO Australian Memory of the World Register.” Director Renai Grace said Life in Irons conveys the brutality and isolation of life for the 3,000 men and women imprisoned here from Moreton Bay’s founding in 1824 to the penal colony’s closure in 1839 by complementing the official documents and historical objects with artwork commissions and performance. “We have commissioned international sound artist, Brisbane-based Lawrence English, to create a new soundscape that will resonate throughout the exhibition space conjuring up the heat, isolation, danger and loneliness of the settlement,” Ms Grace said. -

198 French History and Civilization The Paradox of Penal Colonization: Debates on Convict Transportation at the International Prison Congresses 1872-1895 Briony Neilson France’s decision to introduce penal transportation at precisely the moment that Britain was winding it back is a striking and curious fact of history. While the Australian experiment was not considered a model for direct imitation, it did nonetheless provide a foundational reference point for France and indeed other European powers well after its demise, serving as a yardstick (whether positive or negative) for subsequent discussions about the utility of transportation as a method of controlling crime. The ultimate fate of the Australian experiment raised questions in later decades about the utility, sustainability and primary purpose of penal transportation. As this paper will examine, even if penologists saw penal transportation as serving some useful role in tackling crime, the experience of the British in Australia seemed to indicate the strictly limited practicability of the method in terms of controlling crime. Far from a self-sustaining system, penal colonization was premised on an inherent and insurmountable contradiction; namely, that the realization of the colonizing side of the project depended on the eradication of its penal aspect. As the Australian model demonstrated, it was a fundamental truth that the two sides of the system of penal colonization could not be maintained over the long term. The success of the one necessarily implied the withering away of the other. From the point of view of historical analysis, the legacy of the Australian model of penal transportation provides a useful hook for us to identify international ways of thinking Briony Neilson received a PhD in History from the University of Sydney in 2012 and is currently research officer (Monash University) and sessional tutor (University of Sydney). -

You may share this work for non- commercial purposes only, provided you give attribution to the copyright holder and the publisher, and provide a link to the Creative Commons licence. 7 Transportation from Britain and Ireland, 1615–1875 Hamish Maxwell-Stewart Despite recent research which has revealed the extent to which penal transportation was employed as a labour mobilization device across the Western empires, the British remain the colonial power most associated with the practice.1 The role that convict transportation played in the British colonization of Australia is particularly well known. It should come as little surprise that the UNESCO World Heritage listing of places associated with the history of penal transportation is entirely restricted to Australian sites.2 The manner in which convict labour was utilized in the development of English (later British) overseas colonial concerns for the 170 years that proceeded the departure of the First Fleet for New South Wales in 1787 is comparatively neglected. There have been even fewer attempts to explain the rise and fall of transportation as a British institution from the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries. In part this is because the literature on British systems of punishment is dominated by the history of prisons and penitentiaries.3 As Braithwaite put it, the rise of prison has been ‘read as the enduring central question’, sideling examination of alternative measures for dealing with offenders. -

28 July 2013 - Get to know some local Parramatta tree treasures this year! Centen ary Square: Norfolk Island Hibiscus (Lagunaria patersonia) Also known as white oak (on Norfolk Is.) and cow itch tree (in Qld.) In the foreground of St Johns Cathedral, the Norfolk Island hibiscus was named for Lt.Col.William Paterson, one-time superintendent of Norfolk Island, acting NSW Governor and amateur botanist. In summer these have pink or lavender hibiscus-like flowers and later very bristly seed pods, hence the 'itch' name. There’s another one on the south-east of Old Government House. Also in the square is a fine old 'English' (actually European) oak, surrounded by raised circular bed and studded with plaques to Councillors who presided over the Church Street pedestrian mall going in. Watch out for the jacarandas flowering south of the Cathedral and around Lennox Bridge in November! Parramatta Park: Cook's pine (Araucaria columnaris) Parramatta Park is full of great trees, both locally native (some 3-700 year old forest red gums and narrow-leaved ironbarks, some with Aboriginal carved trunks (for making coolibahs, shields etc) providing landscape framing and identity. A couple of introduced conifers worthy of a gaze are the Cook's pine that lines up directly with George Street and its Tudor Revival gate house, between that and Old Government House. Native to New Caledonia, this tree commemorates James Cook the navigator and always grows 'off straight' - spiralling one way in the southern hemisphere, the other in the north! You might recognise it in tourist posters for New Caledonia – it’s “Ile des Pins” is covered in these pencil-like trees. -

