You'll wish your friends stories were this interestingBy RachelI received this book in the mail tonight and I'm easily already half way through it. This book reminds me of being at a campfire with your friends and listening to everyone's crazy stories...except the fact that these stories are at least 200% better. The concept is great and the drawings are awesome. My niece kept asking me what was so funny...apparently I was laughing out loud more than I realized. Many of the stories are funny, some are sad, others just reflective. Planning on buying another copy as a gift for my graphic novel loving friend as I think he would appreciate it on many levels. You won't regret the purchase. :)2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. This is amazing!By Rosalind D. BullardThis book is amazing! The stories and illustrations are so good. I gave it as a gift to my son, and he is really enjoying it. I highly recommend it. Personal stories from an all-star lineup-immortalized in beautiful, black Sharpie(r). When Arthur Jones cocreated a reading series centered around ubiquitous Post-Its(r), the series struck a chord. It grew in popularity and was ultimately featured on a This American Life live simulcast broadcast across the nation.Inspired by the series and spanning a wide and weird range of topics from an A-list roster of contributors, Post-It(r) Note Diaries captures everyday occurrences from a job interview gone hilariously awry and a nude run-in with a neighbor to hair-raising events like an overnight encounter at Nicholas Cage's house (it's not what you think!), and nearly drowning while trying to paddle across the East River in a homemade canoe. Post-It(r) Note Diaries is perfect for NPR addicts and fans of unique graphic favorites like Postsecret and Blankets.Diarists include: John Hodgman, David Rakoff, Hanna Tinti, Arthur Bradford, Chuck Klosterman, Andrew Solomon, Starlee Kine, Kristen Schaal, Mary Roach and Andrew Bird. ldquo;Read a story per day and savor it.rdquo;mdash;George Gene Gustines, New York TimesAbout the AuthorArthur Jones is an illustrator, designer, animator, writer, and graduate of the Rhode Island school of Design. He has been the recipient of a MacDowell Colony residency, and currently lives in Brooklyn. • Looking for a New Podcast to Try? 45 Great Picks from the TED Staff
Blog Insights From Our Office Looking for a new podcast to try? 45 great picks from the TED staff Posted by: TED Staff May 22, 2015 at 4:20 pm EDT There’s something so cool about finding a new podcast to love — each little download opens a door to new ideas, new jokes, new ways of seeing the world. Working at TED, as you might guess, many of us have strong opinions about this. Beyond the podcasts we all love: This American Life, Radiolab, The Moth, Serial, and of course our own TED Radio Hour — here’s our list of 45 you might not know you needed to listen to right this minute. For great storytelling Snap Judgment “It’s a 56minute whirlwind that always seems to go by too fast,” says Ellyn Guttman, of our TED Books team, about this hardtodescribe NPR podcast hosted by Glynn Washington. “It’s similar to This American Life but edgier,” adds Kim Nederveen Pieterse of our Partnerships workgroup. “It questions race, identity and ‘the system’ through personal storytelling and music.” Criminal This podcast bills itself as “stories of people who’ve done wrong, been wronged or gotten caught somewhere in the middle.” Photographer Ryan Lash says, “After binging on Serial for the third time, this show satisfies my cravings.” The Story Collider Science meets stories in this podcast from former TED staffer Ben Lillie. “Sometimes scientists share funny moments from their lab; other times they explain how they became fixated on niche topics. Sometimes it’s nonscientists telling sciencey stories,” says writer Kate Torgovnick May.

MADE IN NY PODCAST CERTIFICATE PROGRAM JANUARY-FEBRUARY • 2018 ABIGAIL BEREOLA I’m Abigail and I’m currently a freelance writer and Books Editor at The Rumpus with interests in writing, film, and audio. Previously I worked as a Publicity Assistant at Penguin Random House. I really love podcasts--these days, friends come to me for book recommendations and podcast recommendations. I’ve produced a podcast episode with The Heart and, lately, I’ve been trying to get my feet wet with tape syncs and transcription work. I’m also working on my own independent short-form podcast series which will hopefully consist of eight episodes. The first podcast episode that really showed me what the form can do was probably The Heart’s “Movies In Your Head” (back in 2014!). Lately though, I really love Rough Translation and their episode “American Surrogate” has stayed with me. ANNA PHELAN My name is Anna Phelan and I work at TED, launching and marketing our original podcasts, and providing editorial guidance on the TED Radio Hour, of which the actual production is done by NPR. I’m originally from Ireland, where my focus was on literature and publishing. I’m drawn to audio storytelling because of its more intimate, experiential nature. I’m excited to delve into the trenches with production which I’m still new to, and ultimately I’d like to work on bringing more literary fiction to the world of podcasting. I’m going to cheat here and say that my favourite podcast episode is the No series by The Heart, which is actually 4 episodes – and if I had to narrow, episode 3, Answers.

His photograph was a photograph of my face. His Twitter name was @jon_ronson. His most recent tweet, which appeared as I stared in surprise at his timeline, read: ‘Going home. Gotta get the recipe for a huge plate of guarana and mussel in a bap with mayonnaise :D #yummy.’ ‘Who are you?‘ I tweeted him. ‘Watching #Seinfeld. I would love a big plate of celeriac, grouper and sour cream kebab with lemongrass #foodie,’ he tweeted. I didn’t know what to do. The next morning I checked @jon_ronson’s timeline before I checked my own. In the night he had tweeted, ‘I’m dreaming something about #time and #cock.’ He had twenty followers. Some were people I knew from real life, who were probably wondering why I’d suddenly become so passionate about fusion cooking and candid about dreaming about cock. I did some digging.

Praise for Reality Radio: Telling True Stories in Sound “Somehow in this manic digital age, Reality Radio—a mere book! —is more relevant than ever. Form and function manifest, here is the story of contemporary documentary audio, thoughtfully composed and offered straight from its most respected producers. Reality Radio is required reading for anyone at the beginning of her audio career. Or in the middle. Or finishing up. And for all invested listeners. This is radio canon.” —Julie Shapiro, executive producer, Radiotopia from prx “The essays in this book were written by people thinking with their ears.” —rick Moody, author and audio maker “[Biewen] offers a lively history of creative documentary radio in his introduction to [twenty-five] passionate, instructive, and unex- pectedly moving essays by innovative audio journalists and artists who use sound to tell true stories artfully. Invaluable and many- faceted coverage of a thriving, populist, and mind- expanding art form.” —Booklist “What is striking about this collection is how clearly the reader can ‘hear’ the diverse voices and stories, despite the print medium. A wonderful and accessible read. Highly recommended.” —Choice “An incredibly important contribution to the field of public media, one that will invite introspection, spark creativity, and hopefully teach people that the first step in learning is listening.” —Public Radio Makers Quest 2.0 “The producers who wrote these essays prove that there’s nothing more moving than real, truthful radio. I read a lot of the book in bed and soon heard the voices whispering in my ear: ‘Get up. Go record something. Now.’ You will feel the same.” — NeeNah elliS, independent radio producer and author of If I Live to Be 100: Lessons from the Centenarians “In [these] highly autobiographical essays .

Vassar College Prison Theater: How Drama Programs in Correctional Facilities Challenge the Roots of the Prison Industrial Complex A Thesis submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Bachelor of Arts in Sociology by Fran Kuperberg Thesis Advisors: Professor Eileen Leonard Professor Bill Hoynes May 2018 Prison Theater Kuperberg Abstract This thesis explores the use of drama with incarcerated individuals. The prison industrial complex is a racist and classist system built on power and control and aimed at maintaining America’s current social hierarchy. Prisons claim to be rehabilitative, meaning that they are able to transform convicted offenders into civil members of society, but in actuality they are punitive and oppressive. The emergence of external programs entering prisons has provided new hope for the rehabilitative function of prisons, but I argue that drama programs are able to directly counteract oppressive structures and promote social change.