Some research suggestions on convicts and Irish immigrants June Tomlinson In May 2013 I attended the National Famine Commemorations in Kilrush, County Clare. One of the events I attended was the lecture and readings of Evelyn Conlon introducing, at that time, her forthcoming novel based on the lives of the Famine orphan girls who were shipped to Australia during the period 1848 to 1850, the girls were taken from Workhouses throughout all 32 counties in Ireland. http://www.irishfaminememorial.org/en/orphans/ Evelyn stated many times during the lecture/readings that she was not a family historian, but an author of novels based on elements of fact. The audience appeared to me to be thirsty for Australian information on Irish people leaving as convicts or those who immigrated, many did not know about the great indexing and books available on these subjects, at the time I thought I would write something about the conversations that evening in Kilrush. I typed so many pages and was nowhere near finished, it was starting to seem like a never ending story, so I put it aside because it needed serious editing. In August 2015 we will be travelling to the UK and of course Clare in Ireland and once again I was reminded about my unfinished story. I feel embarrassed; there was no reason why I should not have finished this. What I have written is only a snapshot of the type of information available, it is certainly not an exhaustive list, my hope is that it might give some researchers clues on where to go to find more information. -

A Colony of Convicts The following information has been taken from https://www.foundingdocs.gov.au/ Documenting a Democracy ‘Governor Phillip’s Instructions 25 April 1787’ The British explorer Captain James Cook landed in Australia in 1770 and claimed it as a British territory. Six years after James Cook landed at Botany Bay and gave the territory its English name of 'New South Wales', the American colonies declared their independence and war with Britain began. Access to America for the transportation of convicts ceased and overcrowding in British gaols soon raised official concerns. In 1779, Joseph Banks, the botanist who had travelled with Cook to New South Wales, suggested Australia as an alternative place for transportation. The advantages of trade with Asia and the Pacific were also raised, alongside the opportunity New South Wales offered as a new home for the American Loyalists who had supported Britain in the War of Independence. Eventually the Government settled on Botany Bay as the site for a colony. Secretary of State, Lord Sydney, chose Captain Arthur Phillip of the Royal Navy to lead the fleet and be the first governor. The process of colonisation began in 1788. A fleet of 11 ships, containing 736 convicts, some British troops and a governor set up the first colony of New South Wales in Sydney Cove. Prior to his departure for New South Wales, Phillip received his Instructions from King George III, with the advice of his ‘Privy Council'. The first Instructions included Phillip's Commission as Captain-General and Governor-in-Chief of New South Wales. -

Bond of Friendship Elizabeth Macginnis - London Elizabeth Macginnis Date of Trial: 15 January 1817 Where Tried: London Gaol Delivery Crime: Receiving stolen property Sentence: 14 years Est YOB: 1775 Stated Age on Arrival: 43 Native Place: Dublin Occupation: Housekeeper Alias/AKA: Elizabeth MacGinnis/Mcguiness/Eliza Maggannis Marital Status (UK): Married – Daniel Macginnis Children on Board: 2 children Surgeon’s Remarks: Rather insolent but a good mother, humane Assigned NSW or VDL NSW [While the bound indentures list Elizabeth with the surname ‘Macginnis’, other records refer to her by variants of that very ‘adaptable’ surname.] According to the Newgate prison records on 12 November 1816 Elizabeth Macginnis was committed for receiving stolen goods. Held on the same charge was Elizabeth’s husband, Daniel, while the person accused of the actual theft was young Louisa Ellen.1 The three were scheduled to appear at the Old Bailey on 10 December 1816 but only the trial of Louisa Ellen was heard on that day. She confessed to having stolen from her employer, adding that she had taken the stolen goods to Mrs. M’Ginnis who lived in Cloth-fair, and that Mrs. M’Ginnis had sold them for 2l 10s to a Jew, and had given Louisa the money. Anti-Emancipation in the South Alabama had the nation’s longest-running system of Convict Leasing, made legal from 1846 until 1928. In the decades before the Civil War, the state leased white prisoners to private individuals for profit to the state. Prior to Emancipation, Black men and women were not brought into a formal criminal justice system or prison system. They were either unjustly punished by enslavers or killed for alleged crimes by local mobs. The effects of state prison practices would rise and spread throughout the Southern Black community after Emancipation. Convict Leasing is one of the least understood and most dangerous systems of Black oppression in the post-Civil War South and was disguised and accepted as a perpetual and necessary source of revenue for local and state governments. In Alabama, profitability sent most forced-work prisoners underground to coal mines with a high chance they would not return alive. During many periods of this long-practiced horror, one in ten men did not survive forced prison work. Understanding this history makes us even more watchful of current prison policy and work practices in a state that incarcerates the third largest prison population in the U.S. with no sign of decrease. Loop Holes, Black Codes, and a New Imprisonment A broken, oppressive economic system created a broken civil war and backfired on the former Confederate South – industry and agriculture were in a post-Civil War shambles. -
